Impressive numbers, I'm glad to see both consoles selling big especially during the holidays. Console gaming is far from dead and the PS4 and Xbox One is proving that.

The PS2 was selling in 22-24 million range a year in its third and fourth years. The PS4 is selling at a faster rate than the PS2 at the same point in time.

60 million PS4s by this time a year from now +- a million or two.

Its funny how alot of people at my job got or are getting PS4's and are all talking about PS4, when just a couple of years ago I was the only one with a PS3 and half of them didnt have a console or just had 360s.

Same thing in my college classes.

Thats cool and all but I really dont get it because Im not very impressed with the PS4 or the games available so far.

My Uni classmates are all PC and PS4 gamers, I've seen one Xbox owner and he is considering selling it just so he can game with us.

In fact in November after RoTR came out, they all slagged it off and said it's entirely pointless.

PS4 won this gen. Is over! Seriously, with the margin this big between PS4 and XB1, do we still need to report about NPD and such? Not like XB1 can ever catch up unless Sony suddenly decide to pull PS4 out of the market!

I dont think they'll pass 50 MILLION by the end of this year. They probably get close to 50 but not pass it.

Yeah we got Uncharted 4 comming and that will move like an extra 2-3 million console by itself, but what other big franchise name system seller does Sony have left? Nothing till maybe TLoU 2 comes along.

Sony have good games comming, but not notable system sellers mass attraction type.

Horizon: Zero Dawn has a chance to become big and GT: Sport will be huge in Europe. VR could also provide a boost like Kinect did to the 360. Don't underestimate the power of the PS4.

Really? You do realize that the PS4 overall has more games available than either the XB1, or Wii U right? Just because the 1st party output is weak doesn't = no games. Third party and indies count.

2016 will be the biggest year for the PS4 by far. 15 million will be a piece of cake.

I can see the PS4 at the 50-60 million range by the end of the year with the Xbox One above 30 million in the same time frame.

Either way, this could very well be the biggest generation of all time in terms of console sales.

The PS4 is already outpacing the PS2's sales numbers in a comparable time period and from all the signs from Microsoft, the Xbox One is outpacing the Xbox 360's sales and is now the fastest selling console in the Xbox family.

If this gen runs for the same time frame as the seventh generation, I could see the PS4 above 150 million(which is the total sales of the PS2) and the Xbox One likely finishing with around 90 million to 100 million units sold.

As I said in another thread, the only two platforms that are dead this generation is the Wii U and the Vita. The 3DS still shows signs of life, and the PS4 and Xbox One are both beating the sales rates of the most popular systems in their respective families.

The PS4 shows no signs of slowing down and despite the claims of some people, the Xbox One appears to be alive and carving its own place in the market.

How the hell can Nintendo compete this year when its obvious the PS4 will be in its prime? The PS4 is gonna stomp all over the NX's launch. Nintendo would be so dumb to release the NX this year. The PS4 is gonna be at 50 million by the end of 2016.

The Xbox One is far from dead and irrelevant. When Microsoft themselves gloats about how the Xbox One is outpacing comparable 360 sales in the same time period, is hyping the Xbox One as the best selling system in the Xbox family, and is calling this their best holiday ever, I don't think Microsoft is anywhere near finished.

The only reason why none of this is as impressive is because Sony is doing even better.

Sony said they sold around 4.2 million consoles in 2013, meaning in the 2 years since, they've sold a little less than 16 million a year on average. So they will be a tad over 50 million if they keep selling at a similar rate.

Though I would guess it would be a little more north of that as it looks like Sony may finally have worthwhile exclusives in 2016.

Yea it's complete suicide if NX launches this year, it will just be another WiiU part 2. I kinda feel bad for Nintnedo, they are in a tough spot. The WiiU is pretty much dead so it needs a replacement but on the other hand launching a successor when the PS4 and Xbone are in their prime is pretty suicidal.

I really want the NX to do well, but man if Nintendo releases it this year it will be DOA and I'm not kidding. There is zero chance they will have another Wii level gimmick to help sell the console, so how the hell can it combat PS4's market dominance?

The Xbox One is selling so badly Microsoft hasn't given even an end of year shipment to retailer number like they had in the past. The last actual numbers from Microsoft were their bizarre 'plan on shipping over the coming months' numbers from over a year ago.

The Xbox One was only at ~15 million at the start of December worldwide. Which is almost exactly the same sales rate as the first Xbox.

The Xbox One is selling about 4-5 million a year in the US and another million or two in the rest of the world. And that is already with multiple desperation price cuts and double bundling of games.

The first Xbox hit 24.5 million when Microsoft dumped the console at the 3.5 year mark. The only way the Xbox One gets past those numbers is if they don't dump the console early.

It sucks they went all in with the Wii U controller and it is so ingrained in the system. If they could only strip out the expensive controller and repackage the Wii U for 200 or even 150 dollars with just a single Wiimote it would fly off the shelves. And they would be in good shape to wait to launch when they want to.

There are huge numbers of people I know want to play the big Nintendo Wii U titles but don't want to pay 300 dollars for the 32gb bundle.

It will easily sell another 15 - 18 million units this year. So 50+ million total by the end of 2016.

When no one wants an Xbone, everyone gets the PS4. With delays and games coming to pc, even less people will bother with the Bone and go with the ps4 instead

I actually think 60 million by the end of the year is possible. The system should permanently hit $299 sometime this year and with exclusives like Uncharted 4, Street Fighter V, GT Sport, Horizon, TLG, Ratchet and Clank, Persona 5 among others sales should be higher than last year.

If they drop to $299.99 this year that would indeed be possible, but selling 50+ million units in three years is still really impressive.

I expected nothing less from the greatest console ever.
