Steam has officially launched for the Mac- and with 64 games, to boot! Not all of Valve's library is available yet, but it's coming soon. And here I was, thinking all that would be available was Portal and Torchlight.

w00t!

What say you, SW? Are Macs back on the radar? I mean... Valve believes Apple's computers are worthy of being a Tier 1 platform. You don't doubt Valve, do you?!?

Edit: Welcome to the open beta, Mac users. Hopefully Valve irons out the issues soon. :(

Edit 2: I included a link a few pages down, with performance tips. For all intents and purposes, Mac vs PC performance should be on par. This is a step in the right direction, and updates from Valve should handle the rest. If you get a chance to try this, post your results, as I will mine.

Edit 3: Portal and Civ4 have both been patched. Performance in Portal has greatly improved. V-sync and Color correction no longer cause your game to grind to a halt. Valve got out their bug squashing shoes for Civ4. First you couldn't download it, then you couldn't play it because it wouldn't launch! Now- you can do BOTH. Awesome updates. Looking forward to more!

Steam, letting you get great, low price games on your highly overpriced Apple computer! :D Sorry, couldn't resist that. But it is certainly a nice start for mac owners.

Well...still..good news, even if it was to be expected. If Valve is willing to support one petite platform (Mac) they might just as well support the other one (linux).

Quiting Druken Gamer vid...the best thing about Mac gaming is that you always know which games are good because you've already played them on PC years ago ;)

Lets hope there's some good sales on in the near future, because Mac owners won't have much money left for full price games after having re-mortgaged their house to afford their shiny new MAC. :)

These replies would seem a lot more clever if they were true. If Valve believes Apple's computers are worth supporting, people (read: gamers) should know things have changed.

they also seem to think Linux is worth supporting too, wouldn't the same logic with "things have changed" work here too?

Really..let's be honest...how did things change? Biggest pc games usuallytraditionaly used toMac versions sooner or later

Well, first of all- this thread isn't about Steam on Linux. That's pretty clear by this thread title, "Steam for Mac - LIVE!"

Macs always got Blizzard games at the same time PC users did. Sure there were (and still are) games that Macs get later than PC users, but that's diminished greatly since Apple made the Intel switch.

And ultimately, this isn't my opinion- it's Valve's. They're the ones who see Macs as being important.

True, however you try to pass it as some sort of game changer and unfortunately you lack basis for that claim

It is. Along with the rest of the Source engine games, and all of Valve's future products. Pretty swanky for Mac users. Honestly, it's not the fact that Valve is releasing their games on OSX that's important- it's that Steam now exists on the Mac. That makes it a lot easier for other developers to deliver their games simultaneously and easily to both major platforms.

the Mac platform has a lot of ground to make up for since the first time they showed off Halo:P

CE did make it to Mac, for some strange reason, but they lost Bungie.

only took 10 years to get Valve on board.

you wrote Valve's choice shows how things have changed. I've read that as you claiming that suddenly a lot has changed in terms of support for Macs as game platforms. If that wasn't your intention then I'm sorry I misinterpreted your post

well they've always had support from some of the big publishers like Blizzard and some other titles (COD2 is on the mac)

but there wasn't any centralized gaming for the platform, you basically just played blizzard games and that was it, so this is a pretty big deal for the mac

that said you probably won't start seeing games like the witcher, stalker, crysis, etc. on the mac version of steam, at least not anytime soon, but the other games like Civ 5 might end up on the mac now

This is and isn't true. The list of available Mac games surprises a lot of people. It wasn't just Blizzard, it was Epic and a few others. I do expect to see more Mac releases now that Steam is officially supported.

well to be fair, when it comes to the vast majority of people using computers, stereotypes tend to actually stick pretty well:

if somebody is using a mac, it's most likely a laptop, in their living room, staring at facebook all day

if somebody is using a PC, it's most likely a desktop, at work, playing solitaire all day

Valve hasn't officially released it for the Mac yet. It's on the way soon. Maybe by the end of today, certainly by next Wednesday.

has valve officially released counter-strike: source? because it says it hasn't been released yet, but it's still on my list of windows games. what i mean is that it's not even on my list of windows games, either.
