i really don't like steam that much. yes it has some good sales . but when it comes to features its really not that great .

Yup, party talk, clans, Store, its own private forums, game slocked to profile (and your allowed to make back ups when ever you want), weekend sales (like MW1 being 50% off 3 weekends ago) great indie games. And you can play this song if you convert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiXaT_1I-vw&playnext_from=TL&videos=SO5oxGM8pls :P ALL FREE! (minus games in store, with exceptions like portal)

Overpriced underperforming hardware.........Macs are still a joke unless you use them for specific tasks such as video editing.

im pretty disappointed with portals performance... I dont understand on this same computer when I used crossover games it ran alot better at even higher settings... If I leave the v-sync on it chugs all the time regardless if I turn everything else to lowest... but if I turn it off i get the worst screen tearing ever wtttfff

Lets hope there's some good sales on in the near future, because Mac owners won't have much money left for full price games after having re-mortgaged their house to afford their shiny new MAC. :)

attention gamespotters. Don't be tricked! Just one thing doesn't make a mac good. Free portal deal is good for those about to download. It's a simple game and doesn't have depth to it. It is like playing a flash game in 3d, but it's worth a play.

The games aren't running as well. I just finished Portal on my Macbook Pro and I could only get it to run decently on the lowest settings. However, through Bootcamp I can run both TF2 and Portal at max settings without any lag. Weird huh?

Check this out. Portal is free right now since they did the Steam update, and it runs on both mac and PC.

http://store.steampowered.com/freeportal/

DragonfireXZ95

yeah, I'm downloading it now as we speak.

I like the nice big red button to download it. Very encouraging, very free.

see how it plays.

Steam on Mac is so cool.

I truly am a gamer now, with no hindrance when I am a store on online wishing I had the right machine to do the job or have more choice in what games I want to play on what machine.

If I want to play Halo Reach on my Xbox360.

If I want to play GT5 on my PS3

If I want to play SMG2 on my Wii

If I want to play Starcraft 2 either my PC or Mac.

This is the way games should be distributed.

LOL@ people taking this thread so personally.

Maybe some of the valve games are running slower because they are running through openGL vs DirectX although i really don't know, probably not.

Also they could feel heavier due to mouse sensitivity, when i use a mac it feels as if its lower sensitivity or maybe their mice are lower resolution.

I was pretty excited by this, but having browsed the store i gotta say it's slim pickins' to say the least. Other than Portal and Civ 4, all of the games on offer are currently the equivalent of xbox live arcade games. Maybe once they get a decent number of proper, big-budget games available it can take off, but right now there's just not enough there.

I am not sure that things changed that much. From my perspective Valve is trying to be the be all end all mainstray of gaming services, so I think it is great ^^

I really do hope Valve suceeds in becomming such a mainstray, altho from my perspective I think this benefits Mac users more then it benefits Valve in general (not that it does not benefit Valve, since Macs are fairly common in some social circles).

Atleast now mac and PC users can settle the age old score, by having 2 huge CSS teams battle it out :P

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if performance for Nvidia + ATI's OGL drivers has fallen behind their DX drivers. GL has tremendously tropped in popularity among big-budget games. Plus the Mac drivers are usually quite a bit behind the Windows drivers.

However if the games simply "feel" slower, then it's probably a latency issue. I don't know too much about OSX's display driver infrastructure but it's possible it takes longer for frames to get up on the screen. They could also be using triple buffering, which increases lag as well.

Ehh it makes sense. It's wayyy easier for Valve to transition to Mac than it is to go to consoles. The hardware is pretty much the same, they don't have to deal with platform owners (well Apple is a lot more hands-on than MS is with their OS, but it's still an open development environment), and they can keep using Steam.

Glad to have it. Plus receiving Portal for free is a great way to get a start with the service. May pick up Torchlight sometime before the 24th since its half-off, then I'll just wait to see what else is offered. If only I had more space on my macbook pro... :P

After spending some time with the Mac version of Steam and Portal, all I can say is welcome to the open beta, Mac users. I'm a little disappointed.

The Steam client is crashy and buggy, and Portal chugs in a big way. I'm pretty confident I know why the other Valve titles aren't yet available...

Hopefully when they are available, we'll see reasonable frames per second. If not, I guess I'll just have to continue using Steam in Windows for the most part... What a shame. :(

(But I haven't given up hope yet! You can do it, Valve!)

Looks like Mac users get to suffer through the same issues. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have Steam. I just wished it worked better. I've played plenty of games on my Windows partition and on my OSX partition, and saw no discernible difference in performance (that's what the cool kids did when Apple released boot camp :P ). It's surprising to me to see the difference here, this far along in the development of OSX. Confusing. :?

It's full of personality, and no doubt it's unique. I wouldn't put it up with the best I've played recently, but that's just my opinion. By the time I met the boss, I was ready to be done playing it. Then I heard it was coming to the Mac, so I felt like playing it again natively. But then I got a chance to try it out- and it's bad. Really chugs in OSX right now. :(

There was a lot of problems with Steam at the start. Give Valve a little time and I am sure they will fix the issues.
