@Consternated: Nintendo's all but locked up Monster Hunter as an exclusive at this point.

"bu bu but wait until it launches in Japan....game changer...*gulp*"
oh cows...so hopeful...so delusional, smh. the XB1 is still only released in 13 regions and is only a million or so behind the ps4. and the Japan launch seems to have fizzled too...yikes!!
besides japan i'm interested to see how the systems perform in China since they opened their borders to console gaming again. that could be the real game changer here for either system.
@tymeservesfate: They will all sell less than 450,000 there like they did before. With the only exception being the 2600, and then that's still maybe only around 500,00 when you exclude the clones.
Gameking sold like 1 millin systems across 4 different models across like nearly 10 years.
Sure game systems have more functions now, but they are still foriegn, and the average chinamen outside of hong kong probably won't think on wasting money.
Is there anything out now that would appeal to their tastes for games?
Maybe they're just waiting for that game that makes the purchase of the console worth it. So far they don't appear to have anything to help the console launch in Japan.
@getyeryayasout: They realized that Japan isn't the most important market, it's the western market that's the biggest and most vital.
As mentioned in this thread already, the Japanese market has changed and people prefer portable gaming more than stationary gaming -- it's why the 3DS & mobile gaming is doing well there.
Japanese gaming market is prettymuch dead.
No it's not, it's just changed and console manufacturer's haven't followed those trends this generation. It's going to be even more different a few years down the road and they'll all need to rethink their strategies.
They need to start working on more games. Yakuza and Final Fantasy XIV beta will only work go so far.
Sony probably should have convinced Sega to announce a PS4 port of Persona 5 and Namco-Bandai to announce a PS4 port of the new Tales of... title.
Good point. But Sony should convince Sega to work on another Shinobi game. (like the last two released on PS2) That would be so badass on PS4!!!
it's pretty funny and interesting how different regions of the world prefer their games. the US is console country, EU is more pc-centric and japan loves their handhelds.
Maybe the Japanese are upset that Sony launched in their own home country months after everywhere else, for no reason at all.
I'm sure it will be fine, just look at the PS3 start in JP. The only 2 consoles that come to mind that have flopped in JP are the xbox, and xbox 360, when sales figures get similar to those, then you should worry. Also Handhelds are a much bigger than consoles in JP.
It will outsell Wiiu and Xbone there so in the end SONY wins and thus SDC.
But there is a good chance it will fail to outsell the PS3 if it is not compelling enough for japanese gamers.
Japan represents what, 10m PS3 sales? Given the way the PS4 has sold so much better in the US it could make up those sales across the generation there pretty easily.
Anyway, not much of a surprise to me. One of the podcasts i listen to commented on how the lineup for Japan is pretty much just western ports bar like one title a few days back. At least here you can rely on the multiplats but in Japan there's pretty much no big games.
They're a more reliable region for picking up consoles for killer titles though so all it'll take is a game like MGS5, maybe with some exclusive DLC or a nice bundle and i think it'll rocket. They did announce the MGS inscribed console or something for Japan? That might help.
herehere
I think there is a time-zone difference in japan, probably still asleep.
Nice damage control you got there.
No in all honesty japanese don't want playstation anymore, they want to play with android phones.
Personally I'm not as dumb as the americans, i'll be waiting a week or so to play DS2 first.
You think americans are dumb because 10% of the people who brought consoles last year brought consoles up front? Judging from wii U sales and rumored PS4 sales, 10% of the japanese people who brought consoles last gen also brought consoles up front this one.
Seems you are insulting yourself here sir.
No, I was kidding.
If americans were dumb, xbone would be outselling PS4 right now.
It the japanese who are seem to be waiting for options...
The gained US sales will more than make up for any loss of market in Japan. Of course have no figures right now. I would be very surprised of PS4 didn't move at least 400K over the weekend for launch.
Stupid lems unaware that the Xbone has sold 0k in Japan.
Meanwhile their China hope appears to be more and more distant. http://www.techinasia.com/6-reasons-china-game-consoles-windfall-sony-microsoft/ @kuu2 will be very upset.
Poor lemmings. "Wait for it to be released in Guinea, Angola and Burma!!!!" Really?
People are getting excited over anecdotal evidence and a few pictures of anonymous stores which have playstations available. Many of these get offended when you bring up the wii u's actual sales.
Let's wait for those sales figures first.
@silversix_: Please stop claiming the PS4 the "Quad." That is beyond lame and you seem to be one of the few that are trying to push that nickname.

hahaha
Japanese gamers are not idiots and don't rush onto a platform full of nothing and play The Waiting Game. Western gamers tend to buy games for systems, but Japanese gamers buy systems for games. They'd gladly buy a system if a worthwhile game releases, even if it's last gen (i.e. Persona 4 for PS2 released after PS3 launch).
Not quite the case. PS3 didnt have any good games the first 2-3 years in the market unlike X360 though Japanese didnt even bother with X360 let alone PS3 surpassed X360 by far.
I wouldnt say games is all that matters for Japanese. Look Wii U for example. It doesnt do well even with major games like Mario.
The Japanese are smart enough to know that if they don't buy the system when there are no games than the devs will be forced to bring new games to the market. The bottom line is that PS4 has no games at the moment.

Well, hey, considering people pulled similar s*** with with the Wii U, maybe it's not too bad of an assumption.

The PS4 is not going to sell more than what was shipped there anyway. It could potentially sell less than the shipped amount. The PS4 will struggle to an extent like the WiiU until more interesting games release for the console in japan. These games will have to appeal to the japanese audience.
@nintendoboy16: The wii u is backed up by terrible sales figures! Not just anecdotal single evidence!
@nintendoboy16: The wii u is backed up by terrible sales figures! Not just anecdotal single evidence!
And yet, anecdotal evidence was where the Wii U's horrible sales started.
@nintendoboy16: The 150th excuse you have used as to why the wii u didn't sell. Congratulations on your milestone.

I meant it was where the figures were showing in general. For all we know, the numbers of Japanese PS4 units can go hand-in-hand with this anecdotal evidence, as it did with the Wii U.
@nintendoboy16: Are you seriously saying anecdotal evidence was backed up by poor sales with the wii u so it will be the same as with Playstation 4? That's the problem with anecdotal evidence: On it's own, like it is here, it means nothing.
It's a dying console market but I still expect PS4 to outsell every console released there this gen. They will have decent sales but not crazy like gens past. I guess it's the reason Sony launched there last. Having Japan is still an advantage though as last gen proved, they may not buy the most consoles but they'll still add significantly to worldwide numbers.
It will outsell Wiiu and Xbone there so in the end SONY wins and thus SDC.
Amen. As long as SDC is sustained that's all that matters.
Oooooopps.............
Looks like my 300k prediction will come true in the Land of the not so rising sun.
Sony Fan saying all of the wait till Japan, the PauperStation4 loosing steam and quickly in its home market.
so that will be 300K PS4 vs 3K TheBone?? mean while every where is pretty much 2:1 flavor PS4? hmm!
