maybe now nintendo can make a shooter thats not catered to babies who don't play real shooters.
I feel sorry for you. Maybe one day you'll grow out of this mind set.

On this whole "It only did well because WiiU owners are starving" thing, for the sake of comparison, what's the PS4's attach rate? My Google-fu's failing me at the moment.
It doesn't matter if there were 100 million PlayStation 4's and Xbox One's, this isn't spin, this is just straight up logic and mathematics. With considerably smaller library viability the sales for the games which are viable are going to be astronomically inflated, not because they're something that is off the charts special, but rather because people have little else to spend their money on.
If you've got one viable game and a million people, a million people are going to buy that one game, if you've got ten viable games and ten million people, the sales are going to be dispersed over those ten games thus dropping the amount of units sold per game greatly.
This isn't hard to figure out, Splatoon's sales and all of the other first party titles that are successful are a product of the Wii U's limited library and lack of viability as anything but a first party machine.
The same math also dictates that a limited install base like the Wii U's will throttle the potential sales for any game on it. That's a basic level of math and logic that you are ignoring- 100% of people in an audience of 10 million is still smaller than 20% of the people in an audience of 100 million.
Also, you are ignoring that the Wii U still has a whole lot of viable games- as a matter of fact, it still has more must play games than either of the other two consoles.
Sorry, but this argument simply does not apply.
The Wii U does have a decent amount of viable games and more first party/exclusives, but once third party comes into the equation for the twins, your logic goes out the window. There's a larger install base for both of those consoles, but there's also a dramatically larger number of viable games to choose from with third party factored in. They have a larger install base, but the amount of viable games they have to choose from greatly outweighs that install base increase. I know Splatoon is the bee's knee's to you, but you have to look at this rationally, it's a successful game, but its success is mostly attributed to the state of the console itself and what is available.
If the Wii U had available to it what the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 do, Splatoon's numbers would likely be less than half of what they are if not more.
Third party games are overrated trash. The best thing that ever happened to the Wii U was lack of third party support. Look at the PS4. They can barely muster the energy to make an exclusive. They fall back on third party trash to fill up their library.
Splatoon is a damn good game so this is great news. I'm planning to play it a whole lot more than I have so far. I just hope this informs Nintendo to continue taking risks on new IP as long as they give it the attention and focus of any of their franchise-staples.
PS4 has an attach rate of 3.4, Wii U of 6.87.
So you're telling me that the few 'starving' WiiU owners bought more games -- mind you, Nintendo games which are always sold at Nintendo prices -- than PS4 owners? That a very significant number of 'non-starving' PS4 owners didn't buy Bloodborne not because they were distracted by a bazillion other games, but because it just didn't appeal to them? That the average PS4 owner consumed one-half the games the average WiiU owner has?
Huh. I almost feel bad for buying a WiiU for Splatoon instead of a PS4 now. Almost.
(From Software has my money for Dark Souls 3 on PC anyways...)

You know, I kinda agree. People can talk down the Wii U library all they want, but almost my entire library is jam packed full of quality games that I can't get enough of. I got as many quality games from Wii U as I ever got from the twins.

Rare is the third party game not rushed to store shelves. They arrive in broken states. Torn into pieces and sold separately. They're created by committee. They lack heart and soul. They're driven by monetary concerns. Third party games are homogenized to be played by everyone but they please no one. Exclusives can take their time. Exclusives take advantage of the hardware. They seek to create unique experiences that stand out from the crowd. The Wii U is one of the finest home consoles I've ever owned.
I still haven't bought this game myself, happy to see it doing well though. I'm still not entirely sure if I would like it or not, maybe if it comes out on the NX and people I know buy one. Right now my problem is I only personally know a couple people that have a Wii U and only one of them plays Splatoon(or did, not sure if still does).
What new multiplat IPs have beaten it? Destiny obviously but is there anything else? (I'm thinking maybe Watch Dogs and Titanfall but not certain as I don't remember the figures)

Look at my avatar. Do I look like someone who jokes around?
NeoGaf is fighting for Bloodborne the way I thought Cows would here. They are getting owned of course but it's pretty funny. Cows must be trying to hunt down some resolution analysis articles or something. They love to talk about the Wii U being dead but their exclusives are getting outsold by Wii U exclusives. There are like 6 times more PS4's out there than Wii U's. WTF..........
Looking at the list of PS4 games must be enough for Cows. Maybe we can share play sometime so you guys can actually try some out.
Great numbers for Nintento and it's a game with new ideas, too bad the game isn't exactly my cup of tea so I'm one of those 2/3 wii u owners that don't have it
I'm glad something relatively unique is selling well even though I don't consider it to be particularly fun.
Good that Splatoon is doing well and all...
but this title technically belongs to Nintendoland. It's also outsold by Tomodachi Life if you want to include the 3DS. >.>
While true, I did not count Nintendo Land because most of its sales are from bundles, and I generally did not count any handheld IPs at all for the purposes of this discussion (Tamodachi is also not a new IP, since it was on the DS after all, albeit unlocalized).

Even if allowed, they're still Nintendo IPs. So it still wouldn't sway anything.
While there is proof of how much splatoon has sold, there is zero proof of how much other exclusives on other platforms have sold, you say it sold double of bloodborne but where the official numbers at? getting it from VGcharts isnt allowed.
anyways! nice numbers, finally Nintendo fans buy something that dosent have mario in it

You dont need to know anyone, you just hop online and play. Game is amazing offline and online. Its also a game you can pick up and put down. You can wait for NX, but i wouldnt, Splatoon is on fire right now. No matter what time you play, that game is poppin. I recommend trying the demo out and getting use to it. Might take awhile at first, but youll be painting like a pro in no time.

Oh, you mean like The Legend of Zelda? Or Pikmin? Or Kid Icarus? Or Pokemon? Or Xenoblade? Or Fire Emblem? Or Metroid Prime? Or Donkey Kong? Or Kirby?
Or do you mean the countless third party franchises like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Tales, SoulCalibur, Monster Hunter, Professor Layton, Bravely Default, Shin Megami Tensei, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Street Fighter?
Don't talk about things you don't know much about, it's not a good look on you.

If you think about gens as a timespan, The Last of Us would also qualify -- 7m after one year on PS3.
Buuuuut let's let the WiiU win already, eh? :p Game managed to just -sell- on a system no one wants to buy.

Thats not how things work though, you are comparing lifetime sales of splatoon to a month of two from release of every game with a link you posted above, whats the lifetime sales of bloodborne at this moment? whats the lifetime sales of killzone at this moment? take that and equal the number of months of how long splatoon has been in the market till this announcement from nintendo came out and you'll surely notice its not the best selling exclusive of this gen
heck even the infamous link thats literally few weeks from release! is the 4 million of splatoon few weeks from release? no
@finalstar2007: So Sony are free to provide more updates on those sales numbers. Generally, companies, including Nintendo, stop providing sales number updates on games once they stop selling- for example, Nintendo provided no update for Smash 4 this year, because it presumably did not continue selling enough copies. On the other hand, games that continued to sell, like Mario Kart and Splatoon, got sales updates. On the Sony front, we have seen Sony do the same (the last Bloodborne update was in December, when the Old Hunters expansion came out) with games that continue to sell, and not bother with ones that stop selling.
Since there have not been any updates for those games since those initial releases, the simple implication is they have not garnered any significant sales since to have any updated sales numbers be made available.
Spin it all you want, though, the tears make me happy :-)

@charizard1605: You don't actually believe Halo sold only 1 million copies do you?
No, I'm sure it's sold more. But until I have some actual hard numbers to go by, I will go with the last announced concrete numbers, or the closest thing I have to it.
It shouldn't be much of an issue, Xbox fans like NyaDC and StormyJoe have told me that one should always go by concrete numbers, not estimates by other parties. Microsoft's last given numbers peg it at a million, so a million it is.

Get me better numbers, then. That is actually exactly how things work, btw- if you have an update to numbers to announce, you announce it. If you don't, you don't, and the last standing numbers are considered official. Simple rules of the business and financial world.

Admittedly I was trolling in my last response to you (at least near the end).
But no, like I said, I do not believe Halo 5 has sold just a million- therefore the best I can do is use the last known numbers. You will note I don't use Halo as a point of comparison too often in the OP (I generally use Bloodborne, which is the closest analog, and for which we got an update in numbers in December), and generally only use Halo to provide a larger context.

Except he didn't. Really, only a complete ignorance of business and finances would make you think otherwise.
@Slashkice: Did you like Splatoon? :p
I haven't played it a lot, mainly 'cuz I haven't played video games in general a lot lately. But I liked what I played, which is just a bit of multiplayer. It didn't strike me as something I'd heavily invest time into like I have with TLOU, but it's different enough that I'd want to pop it out for some play every now and then. Not a fan of the map rotation. I also would have preferred if all the equipment was more vanilla without separate stats and shit, but that's more of a personal quip.

now do you really believe that splatoon is the best selling exclusive this gen? just because a forum poster says so dosent make it so just sayin
wishful thinking is wishful thinking :P
Nobody said it's the best selling exclusive this gen. I said it's the best selling new exclusive IP this gen. And it is just that- unless you can bring me numbers that say otherwise.
The bestselling exclusive of this gen is Mario Kart 8, which has sold 7.4 million copies, I believe.
Splatoon's been a monstrous success for Nintendo- the game has now sold 4.02 million copies worldwide, making it the most successful new first party IP, as well as the most successful new exclusive IP, of this generation.
So yeah, guys. Splatoon is one of the biggest success stories of this generation, and also one of the most important Nintendo games of the last decade. Hopefully, Nintendo takes the hint, and continues making more new IPs, giving them the kind of push, support, and marketing that they made Splatoon.
Well you forget 3 vital things :
1) You forgot to mention that this generation has more than 3 years left
2) Splatoon is a title for everyone and its based also on Shooter genre which is way more appealing for masses than an Action Horror RPG ( bloodborne )
3) You also didnt mention that since Wii Us library for 2015 is very limited, missing all those great games weve seen in 2014 PLUS missing all those AAA caliber 3rd parties ... The options a Wii U gamer had were very limited therefore Splatoon was an easy choice for everyone , therefore the great sales.
So , great for Splatoon because Nintendo really needs those NEW IPs , specially with NX to get peoples attention but again i cant bypass some facts like :
1) Didnt save Wii U means Splatoon wasnt a system seller when Bloodborne it was big time for example
2) Splatoon wasnt an AAA caliber IP like Bloodborne was which Nintendo should really focus on to get huge momentum and attention over competition. As for specifically Bloodborne it wins in every area than sales alone as of it being an AAA rather than AA and being a system seller as well let alone won way more GOTY all over the places.
