Story
There is a Tanooki-tailed tree outside of Princess Peach's Castle, with Tanooki leaves on its branches that all of the Mushroom Kingdom is familar with, but one night, a huge storm blows all of the Tanooki leaves off. The next morning, Princess Peach goes outside to see if the tree is okay, but during her inspection, Bowser once again kidnaps her.
Later on, Mario and three Toads (Red, Yellow, and Blue) go looking for the Princess. Eventually, they discover that she is missing and the Tanooki leaves are gone too. Yellow Toad notices a hovering letter near the tree, which the group of four go to. Mario grabs and opens it, and a picture of Bowser holding Princess Peach with Tanooki leaves flying in the background pops out. The message shocks the three Toads and Mario, and immediately, Mario and the three Toads run to save Princess Peach.

Quotes
It has been 15 years since Mario 64 was first released. Yet increasingly Miyamoto is more interested in reclaiming a 2D Mario era. In a recent discussion with company president Satoru Iwata, Miyamoto noted that old 2D Mario games didn't seem to confuse players. Goals and gameplay were more simple. The objectives - mostly squashing enemies and reaching a flag - were clearer. In a way, moving Mario into 3D created so much freedom that many didn't know what to do. Along this line of thinking, Miyamoto claims Super Mario 3D Land is a "3D Mario that plays like a 2D Mario game." ~ IGN TGS interview
The game's designers intend for players to reach the final (?) World 8 easily, with the difficulty rising dramatically after that point. Various levels also have secrets and shortcuts that require much more advanced skill to find. The game won't be as easy as previous 2D Mario games, however. ~IGN TGS interview
Miyamoto addressed the need for playing the game in 3D. He noted that generally Nintendo is not designing games to require the effect, yet there are some areas in 3D Land that definitely benefit from its use. In fact, some areas deliberately try to trick the player with the 3D effect. ~IGN TGS interview
"The bits of the game that take advantage of 3D depth are a lot of fun, inspiring you to hunt around for all of the hidden stuff. There's a wealth of helper functionality for beginners, and there's also a lot of cute little touches to the game that will bring up twinges of nostalgia. The 3D space of this game is really well thought-out, allowing you to enjoy the 3D-based tricks while still feeling like a 2D Mario. It may just be Mario, but then, nothing is like Mario. The mix of discovery and surprise here is what you come to expect from the series." ~ Famitsu Review

Orchestral Music and Tanooki Statue?
From 3DSTribe
A strong saxophone parps out the tune itself, and it's all the better for it – the previous MIDI saxophone just can't compete. While we never had any hints as to whether the game would feature an orchestrated score, like with previous Ninty showings the music is usually created in MIDI first (see the original Super Mario Galaxy 2 trailer from E3 2010) before being run through an orchestra. Could it be the Super Mario Galaxy Orchestra again?
James B. has this to say about the new music: "Listen carefully to the Saxophone, there's a nuance to the performance that MIDI can't achieve. Some notes are slured, others stopped with the tongue for stacatto. The MIDI is just a flat straight melody in comparison, every note is its own individual note rather than a true part of a flowing musical narrative."

Nintendo Power Leak
It seems that some info from next mouth's Nintendo Powerhas been leaked. This includes their impression of World 1, some of world 2 and one stage of world 3. Beware as this may include spoilers for the stages. Sorry about the lack of bullets, Glitchspot hates me.
Nintendo Power demo started at World 1-2, the underground stage.
Depth of the 3DS screen helped to bypass goombas and pits.
"3D adds so much, would never consider playing without it."
Use fire flower on torches to unlock secretes in this case coins, Zelda anyone?
Ends with a flagpole, gives a 1-Up if you land on the top.
World 1-3 is a mountains stage.
Level is set so Mario runs towards the horizon (into the screen).
"It is impressive to stand from the starting point and see the whole stage."
Use of telescope to survey the stage as well as finding toads that are hidden.
When Toad is found, will drop a Star Coin for you to pick up.
Every stage will have 3 Star Coins that you can find.
Ladybug creatures appear in world 1-3, jumping on all of them in succession gives a 1-UP.
Jumping into floating purple block contained a bonus room of coins.
Rail system, you move it by standing on the front or back of the platform, it carries you over giant chasm.
Ground pounding a wooden trunk released a Super Leaf.
Tanooki Mario can no longer turn into a statue nor can you fly, but you can flutter jump (think Yoshi).
Can attack with your tail when crouch. "looks likes Mario is breakdancing".
Note/Jump blocks return, used to snag a Star Coin.
A larger Note Block that sends the player to a newer version of coin heaven.
A star Coin is found here as well as the way down to another set of rails, rails lead to flagpole.
World 1-4 is made up of almost entirely of rails with no ground below you.
This is the first 3D Mario game where you have to hold a button to run, says that's a good thing for stages like this.
Checkpoint flag in the middle of every stage, here it was on a small cliff.
Piranha Plants spit fire at you when on the rails.
After a few deaths, a ? block with an item will appear over the checkpoint flag.
Stage comes to an end after a "roller coaster" like drop to the flag.
The next stage is a Bowser stage.
New enemies are in this stage, they are blue dragons that sneeze fire (most likely the Eerie like enemy)
They used the backward summersault move to get on top of a thowmp to get a star coin.
A stopwatch item was up here, they are found in all levels, said that they needed the bonus time.
Hammer bros return, can be taken out with one hit of the tanooki tail.
Bowser was around the corner. He was shooting fire balls at you as you ran towards (into the screen) him.
Once you get to bowser, he jumps to another bridge further back. You now must run to the left to avoid his fire balls.
After a U-turn, you are now on the same bridge as bowser.
Like SMB, you must make it to the end of the bridge to drop bowser into the lava.
They noticed that Bowser had a tanooki tail, when he fell into the lava he transformed into a tanooki goomba, and of course a toad is at the end and says that your princess is in another castle.
World 2-1 is a pink castle stage.
They used a telescope to spot a toad with a propeller block.
Tanooki goombas are in this stage; give you a Super Leaf when stomped on.
A pipe leads to a bonus room, where perspective matters. Have to change camera angle or use 3D effect to tell where blocks are.
To use the propeller block you leap then hit the jump button again. Need it to get to the top of the flagpole.
Wolrd 2-2 is underground; this stage is so dark that only a bit of light around Mario is showed.
Stage is filled with toxic ooze and the player must use a fold out path way to cross it.
World 3 has an airship level.
You must dodge spikey pistons, Bomb-bomb, and cannons.
Doughnut lifts are in this stage.
Boom Boom is at the end of this stage. You must jump on his head after he gets dizzy from spinning.
Triple Jump is gone.
Returning Featurs
Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Star, and Super Leaf power ups.
The Propeller Block from NSMB Wii.
Star Coins from NSMB DS/Wii, will be used to unlock more levels.
Roulette Blocks from NSMB DS/Wii.
The ! Switch from Super Mario World.
Flagpoles return from SMB 1,2 and NSMB Wii.
Checkpoint Flags, Adds 100seconds to timer.
Warp Pipes.
P-Switches, they are flatter now.
Clocks from SMG2, adds time to the timer.
Cannons from SM64.
Red Rings and Red coins from NSMB DS/Wii.
P-Wing Blocks, similar to Super Guide Blocks from NSMB Wii.
Worlds And Levels
World 1
World 1 of Super Mario 3D Land is a grassland area that features tall mushroom hills and flowers. As this is the start of Mario's adventure, the levels of World 1 are rather basic.
World 1-1: A grassland level with many colored blocks. This level introduces Cheep-Cheeps, Goombas and the new Tanooki Goombas
World 1-2: An underground area, which features a Super Mario Bros. World 1-2 Warp Zone-like area. The stage's music is the Super Mario Galaxy remix of the Super Mario Bros. underground theme.
World 1-3: A Mountain stage where Mario jumps down a cliff, that contains a place similar to a Coin Heaven.
World 1-4: An area where Mario rides a platform down rails.
World 1-Castle: A lava area with firebars and small dragons where Bowser is fought.
World 2
World 2-1: A plain with many stones and grass. This level features a new overworld theme also heard in the trailer for the game and has similarities with the Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros overworld themes.
World 2-3: Giant 8-bit platforms, representing Mario and a Super Mushroom from Super Mario Bros., much like Toy Time Galaxy and Mario Squared Galaxy. The last part of the stage is designed after a Super Mario Bros. ground stage.
World 2-Airship: A level with many airships. At the end, Boom Boom is battled. The stage's music is the Super Mario Galaxy remix of the Super Mario Bros. 3 airship theme, and the Boom Boom battle music is Peewee Piranha's theme from Super Mario Galaxy 2.
World 3
World 3-2: A water stage with Bloopers and Cheep-Cheeps.
World 3-3: An area with many Donut Lifts. The backgroud walls are made of yarn.
World 3-5: An area made of cookies with Para-Biddybuds.
World 4
World 4-1: A forest area with many large trees and a giant tree trunk with the same aforementioned ladybugs.
World 5
World 5-2: A dungeon-like level with Spinies that is played from an overhead view, as a homage for the 25th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda.
World 6
World 6-1: A tropical island area with palm trees and large waterfalls.
World 6-3: A haunted house stage with blue Timers and a Big Boo.
Unconfirmed Worlds
An airship level with Bob-ombs and Spike Pillars.
A sky level with rotating blocks and a white floating wall.
A place with many platforms and blocks. Elevators, blue blocks with white arrows on them, and Donut Lifts appear here.
A ghostly stage with a giant piano.
A underwater hole with purple eels.
A dark area with metal gears and Bob-ombs.
A snowy area with tightropes and Fuzzies.
A haunted level with giant books.
A desert area with a cannon that is controlled by the 3DS Gyro Sensor.
Another stage with an overhead view, which contains Pokeys, quicksand, and a Thwomp. However, this also could be the same stage as the one mentioned before.
A spooky area with a tightrope and a Big Boo.
A desert area with enemies in sand.
An area designed after an optical illusion with Toads (possibly the Toad Brigade).
An area which takes place outside a castle with Thwomps, green panels and Goombas.
A stage with boos and stairs that lead to blue clocks.
A level similar to the Puzzle Plank Galaxy.
Firmware Update
There is a firmware upgrade included with Super Mario 3D Land that tweaks the friends list. One of those tweaks is the addition of a 'Join Game' button, which you can see in the image above. Expect to see this feature as a part of the firmware upgrade in late November if you don't pick up the game.
What this update includes
-a button that allows you to join a friend's game online directly from the Friend's List.
-a feature that automatically moves friends who are online to the top of the Friend's List.
-the ability to scroll through your Friend's List more quickly by pressing Left or Right on both the Circle Pad and the D-Pad.

I have a lot of problems with it but when I think of it as just a 2d mario game but in 3d I've warmed up to it. The only real problems I have now are the footstep sounds. In every trailer that's all I can concentrate on.
I can't wait for the game, I own all the Mario games, and this is one of my most anticipated games this year! :D
I would not put a SW poll though, for poll rigging sake. See the more recentDiablo 3 HYPE thread or Uncharted 3 HYPE thread for reference. :P
http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/28874400/...and-the-heavens-shall-tremble--diablo-iii-hype-thread--56k?msg_id=333119678#333119678
Great thread btw, I gotta go get my keychain from Gamestop! 8)
EXIT : BTW, my hype is AAA for this game. It's the game that to me, is the reason to buy a 3DS. I just have a feeling Nintendo is releasing a Mario AAA bomb this holiday with this game. :P
Looks great but it doesn't make me want to go out right now or anytime soon and buy a 3DS just yet. It's definitly on my list when I eventuallly get one tho.
Looks like at least AA.
I want to get a 9.5 but probably get 8.5-9.0 because they give it bonus points practically being the first great game on the 3ds thats not a remake.
Why are people trying to underhype this game when it's by the same team that made Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2? I don't follow....
NeonNinja
1. It's Nintendo.
2. It's Nintendo.
3. It's on a handheld.
4. It's Nintendo.
5. Doesn't have guns, blood, gore, really lame VA, sci-fi, realism, swearing, M-rating, ect ect.

I wish people would stop playing the victim card for nintendo, especially since most of the people I've run into here in my short time have defended nintendo and their franchises to the death.
[QUOTE="NeonNinja"]Judging from the poll it isn't being underhyped at all.Why are people trying to underhype this game when it's by the same team that made Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2? I don't follow....

Yeah, the poll shows AAA. I'm just wondering why the AA votes are so numerous for a flagship game being developed for a platform in need of a major release like this right now by the team that created the two highest scoring exclusive games of this generation.
It's a legitimate question to ask, all things considered.
I'm expecting a solid 3D platformer. What excites me the most is how well the 3D stereo effect as been implemented, they must have built the levels with this in mind. I've downloaded alot of stereo 3D screenshots of the game and viewed them in 3D on 3DS, very nice.

Yes track record is a huge factor, but so is development time and goal. If you've seen the Miyamoto interview he basically says this game is abit on the easy side and their goal is to make it a very accessible 3D platformer for the people who play 2D Mario games but find the step towards the 3D ones to be too complex and frightening.
They also haven't put in alot of time on this project, max 2 years I would guess and around 3 years for each Galaxy game + I can imagine they are saving ideas for the Wii U Mario game. Everything about this game screams 8-9 territory.

Of course there will be people who will defend Nintendo because there are too many haters here in SW. It seems you don't really frequent here in SW because there are far too many Nintendo is doomed and will go third party, nintendo will fail, Wii U will fail, 3DS is the next Virtual Boy, and so on and so forth.[QUOTE="GD1551"][QUOTE="ChubbyGuy40"]

Galaxy 2 had a two year dev time and that got a 10. It was also easy to play if you stuck to the main stars needed to complete the game but was challenging because of the remaining 180 or so stars that aren't necessary to "complete" the game. Accessibility =/= a bad game. The two Galaxy games are accessible but have enough extra content and challenge tucked in them for them to be cIassics.
Second of all, why are you guessing how many years they put into this game? Dark Souls had two years, Uncharted 3 had two years, Forza Motorsport 4 had two years and they're all being hyped to hell and back. But Mario is something you "guess" has a "max of 2 years" and that isn't good enough?
