Ok, here's an example to end all of the sales are not important arguments.
In 1987, Squaresoft was a small compnay that was about to go out of business. They created this game called Final Fantasy for the Famicom. This game went to sell enough that it kept Squaresoft in business and the rest is history. If this game had flopped in sales, these are the games you would not have seen:
FF1-13, Parasite Eve, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Secret of Mana, Brave Fencer Musashi, Romancing Saga series, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Super Mario RPG, and many other classics as we know of it today.
Now tell me how sales aren't important. This was a quality developer that made many classic games. If they would have folded in 1987, you would never have experienced any of these games. How is that good for a gamer?
According to some in this thread, all they care about is that FF was released and nothing else. Then you would have missed some of the best games ever made if you were this short sighted.
