From the NA/AUS/EU release dates, the PS1 was at roughly 50 million by the 3 year mark. The PS3 isn't even close to pacing the PS1.

What are you talking about? I agreed that PS3 is a failure compared to the PS2. It's also a failure compared to the lead in this gen. Xbox 360 is a failure to the lead in this gen as well. Yes - it's a success compared to the original Xbox, but no one cares about that because the Xbox 360 had low standards to overcome in the first place. It isn't like "Oh my god! Xbox 360 did better than Xbox!" more like "Awesome. It's better than the crap that came before". Because people expected the Xbox 360, at least reasonable people, to do better than the original Xbox. Microsoft learnt it's lesson. With that said. Both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are failures this gen. They can't beat Wii sales. I still think that the PS3 can catch up to the Xbox 360 total sales wise though. Depends on what Microsoft comes out with that will help them increase the gap. I'm betting the next big thing - Reach. That will help them. MAYBE Gears of War 3.
