Super Mario Galaxy is still the best game so far this gen.

So what if GTA IV and MGS IV got tens here. Who cares outside of this small population of GS posters? SMG offered new physics never done before in a game. What did GTA IV bring new to the formula? Actually it removed tons of great gameplay from the series. I admit I've not played MGS IV but I've not heard of new and industry-changing gameplay from anybody, if it does please inform me of it.

All of this is just my opinion of course, so please feel free to add yours if you like.

I cannot talk for MGS4 as I have not played it, but GTA4 is one of my least favorite owned Xbox360 games. Halo, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4, and even The Darkness are all preferable to GTA4 and all it's minigame gimmicks.

Super Mario Galaxy is awesome. I would be proud to place it alongside Call of Duty 4, Bioshock or Mass Effect as one of the greatest games this generation. Still need to play MGS4

I kinda miss that game. Even after beating it with both mario and luigi with 242 stars.

I love seeing Super Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, and MGS4 on my shelf. They don't fight eachother or anything. It's amazing.

Allow me to take issue with something you said, "industry-changing gameplay". I really wouldn't say SMG had industry changing gameplay. It changed the way you played the core Mario games for sure but I don't think we are going to get a bunch of gravity themed platformers in the near future because of it. No existing franchise can have industry changing gameplay. It takes a new IP to really have the freedom to do something like that. Mario will always have to jump platforms and collect stars. Halo 3 must always be a FPS and Snake will always have to sneak his way around enemies.

There is nothing new about the physics in SMG. Actually, the physics engine in SMG is pretty poor compared to most complex physics heavy games. There was nothing in SMG that had never been done in gaming before, just a few things that had not been done in a Mario platformer before.

If you enjoy it, good for you. If you think its the best thing since sliced bread, then thats your opinion, your welcome to it.

I'm just pointing out its not new, high tech, or innovative from a gameplay standpoint. That of course has nothing to do with how fun you may think it is, or is not. I was just correcting your statement about "never done before in a game." You should have wrote "never done before in a mario game."

If it wasn't for MGS4 I would completely agree with you.

SMG was much better than I had anticipated and went far, FAR beyond 'just another Mario game'. It really did deserve to win GOTY 2007 and rests as my 3rd favourite game of all time. (After MGS4 and RE4)

So, your basing your opinion off you playing smg yourself, despite all the negative comments, but you won't give mgs its praise because of from what you heard?Suicide your account, that's failure and hypocrisy....

From what I heard smg was a little kiddy game as epic as it is it was a good game...so, can the same go for me?Since i heard smg was a little kiddy game, let me take that opinion without playing it, but ignore what someone says about mgs4, and go ahead and say it's superior...that's fair right?Because that's basically what you've done...

You can't compare mgs and galaxy, anyone who says anyone of them are better is pure opinion, forget ratings, forget scores, forget everything, this is halo killzone, gt forza, or any of that, these are two COMPLETELY different games who couldn't be more different than one another in any way possible, nothing is similar on either of them, I'll tell you what, I've played Galaxy, but not mgs4, and galaxy was so insanely fun.The colors, the graphics/art style, wave riding on the stinger was so much fun, I played it briefly and had a freakin BLAST..the game was amazing..

I admit I've not played MGS IV

You may want to actually play it before saying any other game is better or worse than it. You know because forming opinion about a game based on other's opinions rather than playing it is silly.

I hate when people make the point you are making. By your logic no game is unique and does something different because I'd bet that you can find some game that did whatever little feature years ago. You don't judge a game by it's small parts but rather by the sum of it's parts. And trust me, I have never played a game that has so much variety and yet at the same time does everything so refined and so well. And when I say variety I'm talking about everything, the music, level design, art style, etc. BTW, this is coming from someone who loves GTA IV. I did user reviews for both games and I gave them both a 10, but to be honest I had a tougher time deciding whether GTA IV deserved a 10 or a 9.5 then I did with Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy was an obvious 10 to me.

Games have reached a point where strong narrative elements have a huge impact on the overall experience. As a result, a game can have merely excellent (and not revolutionary) gameplay combined with narrative unrivalled in the medium, and get an exceptional score.

This shouldn't be as surprising to people as it seems to be.

I can tell you've never played MGS4. SMG is very, very good but it felt to me like Mario 64 in space. It would be nice to see Nintendo at least try to put together a form of quality story.

MGS4's first two chapters are some of the best, in recent memories, even from a fun factor perspective. The third so far is dragging a bit.

If one of your kids grew up to be Mario and the other Solid Snake...admit it Snake would be your favorite :P

Act 3's main mission is a throwback to MG2 on the MSX. Anyone here know what I'm talking about? Following the guard through the jungle?

An opinion I'd totally disagree wtih.

Don't get me wrong, I think SMG is a pretty good game...but it certainly does not have "industry-changing gameplay." Actually, I just consider it a new version of SM64 (and that's not a bad thing by any stretch to me).

uhh, no it isn't. MGS4 is a far better game in almost every term, although it is difficult to compare two different genre's of games.

SMG got good reviews around the block, no doubting it's a great game. but, if you look at the 8's and the 8.5's mgs4 is getting from sites like Eurogamer, they have ABSOLUTELY no idea what they're talking about. the reviews are Horrendous and the reviewers give terrible reasons for marking down the game. the only possible flaws that i can see are the install time. there's nothing really else wrong with the game that isn't based on opinion.

oh, and guess what i just noticed:

SMG

MGS

By "industry-changing" gameplay, I believe the TC meant that never before have we seen a physics engine do what SMG does. Yeah, go ahead bring up Crysis and other games with amazing physics, but are you running around small planets in those games? Each with their own gravitational pull? I Don't think so.

The developing in that physics engine for SMG must have taken so much time.

I brought my mom in to see the Good Egg Galaxy. I walked over to the edge and she was like "Yikes don't fall off." And I just totally did a leaping jump over the edge, being hauled around safely to the other side. It feels so good to do that.

What? Yes, Super Mario Galaxy is a really, really amazing game, there are more games out there. Orange Box, Bioshock, MGS4, GTAIV(Which I firmly believe Take-Two paid reviewers to give GTAIV a 10/10. Seriously.), COD4 and a couple other games. Yes, SMG is one the best games ever, but I wouldn't say the best game in this gen so far.

SMG is a great game.I am of course a huge fan of Snake and Mario. I would say MGS>SMG>GTA4. If Mario games actually had some type of story it would be more great then it already is, but since there is no story whatso ever, MGS4 will always get the edge. Anyone who says Mario is for the kids is an idiot. Mario is a Gangsta hahahahaha

Those physics have already been implemented in exactly the same way in other games, although maybe not for the entire duration of the game. A lot of sheep seem to be blinded by the Mario franchise and are unwilling to admit that, yes, the game has a lot of variety and is a lot of fun but is not "revolutionary" in the slightest. It's just another Mario platformer.

[QUOTE="csliney"]A lot of people will agree with you, a lot of people will disagree with you though , I will probably agree as I have never played a MGS game I liked more than any Mario platformers.Samurai_Xavier

Thanks. It seems that GTA IV is getting no love right about now.

Like I said I have not played MGS IV and probably never will because it just isn't my kind of game. I'm glad people are enjoying it though.

You play Gears of War, GTA4, Assasins Creed, ect, how is MGS4 not your kind of game? It should be like your dream game.

I just don't like stealth games in general, don't have the patience for them. Assassins Creed was different than most games that involve stealth, and that was not my favorite game anyways...

Thats one of the things I love about MGS games. You dont have to be stealthy if you dont want to. You can just shoot yourself through the whole game if you want to, of course, at certain points you do have to hide though. I havent played MGS4, but the reviews seem to say that in the game you can choose at all times whether to sneak past enemies or just shoot them, its your choice, and I love this freedom MGS gives.

The TC is simply stating an opinion that many share. Personally I don't even think SMG is the best game for the Wii, but if MGS was on the Wii it wouldn't even crack top 5.

actually if you check metacritic and GR, you would notice that SMG has a higher rating than MGS4.

so its not just his opinion...
