Tell me the truth, how many of you PS3 guys actually buy a significant amount of blu-ray dvds. Hardly any. ****Why? Because they cost more than DVDs and don't provide enough of a difference to justify the increased costs. Which is the same reason that MS lost the HD-DVD market position, not solely because of the Blu-ray being included in the PS3, but because of that price/performance problem inherent in the hi-def DVD business.****

Microsoft is enjoying the advantage of getting to drop the production costs of having to support a HD-DVD manufacturing and marketing division. So, they are that much more profitable overall than Sony, in the short term and the long term.

One poster already said it best, but I will tweak it, Sony won the hi-definition DVD battle but lost the high definition DVD war. There are no spoils, just ongoing unrecoupable costs.

Funny, how ironic this is.

*****UPDATE: I think I have been proved wrong about this part of my OP. There is a justifiable difference between Blu-ray and DVDs. But there is a price problem still, in that although there is a definate difference, blu-ray is significantly better, people aren't convinced they should have to pay for it.

As for it being a pyhirric victory for Sony. I think this aspect of the post is valid and should be debated. Blu-ray did shoot up the cost of the PS3 and by winning the battle with MS over high definition Sony has to bear the cost of manufacturing such function. But MS was relieved of having to produce any more HD drives (external of course) so the MS bottom line has improved. Also calculate in the fact that although blu-ray is a growing format, it is not necessarily driving PS3 sales. Rather, stand alone Blu-ray players are growing in great numbers. This puts Sony in a negative position. They bear the cost of a blu-ray player but don't see a great benefit from it. Therefore, winning the battle with MS over high definition was a pyhirric victory.

That is debateable of course, and why I posted it in the first place. It is pretty cool that as of writing this there are 93 posts. Thanks for the information, I have learned a lot. Go ahead and insult and flame me, it's okay: this is the gamespot.com system wars thread, I mean: THIS IS SPARTA!!!!

I OFFICIALLY stopped buying DVD's in 2007, and if a movie isn't BLU, I wait for the Blu-Ray.

REMEMBER, Blu-Ray is only Two Years OLD...it wasn't going to crush anything overnight, nor did DVD. BLU-RAY SALES ARE GREAT!

Everyone I know that has a PS3 player, at least 20 of them have over 40 Blu-Ray's. I am approaching 100...I look for deals on replacing my DVD catalog.

If you come to a Game Forum or internet Forum, you will run into the Younger crowd, teens, etc., and those are comprised of mostly nonHD gamers that just want to play great games. So, while they may all laugh at Sony, and Blu-Ray, the actual movie companies are not, it's a growing market, and it's much appreciated.

I watch sports in HD, regular Television in HD, it was a shame I had to upscale DVD"s, since it lacked the same quality...no longer.

Blu is Awesome, and there's no going back. Upscaled DVD doesn't even hold a candle to Blu.

Check out www.Blu-Ray.com...that's a forum designed for Movie lovers.

I have over 90 Blu's, and although I don't need Blu for Drama's, for movies with action, and special effects, it's the only way to go.

Blu's Growth has beenphenomenal as well, and there is a Solution to utilizing our HDTV's!

There is A LARGE difference in quality, and I also have Blockbuster Onlne, so I get Blu's in the Mail.

DVD, Streaming, and DD are nice, but you suffer a noticable drop in quality...of course, there are even those that don't buy DVD's,they just burn them, and again, Forums like this have more of that element.

There are MILLIONS of Standalone Blu-Ray players sold, as well as 23+ Million PS3's sold, so it's just a growing market.

Also, I never pay more than $17-$22 for a Blu-Ray, at most, since they are always on sale at launch or later.

You clearly flunked out of your classics units. You have no idea who King Pyrrhus was. Or what a Pyrrhic victory is. It would be fine to disagree whether or not Sony has suffered a pyrrhic vicory, but saying it is a bad analogy because the war is over is really, really stupid.

Thanks, to everyone who posts about their view on blu-ray sales. I appreciate the information.

Looks like Blu ray is moving up at blockbuster, went from one wall section to two.

While DVD goes around the entire store.

Only blu-ray I have is the Dark Night, was a gift.

wrong. I have 5 bluray, 1 dvd. the reason I dont buy blurays is because I never bought dvds in the first place. Bluray dvds are the first type of movie collections I ever bought. I buy them of ebay new(most of the time) for cheaper than stores. I have my ps3 for games, so I have 16 games 5 blurays. I'm looking to increase my games collection Dont blame bluray failing on ps3 owners because thats mainly cost of standalone bluray players' problem. If the standalone were cheaper more poeple would buy blurays.

I have a little over 40 blu ray movies, nothing catalog stuff only recent releases, i figured since i have a ps3 might as well pay the extra 5-7 dollars over the collectors edition of a dvd for the better picture and audio. The audio i really cant tell the difference yet since i have only a 5.1 DD set up, but the picture i can definetly tell the difference, even with a dvd upconverted to 1080P not even close to blu ray.

On demand has been around for a while now and to be honest hasnt taken off like DVD has, not saying that its bad or anything, and for the most part not everyone is tech savy to use streaming, and for those people that doesnt know how, theres blu ray, these people have been used to dvd players for a while now and once consumers upgrade to HDTV cause of the broadcast switch, they'll notice the difference, and either A they can buy a nice upconverter or B get a blu ray player. not saying that blu ray is gonna take over DVD, but i wouldnt call it a failure either.

i'm just not a big videophile or movie collector, even movies are a chore generally and I only really like dark quirky movies, comedies and sometimes scifi/action

I was part of netflix but it became tedious after a while, now I'm on swap a dvd

my gf's dad bought a ps3 mainly for bluray but I swear he still doesn't own any, he does watch bootlegs on his ps3 though so try and figure that out.. even though his pc is hooked up to his big tv.. he watches them off the ps3.. they're also on his ipod.. so he's really into movies of any genre

I'm actually applying for this company and in this mission statement they're talking about supporting hd-dvd it seems kind of fishy

Don't worry about what he says, he's too got up in overated streaming and on demand, and hates the PS3.

I'm not, I just wanted to mention that Download services have been around for a while now and still hasnt taken over the physical format, CD, DVD's and what not, I'm not knocking DD, hell i have a netflix account and i stream movies through my 360 when i havent recieved a movie i'm waiting for and i'm bored. But i'm getting the best of both worlds using net flix for blu rays that i wouldnt normally buy. my point was not that many people know how to stream netflix and are still dependent on the physical format thats why i said i wouldnt call blu ray a failure either.

I buy plenty of Blu-Ray. Naturally I haven't bought one for awhile because of my PS3 being stolen, but once I replace it, I plan on buying more movies. I have 6 so far. I had 10 games.

My cousin is the same way, you guys don't impact the industry like the rest of us. There is always folks that rent and barely buy...for VHS, DVD, and Blu.

I own three Blu-Ray movies -- all movies bought for $9.99 on Black Friday. BR is just too ****ing damn expensive... thank God I have netflix. To be completely honest, Blu-Ray is nice... but no where near worth the money for Blu-Ray players and Blu-Ray disks.

Nah, I highly doubt blu ray will take over DVD if anything they will co exist side by side, you figure some people will not be willing to pay the extra 5-7 dollars for the better picture and audio, while movie buffs and audio and video philes will be all up in that.

If the difference isn't enough then why play games on an HDTV? Why not play all our games on standard def TV from now on? According to you it makes no different with movies, so why should it make it a difference for games? Film celluloid has over 4000 thousand technical pixels. More then then the eye can see. Blu-ray uses 1080 of those. More then enough to fill a theater sized screen and still have a crystal clear image. Remove you fanboy goggles, you sound pathetic. DVD sales has decreased 2% since last year. Blu-ray sales has increased 316% The formats here to stay. Just like DVD was clearly here to stay back in 1998 when it starting to get rolling. And don't worry about digital downloads, the Internet service providers are still atleast ten years away from cheaply giving everyone high speed Internet at an affordable price. Especially since only 75% of Americans have home Internet access, and certainly not all of them have high speed Internet or willing to pay for it. Thats not what studio wants when it hears about DD. Nor do they want to eliminate the option to double dip, which DD would obviously do.

I guess you haven't heard that highspeed internet providers are starting to charge by how much you download. Here in Austin TX where I live Roadrunner has just changed to this $30 for only 5 gigs of bandwidith per month. That won't even cover a SINGLE hi-def movie lol. It only covers about 6 standard movie downloads but nothing else. Basically MS bet on digital downloading and finding they, once again, bet on the wrong horse. Funny how that worked out isn't it.

One poster already said it best, but I will tweak it, Sony won the hi-definition DVD battle but lost the high definition DVD war. There are no spoils, just ongoing unrecoupable costs.

Funny, how ironic this is.

Your right about MS losing the HD DVD war by not including the player with the 360, but i dont think the price of the discs had anything to do with it, durign the whole HD DVD Blu Ray era generally the HD DVD prices were below blu ray prices but the public still chose blu ray, i dont know why but it just happened that way, even when HD DVD standalones were dropped to 99 dollars they were still a tough sell against 299+ blu ray player. You have to also remember that when DVD was first released DVD players and DVDs were the same price as Blu ray players and Blu rays now so who's to say that a few years maybe the prices on blu ray players and blu rays will reach the current price point of dvds and players now. Not saying that blu ray is gonna reach dvd numbers but its not out of the realm of posibility.

Tell me the truth, how many of you PS3 guys actually buy a significant amount of blu-ray dvds. Hardly any. Why? Because they cost more than DVDs and don't provide enough of a difference to justify the increased costs. Which is the same reason that MS lost the HD-DVD market position, not solely because of the Blu-ray being included in the PS3, but because of that price/performance problem inherent in the hi-def DVD business.

Funny how that worked out isn't it.

that's near where I live too but according to TW they've stopped with that plan

Including blu-ray pushed the PS3's price up and thus, caused Sony to lose every bit of market dominance they had in the console industry.

Personally, I only buy blu-rays now....and have since Feb07. I currently own over 20 BR movies. But I'm also an adult who owns a house and has a family.

News flash, when DVD's first came out there were $30 too. Best Buy always have sales on Blu-Ray's for around $17, the same price as a DVD. So how did Sony lose the battle.....where is HD DVD?

 Ownage approved. He tried to bash MS and, onceagain, failed miserably.

And to the fact that renting a movie digitally from your cable provider wouldn't go against your bandwidth cap anyways :)

I only buy Blu-Ray movies now. If you have a full 1080p TV then the jump from 480p to the full 1080p is fantastic. I watch DVDs now and complain at the quality.

Overall Blu-Ray's are coming down in price considerably. I can get them for the same price as a new DVD.

You're wrong. CDs weren't used for movies. And everyone immediately recognized DVD's improvement over VHS.

Blu-ray will be fine, but it won't match DVD's success. But it doesn't need to

I'm probably older than you.

And tell me when was the last time you bought a major movie release on VCD. Or heck, just tell me what store(s) rented VCDs.

I'll be waiting :)

Holy Mackerel.

I've been here for YEARS and seen so many arguements go in circles for a long time...BUT that's the first time I've ever heard that.

Thanks for not recycling an old argument. :)
