crudely, i normally look at the amps on the 12V rail. those amps x 12 should be the peak wattage which can be drawn on the 12v rail eg: gpu.

i usually compare this with both TDP and real world power draw data. because peak is peak, you won't need much overhead beyond 'peak'.

You don't want to run the PSU at peak output all the time. My AX750 can output more than 750 but I don't want to push it.

exactly. you don't. i never advocated that.

even just 5-10% overhead beyond 'peak' would be enough.

@kitty: 850 watts for 2 cards?

Yes. i asked last night, if my new psu would be enough for two 780s and clyde pretty much told me I'd need a new one.

Its not the output power, its the quality of the PSU that worries me.

I see and I understand now. I was on the ropes with choosing which brand I wanted actually. The Corsair 750 watt I looked at, the reviews pushed me away.
And I eventually decided on this one. My previous psu was a rosewill and I had no issues with it. I was kinda upset that I didn't wait though, because the next day a really good EVGA one was put on newegg.

Shyte son I coulda told you that lol, usually you want a 850-900 watt power supply if you use 2 cards, also make sure the supply is certified as well.

Has anyone (@GoldenElementXL?) tried out the PS3 and 4 version of Destiny side by side yet?

Corsair make some of the best PSU's on the market. If you want a new PSU, check out Johnny Guru.

That 750W would fine.

269 watts per card? so 538W or 49A on the 12V rail. but that's before adding say 5-10% overhead room.

and all the rest of it

Wow. that psu has 62.4A on the 12V rail.

Depends on the cards though :P I don't think you'd need that much for mid range cards like my current set up. Though I do like my cards, they can keep up with clyde's 780.
pc part picker says for my current set up, I'd use 538 watts. And I definitely will make sure it's certified. My new one is, my old one wasn't, so thats why I never attempted anything on it.
But I had this on my wishlist www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438018 and I was hoping it would be enough for my future upgrades.

Thank you for the link. I'll check into that one, or possibly another. Though I 'll link it, and ask before jumping the gun.
I looked at this review, before I purchased my current psu.

lol. I'd appreciate any help you can guys can offer on a psu. I don't know as much as I probably should about them.
I don't want to make a bad purchase in the future, as it might take awhile to replace.

@kitty: if i'm honest i don't know too much about what specific psu's are available. just looking into your dream of two GTX780's, I'd suggest a PSU which meets all your other requirements would need a minimum of ~56A on the 12V rail.

Usually the set ups I've seen with dual cards is 850 watts at the lowest, if people can get it to work with 750 watts then that's pretty good but I'd imagine after everything you'd have like 60-80 watts to spare which is a little under my comfort zone.

If you have the money I'd get that power supply you linked, that would probably last you for awhile.

Corsair 860. Or something from SeaSonic. Go have a read of Johnny Guru's site at PSU's that you like the look of. He puts those PSU's through the ringer so if your chosen PSU can pass his tests and gets his seal of approval then you know its good.

Kind of need some backstory for that to be funny. If they're doing that just because she's a girl gamer/youtuber then it's distasteful, but if she's clearly full of herself then I can understand.

The trick with PSU's is to run them at 50% load. That way its the most efficant and its not getting hot. A good quailty 650-700W PSU is more than man enough to handle a single OC'd CPU and GPU as you would most likely be using about 500'ish watts.

@clyde46: My power supply is actually overkill for my 760, got a free upgrade to a 800w from a 600w. Think I've heard to many horror stories with power supplies over the years so that makes me jumpy, it's the same thing with liquid cooling, I should have cooling but I just can't do it lol.

Well if they distance themselves from their work, it's easy money. But if they're actually passionate about it... tough luck.

@parkurtommo: I've yet to find a female youtuber/streamer that doesn't accept donations or cares about them. I don't think I'd ever date one ether since most of them do it for the attention and not cause they love what they do. I do photoshop projects sometimes for one of my friends GF who does cosplays and streams, I'd seriously couldn't handle it lol.

Okay. That's what I was told before by someone else. I've always looked at that when selecting a psu. But I probably should do my research more and see what kind of wattage cards require or will use, to.
But I'll settle with two 780s or two vapor/tri-x 290s. I can for sure get two 290s.

That would be under my comfort zone as well. I'd like some headroom. I'll look into getting an 850 watt one then. I was trying to fix up my case when I decided on the new one. Sucks that the EVGA showed up a day later, or this wouldn't even be a concern. But I'll get it at a later time. I need ram for my other rig, and I want a ssd.

Seasonic is good. I'll look for some and put them on my list. I will do that, thanks.

Right then, this is the list of upgrades in the order you want them.

1. New PSU. If you are running dual cards then you want the best dam PSU you can get.

2. SSD. This alone will make your PC seem like its brand new everytime you turn it on.

3. RAM - 8GB is really all you need for a gaming rig. Plenty for running games and other programs in the background.

2ndwonder aka @kitty , if you've got a z87 motherboard, which it seems is the case, i'd echo Clyde's #2 suggestion 'get an ssd', and i'd recommend using that intel srt thing.

but you know, it depends on lots of things. for me intel srt is a good compromise for budget, disc space micromanagement, and performance. linus tech tips found 5x better performance in a hard disc benchmark on the second run (eg: when properly cached).

another good thing about it - your ssd can fail and you'll be all right.

@clyde46: Never been a fan of them, I guess if you're on a budget and can't get a NVIDIA card then it would be fine to get a AMD. Plus it seems like more and more games now and days seem to have issues with AMD cards a lot more than NVIDIA cards.

@kitty: Get yourself something like 12gb or 16gb of ram, 8gb actually might not be enough in the next few years with games starting to require 6gb of ram. If you get a SSD and only want to put your OS and maybe a few programs/games a 150-250 gb should be fine, if you want to put games and no os I'd go for the 500gb+ SSD since games are starting to take up a shyte load of room.

Also @CrownKingArthur ssd was the next thing I had planned to purchase. Samsung 840 Evo 120GB
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-EVO-Series-2-5-Inch-MZ-7TE120BW/dp/B00E3W15P0/

I have the ram covered, when I started off with my first build. Phenom ii x4 965, 6850, I was running 4 gb ram.
I'd sometimes have problems after quitting a game. My desktop would run sluggish for awhile. I knew what the problem was, ram. Once I upgraded to 8, it went away.
I don't see myself ever needing anymore than 8.

I'm most likely going to buy a whole new kit of ram. I'm running x4 2GB sticks. I planned on buying more ram anyways as my second rig needs it, and then I can use it. So I'll most likely move this ram over to it. Got my eyes set on something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233278 if that is the case with games requiring more.

Windows scales with the amount of RAM you have in your system. As for an SSD, the way I do it is have one SSD for my OS and the few programs that I used on a regular basis and another just for games. You don't actually need an SSD for games, a standard 1TB would be fine.

Windows scales with the amount of RAM you have in your system. As for an SSD, the way I do it is have one SSD for my OS and the few programs that I used on a regular basis and another just for games. You don't actually need an SSD for games, a standard 1TB would be fine.

Doesn't windows only take 3gb of ram?

@clyde46: Never been a fan of them, I guess if you're on a budget and can't get a NVIDIA card then it would be fine to get a AMD. Plus it seems like more and more games now and days seem to have issues with AMD cards a lot more than NVIDIA cards.

it scales. There is a minimum and a recommended but Windows will always scale based on the amount of ram in your system.

yeah just be a non-participant.

to be fair that women said she 'knew' she was 'beautiful'. a person broadcasting statements like that is asking for trouble.

then again simply being female with an audience of gamers is troublesome enough.

good old circles aye? good old circles.

Alright, here's how much I have played on my next generation machines (PC disqualified solely because I have not played any next gen game on my PC).

WII U: 133 hours, 51 minutes (since December 7, 2013)

Highest Play Time: Mario Kart 8, 37 hours, 41 minutes

NINTENDO 3DS: 643 hours, 31 minutes (since March 27, 2011)

Highest Play Time: Mario Kart 7, 70 hours, 48 minutes

PLAYSTATION VITA: 140 hours, 2 minutes (since October 12, 2013)

Highest Play Time: Persona 4 Golden, 118 hours, 16 minutes

PLAYSTATION 4: 1 hour, 34 minutes (since April 3, 2014)

Highest Play Time: Resogun, 1 hour, 2 minutes

... yeah, guys, I think I might have a problem.

You clearly have a fetish for Nintendo based products.

Just good games, my friend

(I want to point out that the highest played game on my 3DS and Wii U, and PS4 if you're inclined to add that too, put together, isn't as played as my highest played Vita game)

It's Chie or gtfo

Hell I'd pick Marie over Yukiko if she was someone I could put in my party

@clyde46: Adult things.

@Ballroompirate: Yukiko doesn't start as bad, but she's pretty annoying by the end. Her canon pairing is with Teddie, which is exactly what she deserves.
