About bloody time. This game is extremely hard to find and a lot of people have had to resort to pirating it, but it has finally made its way to GOG.com. Only $10, well worth the money.

I always hear about this game from the PS Blogcast. I wonder if they talk about this one or the first.Â

Which is "better" SS1 or SS2?

SS2 is the one that tends to be mentioned the most.
I am a bit sad that GOG put the 2nd one up, but not the first. I'd love to play the 1st one before the 2nd.

Yeah, here!
Very easy to set up, and includes some mods and improvements to make the game more playable and smooth. Played SS1 last year, and it's still a great game... definitely check it out!
There was already a thread in SW about it a little wile ago.Â
Anyway, for anyone interested, the gameplay has aged well. Unlike Deus Ex (the only game which is comparable, and which has a ton of elements thus did not age as well), the game is a straightfoward RPG/Horror with a great level design and immersive atmosphere. The cyberpunk atmosphere is so thick and disturbing.Â
You're going to suck at the beginning because it is an RPG. Wen you fire a gun, it has a kickback because of the inexperienced character. Once you put a decent amount of points into your agility and weapons, the gunplay is good, there's no kickback, just aim and blissfully shoot. That is, if you have ammo. And if you have a decent amount of stats in your repair skill so you can fix your weapon if it breaks. You can also modify your weapon, to improve it.Â
The models (weapons, NPCs) are ugly as sin, and so are the graphics. For that, you'll need the God sent of graphical mods. The Lord bless everyone who created them.
HD object textures
HD world textures
HD space textures

HD weapon models
Just unzip everything in the 'DataPermanentMods' located in your System Shock 2 folder, and you're set to go.

Yeah I'm playing through it right now as a hmm.... Navy-ist.
Oh, and I am totally getting the same vibe as with Doom 3, that I am totally playing this game as if I'm there and not just playing a game.
I.E. crawling through entire game and being extremely anxious. I even got back into the habit of pausing the game every few minutes to take a breath.
If you play a game like me, as if every monster can kill you, it does make the game a lot longer I imagine :P

While the textures are nice, those are some painfully low res shots :? no 1080p?

How is the first System Shock? Does the gameplay hold up? Is it worth playing?mems_1224
It's a demanding game that may feel a little overwhelming at times, especially if you're not experienced with older and more complex/convoluted games (the levels are huge), but if you DL that freeware version posted above, you'll find it's very playable for such an old game, both due to the overall game quality, and due to some included mods.
I'd say its definitely worth playing... though I don't expect everyone will find it enjoyable.
Give it a try, see how you feel about it!

Photobucket resizes them, but i think i'm going with ImagineShack from now on..Â
Though it's 720p, i'm on a old laptop, it's ben a wile since i had a proper desktop.

Imageshack is good, except all my pics are 5.93mb raw and you can't upload anything above 5

ramealdabest
I tried that link last night (multiple times), and I don't think it's functional anymore :(
Stay away from the mod that upgrades the midwife model. The vanilla model looks better and is far more creepy.
Â
First time players should also go Navy career and invest in Standard Weapons/Hacking/Cyber-Affinity in the beginning. ...You'll have an easier time.
Â
Ammo is sparse so the wrench is gonna be your best friend.

Is Rebirth and the weapons model mod worth using?
Shogo is fun, but it's not even close to the same level as SS2.I bought Shogo instead. You get to be a robot.
I feel that I made the right decision.

Is Rebirth and the weapons model mod worth using?
Hell yes, definitely the weapons mod. That's a must.
Some people don't like the rebirth models but I think when you have world textures and don't update the hybrids/NPCs it clashes too much with each other. So I used them all to keep it consistent and not pull me out of the experience

personally not a fan of the rebirth models, they remind me of that ps2 game second sight, or time splitters.
I only ever played the demo for this when I used to pick up PCgamer mag as a kid. maybe I'll give it a playthrough, it doesn't look like much but I can't really hate on it for being so old and all.
For any of you who like reading, here's a novel that's heavily influenced by System Shock. It's one of the best I've ever read.

Yeah use all the mods. I did it and it makes it look pretty decent, definitely playable this day and age. Please Log In to post.
