As of 11/15/10, SC2 has been pirated over 2.3 million times. In comparison, it has only sold a little over 4 million copies. http://www.1up.com/news/pirated-version-starcraft-million It's sad to see that the actual PC fans are what's causing the PC's collapse.BodyElite
The article is wrong.
It uses the verb "to pirate" instead of "to download through torrent". Blizzard uses a torrent client to distribute its own games digitally.
For that very reason, your own post FAILS atomically.
Is'nt it more like most torrented game?
Besides, 4.5 mill sold on PC > 8 mill sold on consoles as far as profits go.
There is no way of knowing how many times it has been "downloaded." And I'm pretty sure Black Ops was "downloaded" more.
Also... its not like the game didn't sell 4.5 million units, or that people could play online without a legitimate account. So I don't see the problem here.
Why would people pirate this game? I bought this game for the multiplayer. THe campaign was cool, but once it's over, it's boring.
On a side note, explain this math. Granted, you have to pay console licensing fees, but that's usually flat so the more sales you make the less per unit you pay. OTOH, PC games generally have to sell for less in order to get sales traction. Look at all the Steam games that don't really fly until they're on major markdowns. Is'nt it more like most torrented game?

Blizzard said that's false, they use torrents to distribute their games/patches. SAGE_OF_FIRE/Thread

The game sold twice as much as it was pirated. Do you even realize how enorumous success that is? Shows how much pc fans support Blizzard.

I suppose that was borderline trolling... What I meant was that, you can't compare the downloads since Blizzard use torrents themselves and you can't compare sales either because a PC game is very different from a console game in terms of expense/profit.
Considering PC games are considered succeses with 100k sold which would be a disaster on any console... Well, I'll just shut it because as I meantioned 4-5 > 8 is borderline trolling.
Downloads of torrent files is a very crude intsrument, it may be useful as a measurement of relative popularity, but that's not very accurate either as the availability will not be the same for all torrents on all sites.
Furthermore, torrents aren't the only way to download.
Anyhow, this isn't piracy, it's non-profit sharing.
read the comments form these torrents
half the people dont even know what a "crack" is
torrents are not a good way to show piracy

Umm..console licensing fees aren't flat. They're same for each unit sold. The more games you sell the more you have to pay to MS, Sony and Nintendo.

Getting success on 100,000 units sold generally comes from shoestring budgets. Console games can be made on shoestring budgets, too (especially downloadables); it's just the environment is not as encouraging on consoles. StarCraft 2, OTOH, is a big-budget title, and needs good sales results (in the order of a few million) to turn a profit.Blizzard uses it's own Bittorrent client to download, you guessed it, torrents of SCII. Is there any differentiation between what is a legitimate torrent download and what is not?

You pay lke $7 per copy on console to the first party. SC2 has not been discounted much at all, so a $60 PC title selling 4.5 million copies is going to make a lot more than a similar console title. A big reason being a large percentage of those 4.5 million were most likely sold through Battle.net which is more profitable than selling a boxed copy through retail. Is'nt it more like most torrented game?

Well the game costs 60 bucks, has been split into 3 seperate games, and has no LAN. What do you expect?

[QUOTE="broken_bass_bin"]Sorry, I read it here: http://www.ripten.com/2010/08/09/starcraft-2-the-most-pirated-game-of-2010-so-far-sam-n/Where in that article does it say that it's the most pirated game of 2010? Did I miss something?
BodyElite
That article was written in August last year, and is headlined 'Most Pirated Game Of 2010 So Far'.
As others have pointed out, Black Ops was pirated more, and is supposedly the most pirated game of 2010.
Funny because I remembered downloading a lot of Blizzard's games and patches via the torrents Blizzard supplies its buyers.

I think Blizzard actually released some digital numbers early on but I dont really remember what they were. Im sure a large % of its sales were still digital, but probably not as much as the usual PC game since its only sold digitally through Blizzard.

Meanwhile Blizzard is busy being the most successful 3rd party game developer in the world.

Isn't that EA?Erm, am I wrong or... The OP is correct. Unless of course you can download it via sites other than Blizzard's torrent system, which I doubt.Ravensmashpeople download the files for blizzard games off of pirate sites all the time because they are sometimes faster than blizzard's torrent/download service, and then just register the files legitimately. I did this when i played WoW because downloading the immense file that is WoW is much faster at 1.5mb/s on a pirate site's torrent compared to blizzard's 100kb/s. You aren't pirating the game or doing anything illegal that way, just downloading the files, which are free from blizzard anyways and then registering them.
