It'll be as big a success as steambox lmao. This is what they came up with to compete with psnow? They should name their next product SteamingPile.

well i've been planning on building a steambox for a while now.

it's good that i'll be able to play my windows games on it, should i choose to stream them. i doubt i will.

still though, a worthwhile feature on the PC platform.

Well the good thing about this is, that when you both have them in the same house, you'll have enough with one powerful rig.

The other PC, let's call it the streambox, doesn't have to be very powerful because your main PC is doing all the calculations :)

mm, yes i was thinking about that too, that's right, and quite advantageous.

yeah to begin with the linux box will probably be quite modest, but I'm thinking I would like it to be pretty kick ass, because quite a few demanding games like star citizen, the witcher 3 etc are coming to steam os.

plus i'll use the computer for more than just gaming, but for utilitarian things too, so it's good to have plenty of grunt available.

It's insane really. We've been seeing more and more support for Linux the past years, especially indie games. I think that's because they require less power and are therefor easier to port.

But with the announcement of SteamOS a lot of games have been announcing their support for it. Valve is really moving in on Microsofts territory. And ms responds and will respond by... doing nothing.

Totally understandable mate ;) But let's say your streambox ever fails to run the newest games at highest settings than you'll always have the option to stream from your main PC.

I currently have no use for it. As my PC is close to the TV I have my consoles at and where I occasionally play a PC game, connected via HDMI. But if I ever move my PC or TV it's great to have the option now to stream. Really like the advancements in streaming games that have been made the past years.

mmm. yes you're right the simpler a game is in terms of its codebase, the 'easier' it will be to get it on linux. i watched a presentation from the steam dev days where a guy talked about how to initially code your games for windows, such that it would make linux porting much easier. also, what's quite good is if you code the game for 'linux on steam', then you know the computer running it will have certain packages/dependancies available because steam requires them on linux.

but we're also seeing bigger engines like UE4, and Cryengine 3 support linux. yeah man things are looking pretty good. i'd be interested to see what electronics arts would do. i'd imagine they'd like all their origin games on mac, then maybe linux.

and yeah i know what you mean man. its good that the os is freely available for download. when i do want to use it, i don't have to jump through any hoops with licensing, or part with any money. having the option available is great.

Good point about EA. I wonder what they'll do. They can't ignore steams popularity but things went a bit sour between them and Valve. I.e. no more new EA games on steam because of the percentage that is being made from DLC. Money, that's where it comes down too.

So I wonder if they'll support steam OS... Will every game sale on steam os go via steam or will steam allow third party stores on it ?

@R4gn4r0k: ah yes i completely forgot about that aspect of things.

well, i guess they could use a linux version of the origin client, compatible with SteamOS, and Ubuntu. it would give EA financial control, as well as control over how the games were deployed, patched etc. its my understanding Valve is OK with this sort of thing, after all it is a linux kernel OS.

i am confident that one can run more software on steam os than just steam and the software valve allow you to run. i saw a guide on running libre office on steamos.

but yeah you're right. it comes down to finances, and EA might be happy with the way things are going.

I just thought about this: Steam OS is also a response to Win 8 and how Valve said that it's too closed and they didn't want everything to go through the Windows Store.

So yeah, they would be ok with an origin client, and a uplay client on their SteamOS. They wouldn't close it down, because they like the open nature of PC.

EA can be really weird. At times they love PC and they announces exclusives like TOR, Simcity and C&C: Generals 2. And then they go: "**** PC, let's put AO DRM on Simcity, cancel C&C and give them a last gen Fifa"

Really weird.

@R4gn4r0k: yeah i've fallen out of favour with ea for a while. i remember when BF2142 had in-game advertisements, one of the first to do it. I love simcity, but I didn't even bother with that last one. Simcity2000 was always my favourite.

actually i just found a story stating DICE will port FrostByte 3 to Linux. in fact, they want to create a 'halo' for linux. sounds very EA. so there we go!

if Linux got all those Origin games, that would be really good, especially the good mix of franchises.

Played a lot of Simcities, but 3000 was probably my favourite :P

I played the Simcity beta, and really liked it, but it didn't take long before servers got overloaded. I could already see it happening, and yes, the launch turned out a disaster. DRM screwing the paying customer again. Sigh.

Ah yes, they made plenty of COD-like games so it's only normal they'll also go after Halo's success XD

Anyway, EA still makes a lot of good games, a lot of games gamers will want to play. So Valve should get them on board for sure.

Except for Fifa World, that game was just bad. I know it's in BETA but it's just missing so many features that regular fifas have. Fifa 14 looks way better, the controls are way better, you can customize a match, you can play locally, you can play online without massive lag... Yeah, even for a free (to play) game it was awful.

How is this streaming stuff a good thing when most modern tvs/monitors already have enough lag?

well good, bad, you know - that's subjective. but i think i see what you're getting at...

short story - it's going to depend on the game. even rendering locally, 120 fps display is advantageous for a twitch shooter (like quake 3) over a 60 fps display. whereas for a game like civilization 5, you could have a ton of latency and it will be OK.

i'm just having a look here, and it seems the encoding of a frame takes about 12.2±2.9 ms. however that dude might have been on a gigabit ethernet with short cables and very powerful computers - i don't know.

so just spitballing here, it would seem that there'll be about one additional frame of lag. one may seem like a small number, but quite honestly in some games I couldn't tolerate that.

Gave it a try tonight with few games and it works like a charm, barely noticed any serious lag. Supersampling at 1440p, played in 1080p on my TV.

All I need now is a wireless keyboard\mouse and I'll be happy to play from my couch on my 60"

Will you be streaming Destiny, MGSV, GOW4(both of them), Uncharted 4, Halo 5, Project Beasts, FFXV, KH3, mario Kart, Zelda, Gran Turismo, etc? No, well GTFO...

As long as top notch console exclusives exist they will have strong presence in the market. PC would nothing but indie games, MMOs, RTts and Diablo if consoles weren't driving the market. And multiplats sell a ton more a console. Watch badly the Xbox One and PS4 versions of The Witcher 3 outsell the PC version.

Got it working. It's pretty decent, but performance is hardly good. Can't say however I ran it in ideal conditions. My modem is freaking ancient and the router is only slightly better.

The only thing that can kill consoles is Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo themselves... Nintendo is already hard at work on killing their respective console side of business by consistently ignoring the market, their fan base, and re-releasing rehash, after rehash, after rehash; Microsoft seemed pretty hell bent on killing the Xbox brand this gen with all their DRM bullshit; and Sony can't seem to stay financially stable...

Steam bringing down consoles is a pipe-dream...

Yeah, because games that aren't GOTY are obviously shit. So according to your logic PS3 has only 3 exclusives that aren't shit.

And you accuse PC gamers of grouping together consoles, yet you gladly follow it. Idiot.

It'll have little impact on platform wars, but I want to try it out with my HTPC in the near future. Could be pretty handy.

It's a welcomed feature that has it's usefulness. But it's not going to "kill" consoles anytime soon (or ever). As long as there are worthwhile exclusives being made for consoles (that consumers actually purchase), then they aren't necessarily going anywhere. But, on the flip-side of things. I wonder how far Sony is trying to go with PsNow. I remember hearing them wanting to make Playstation games available everywhere (tablets, TV, phones, etc.). Seems like they have a strong focus on streaming for the future as well. Time will tell.

Personally, I'm not interested in streaming games yet. Haven't been sold on "Non-Realtime" gaming. Possibly due to my previous experience with it on my Vita & my PS4. Haven't figured out the problem yet on my end, or if there even is one.

LOL you must be new to gamespot...the rating system changed and gta's a console game lower standards in the rating system.

I like how he says how games used to ship with mod tools and u had free levels and now games ship incomplete and u gotta pay for maps should of been included in the game.

gta sucks big ole floppy donkey sacks anyone knows that the gameplay was always garbage and will always be garbage along with unimaginitive level design.
