SONY: Worldwide PlayStation 3 sales reach 80 million

TOKYO, Nov. 6, 2013 — Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that cumulative sales of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) computer entertainment system has reached a milestone of 80 million units*1 worldwide as of November 2, 2013. Now in its seventh year, the PS3 system has demonstrated continued growth and momentum.

Too bad Microsoft already announced 80 million Xbox 360s as of last month.

Let's not forget the RROD rebuys, significantly lower price and even a year and a half advantage in Europe. There's no hope for the Bone next gen. Good because MS are a plague on gaming.

It just seems odd how Sony still couldn't catch up to the 360 after all these years. I don't think anyone expected this especially with Sony's lead. I know I didn't. Just goes to show you how much Sony eff'd up this past gen. 360 also had huge handicaps that pushed people away like cost of Xbox Live, RROD issue, and pretty much selling in only 2 of 3 major territories. MS done crushed Sony. Most definitely. lol

@jimmypsn: 80 millions units, and they somehow "eff'd up"? Those are good numbers. What goes up must come down, you can't expect Sony to continue selling units like the PS2. So I'd hardly call it an "eff'd up" generation from them. Also, MS hardly crushed Sony given that their sales are almost the same. But, you're right about MS, they did well considering their issues. But, everyone has their issues, and you don't get brownie points for it.

Microsoft announced the xbox sales 2 weeks ago, i doubt they shipped any more units then

Playstation has been around since 1995 and the PS2 was hugely popular so it's pretty amazing how far Sony has fallen. They also count PS2 sales with PS3 and the PS2 still sells well in developing countries.

If we're going to play that game, let's not forget the fact the PS3 ended up with a much smaller marketshare than the PS2, while 360 made Xbox into a strong and recognizable brand among gamers.

And let's see some actual numbers that show RRoD inflated the 360 numbers by a meaningful margin.

It's basically the equivalent of the Windows phone out selling the iPhone and Sony has to count PS2 sales to come close to the 360

The 360 launched a year later BUT PlayStation was already a well know and established brand and got beat by a newcomer. PS3>360 all day but I dont see why cows cant give credit where credit is due.

This talk about last gen is nonsense. Just because PS2 crushed Xbox it didn't meant that PS3 was guaranteed to beat 360. People will buy the better console and for many years that was the 360, it's only once they got arrogant and casual that PS3 became the better console and recent sales reflect that.

There's very few fanboys in real life, that's why PS4 is crushing the Bone in America despite the 360's success there.

Xboners are just using the success of the PS2 to downplay the significance of PS3 hitting 80 million which is a great achievement considering its launch state.

Nope. Sony disqualified themselves from sales numbers years ago by lumping together PS2 + PS3 sales in order to artificially inflate the figures.

Real numbers are probably closer to 40 million :(

Yep, the PS3 never, ever took the lead and the gen is over with. Cows swore Sony won, but they didn't. PS3 officially lost current gen. If it pulls ahead in the month to come, good for them. But the gen is over 11/15/2013.

Confirmation from Sony. It just reached 80 million. MS did so over a month ago. So lets kill all that BS that in sales PS3 ever eclipsed the Xbox 360. It didn't.

You have preached on and on about the PS3 being ahead when its common knowledge they were combining sales. You said lemmings were crazy when we said if Sony had ever, even once officially pulled ahead we would have seen a Sony press release. But the truth is here and its a small thing really. If you enjoyed PS3 more good for you.

But the PS3 finished in last place. Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. As for sales in next gen, we;ll see :)

Who gives a shit about sales? Do we play sales? Is there some sort of reward for us? What makes a console better than the other is EXCLUSIVES. And does anybody legit feel that the 360 has better exclusives than the ps3? Or even the Wii? Of course not. So why on earth do sales matter to US?

Idgaf that sony/ms/nintendo are in third/second/first place. As long as they do well enough to continue in the video game industry it really doesn't matter to US gamers.
