Blu-ray is not need o'rly ??

Midway Games has partnered with the Weinstein Co. and Genius Products to create the first video game/movie hybrid Blu-ray Disc.

When the game publisher ships the limited edition John Woo's Stranglehold Collector's Edition for PlayStation 3 in the summer, gamers who buy the $70 disc will get a full game as well as a high-definition version of director John Woo's Hard Boiled. That title had not previously been released on Blu-ray.

Woo decided to take the interactive route with Stranglehold, a sequel to Hard Boiled, with Chow Yun-Fat reprising his role as Inspector Tequila. The game offers an original plot that takes place 10 years after the events in the movie.

Although Stranglehold -- developed by Midway Games' Chicago Studio in conjunction with Woo's Tiger Hill Entertainment -- also will ship for Xbox 360, Microsoft's next-generation console still uses DVD-9 and does not have the capacity to hold both a full game and a movie.

"Putting a movie on a Blu-ray Disc certainly adds value to the game," IDC video game analyst Billy Pidgeon said. "These discs have a lot of storage capacity, and this gives Midway a chance to fill that space and offers consumers a value with two different entertainment mediums on a single disc."

With Woo's support, the director created the game's story, directed the motion-capture action and oversaw the game's development; Midway approached the film's rights-holders with the dual-format idea.

Weinstein and Genius were eager to take the film and deliver it to a new audience on a new format. As a result, gamers who haven't seen the original film -- which also is being released July 24 on DVD in a 15th anniversary two-disc edition via their Dragon Dynasty DVD label -- will be able to see the movie and then control the protagonist in a new interactive adventure.

Midway is still working out details on what types of extras the movie will have, but it is likely that two languages will be offered at the very least.

"The exclusive collector's edition of Stranglehold demonstrates the power of PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc and the total entertainment experience that can only be found on PlayStation 3," said Riley Russell, senior vp Third Party Relations and general counsel at Sony Computer Entertainment America. "The 50GB capacity of Blu-ray Disc allows PS3 content publishers to do things simply not possible on our competitor's 9GB DVD-based systems. Thanks to the advanced technology found in PS3, developers like Midway can truly realize their visions, bringing consumers even closer to the game."

I will get the blu-ray version of this game no doubt instead of the 360 version.

Please discuss.

I've said this for months and months now. Blu Ray is needed to make a game with Chow-Yun-Fat in it.

Hey you can laugh but it's a great feature you can't get anywhere else in hi-def for only $10 extra. If you have a ps3 why would you not want this version and if you have a 360 well sorry you can always watch it at your mates yard.

While its not necessary, I think it's pretty cool that they included it.

My only beef would be that if you didn't want the movie, you have no option. You MUST pay the higher price.

hmmmm, the disc isnt affecting the game in any way, and the film could be put on a dvd and included so its no biggy. I guess the H3 legendary edition could be put on 1 disc instead of 3 or 4 or whatever it is but it still isnt really affecting the game.

Maybe one day in the future Blu-ray will make a real difference to games, but putting a film on the disc as well to justify it, or promote Mr woo and advertise if you ask me, isnt making any difference to the gaming industry yet.

This is something I think sony will do with alot of the games based on movies and wow, what better package to have all on one disk. Just another way of using bluray to its advantage over the competition. Also the game looks awesome, seen some of the walk through footage from sony's gamer day, the game looks awesome. :)

Not necessarily. This is true ONLY for the Collector's Edition. If you don't want the movie dont get the CE, buy the regular edition.

No, not really.  There's a couple of other reasons blu-ray WILL be needed but we've all already gone over those.  This movie feature is a good one.  Why wouldn;t you want to see the movie your game is based on?

Thats great, but too bad the quality will not be as good as the bluray version and besides it would be awesome bringing some friends over and showing off the game and then be like, hey u wanna watch the movie? Its on the same disk, and just watch them say damn, that is tight. Only people that dont own a ps3 would say it is a crappy idea. I guarantee if this was able to be done on dvd9's alot of lemmings would make a big deal about it. Im not saying it is the best way to go but it definately would benefit off the movie studio's and the game developers. Just imagine if they start doing this with like a big budget movie like lets say Harry Potter, Spiderman 3, Pirates of The Carribean, this could be in favor of both the devs creating the game and the movie. Thats why I think it is a big deal.

It's all about quality or I would still be watching bootleg vcr tapes for $1. I remember when laser disc came out and my uncle showed me quality matters. Now after spending over 5 thousand pounds on my home theater why would I stick that rubbish in it.

Sounds good. What use is it to games though other than allowing it to be uncompressed? Right now I don't think Blu-Ray has much effect on gaming. However I do like the idea of having a game and movie on one disk. Now to just wait for a movie/game combo I actually want.

You would not say that if you has seen casino royal on dvd then watched it on blu-ray. If you have a sdtv then buy the 360 version.

These two are talking right out of there "you know what."  Anyone who syas there's no difference in blu-ray when compared to DVD is both blind and without a HDTV.  Likewise for anyone who thinks compression is no big deal.

How does one person's opinion on this game and movie prove or disprove whether blu-ray is needed?  All you've proven is that you aren;t buying the game.  So what?

BTW, I think its funny that no one is even talking about whther blu-ray will survive.  Just about when blu-ray will be needed.  It was a slightly different story a few months back.

Funny cuz I actually have....It looks better but not like vhs to dvd better more likeur 1990's tv to sdtv better...not much of a difference ...and yes I am gettin the 360 verison( for cheaper reasons...)I'm not saying it not a bad deal ( though again...on ebay) but it's not such a big deal like u put it....If they add 3 or 4 more levels and mutiplayer I would agree wit you...but a movie...that only difference from the dvd copy from the corner store is it looks prettier, i'll fell like a copout...I mean come on collector's edition have commentary and making of and trailers and stuff...all this has is a movie......

Yea the haters are starting to see the blu light I guess, clearly blu-ray has it's advantages. I personally think this is great and anybody that's a fan of Chow yun-fat or/and John woo the blu-ray version is a must have.

U make it sound like it's like the difference between vhs and dvd...well its not. Try putting a movie on hdtv on dvd format and bluray and tell if it's as huge as u make it sound.

Brooklyn has a point, Ive spent around the same amount on my home theater setup and I wont touch copies that are rubbish, and I starve for all the HD fottage I can get. It is a cool feture.

Digital distribution is a catch phrase or a dream. I don't know about you but I like having physical media that I can store in case my copy gets lost/damaged or I want to sell my old games. Plus the bandwidth needed is not practical as not everybody is online.

$10 for the movie ? I was hoping for a free movie.

BrooklynBomber

espically when its a movie where u can get it for less than 10 on ebay

It's all about quality or I would still be watching bootleg vcr tapes for $1. I remember when laser disc came out and my uncle showed me quality matters. Now after spending over 5 thousand pounds on my home theater why would I stick that rubbish in it.

your sig...  who are the two cowards?

Sounds good. What use is it to games though other than allowing it to be uncompressed? Right now I don't think Blu-Ray has much effect on gaming. However I do like the idea of having a game and movie on one disk. Now to just wait for a movie/game combo I actually want.t2wave

These two are talking right out of there "you know what." Anyone who syas there's no difference in blu-ray when compared to DVD is both blind and without a HDTV. Likewise for anyone who thinks compression is no big deal.

DENIAL.

U make it sound like it's like the difference between vhs and dvd...well its not. Try putting a movie on hdtv on dvd format and bluray and tell if it's as huge as u make it sound.

I do it every week.  no its not VHS to DVD, but it is a noticable difference.  its whether or not you can live with that difference.  I cannot.  I have switched online rentals a few times until I got to netflix, only because they carried more blu-ray than anyone else.  If I have a movie on DVD I'm not as excited.  if I have a "O.K." movie coming but its on blu-ray, i am excited.  No, its not VHS to DVD.  But it is SDTV to HDTV.  And to many across the world that difference makes all the difference.

so in other to make blu-ray needed for games,we have to add a full movie.okwiistation360

The game is on Xbox 360 as well so it had to be able to fit on a DVD without the movie. Thanks to Blu-Ray though, it means that PS3 may well be getting superior multiplatform games in the future, as is the case here.

After I watched the World cup,F1 championship, Cricket, boxing, in HD I will never go back to sdtv. I watched upconverted dvd's for years and blu-ray's sound is clearly superior and the picture is clearly better. My dad has the 1st shilling he ever earned and even he ponyed up for a hdtv after sleeping at my yard during the world cup.

hrmmm, all I read is BR was needed to put the game and a movie on one disk.  There was really nothing about X360 version of the game being inferior, at least I didn't think I read that.  Seems to me they are just trying to possibly push out the movie with a game.......honestly I would jsut care about the game.

Where can you get a 1080p movie for only $10 cmon that's a steal, you could find $10 in your couch.

i hope it's actually looks like 1080p. I know that most Hong Kong movies back then used really cheap film that wouldn't do justice an hdtv.

People dont want to spend big money on a mass storage device, and can you imagine the sucky restrictions on that kind of software, no lending it to your mates and no selling it on when you dont want it any more and player compatability issues coming out of our ears. Digital Distribution is bad for consumers and just another way for big companies to control us and try and tie us down to their individual products, no thanks.

I know what you mean, but the problem is, we're looking at the current way things are being done...  There are definantly ways for it to work out and not be bad at all for consumers...  DRM is a curse for both consumers and the companies.  (Geez, I really wish the OSS community had more say in things...)

Mainly, what really needs to be done is to get rid of the people running the companies who know nothing about technology at all...  They're run by old guys who probably wish we were still in the 60's...  Problem is, the people running the world now are ignorant about the current state of technology and whatnot...  Hillary Clinton?  Jack Thompson?  They choose to be ignorant about today's culture.  We need Mike Gravel...

There are ways for these things to work out well...  Heck, Steam got part of it down...  You buy a game, and if your computer dies, or whatever, you can go and redownload the game as long as you know what your steam account information is...  Granted, Steam has a crapload of issues in its current implementation, but at least it's a step in the right direction...

Basically it can be done...  Just like it's possible to make a good Sonic game...  It won't happen unless we change leaders...

I won't go into why we need Internet 2...

I have both a 360 and PS3, and this game, let alone the movie, do not interest me. This basically proves the point that BD is not NEEDED for gaming.

It makes all the difference to me, HD video looks so much better, and its not just the resolution, its the deeper colours and better sound that comes with it. Like I have already said before, ive spent £5000 on my setup and with this stiff, you really can feel the difference, especially when you go back to SD video after watching something in HD, SD looks horrible and blurry.

Hey you can laugh but it's a great feature you can't get anywhere else in hi-def for only $10 extra. If you have a ps3 why would you not want this version and if you have a 360 well sorry you can always watch it at your mates yard.

i just wanna said you have an awesome sig. those guys got pwned
