They use that too, in combination with the other tests.
I find it bizarre that I can sit on my ass all day and yet still be considered "fit" according to the Portuguese fitnessgram system thingy that they use in physical education. We do an endurance test which is basically just running back and forth as long as you can, and I did 61 which is exactly the amount I needed to be considered "fit", and then I did 21 push ups which is above fit, then 30-something sit ups which is also above what's considered fit. I'm just confused, I shouldn't be this healthy with the kind of lifestyle and interests I have.
well, VO2max is a predictor of aerobic performance, and VO2max is mostly genetically determined. seems that fitnessgram uses the 'pacer' 20m shuttle run. http://www.nova.edu/projectrise/pacer_manual_42309_jk.pdf
According to Mahar et al Your VO2 peak could be predicted from this equation: VO2peak = 47.438 + (PACER*0.142) + (Gender[m=1, f=0]*5.134) – (body mass [kg]*0.197), R = .65, SEE = 6.38 ml·kg–1·min–1.
47.438 + (61 * 0.142) + (1*5.134) - body mass (kg) * 0.197) <-- I'm gonna use a body mass of 60 kg as a guess but obviously you would measure your body mass and pop that value in the equation. The VO2peak would be 49mL/kg/min which I can tell you now is very good.
Much of your 'fitness' probably comes from your youth (VO2max declines with age), and I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you're not carrying unwanted excess fat - not having this will really help with that mL/kg/min value and of course fat's just a metabolically inactive energy storage you've gotta carry around which would decrease the number of shuttles a person would do. Yes the fitness tests are supposed to be relative to age but of course some people will be training and will decline slower (or even enhance their fitness), and other people will be totally sedentary and suffer a more rapid decline in fitness.

I have a desk job in IT and I workout on lunch to stay fit as a fiddle.
I work night shifts stocking at a grocery store (turned down a safety manager position for a private contractor at a oil company so I could go back to school), was 202 pounds when I started earlier this month and now I'm at 192 pounds.

Ugh... Math. :P Well if I remember correctly I'm around 70 kg. And yeah, I'm not fat, but the problem is I'm super skinny, like unhealthy skinny (because of my sedentary lifestyle). Also, now I was able to do 61 in that test but just last year I could only do maybe 40. It's just weird man. I shouldn't be able to do that.
@parkurtommo: sure thing man it is psymon100.
70kg, that would make a vo2peak of 47mL/kg/min, which is still very good.
right so let me see if i understand, in a year you've improved from 40 to 61 shuttles without doing any training?
the only possibility that comes to mind is perhaps you used to have an iron deficiency anaemia the last time you did the test, and now you don't. a year without training - you're right, fitness shouldn't improve. but if iron status was really poor last time, and this time its 'normal' - that could elicit an improved performance.
uncommon in males though. idk really i'm not convinced it was an iron deficiency but its an explanation that might fit.

Very possible, I've always had an unhealthy diet. I also had (and still have to a certain degree) sleep deprivation that year.
@parkurtommo: yeah with those field based tests the tester can't tell the reason why a testee stopped. hopefully it was volitional fatigue (achieved their max). in a lab, measuring the metabolic gases it is possible to determine whether or not their effort was really truly maximal.
haha, but mate - whatever you're doing is clearly working! why change a winning formula? next year - +50% aerobic capacity again, let's see you go bro. let's see you go.
@parkurtommo: Shit forgot to add you lol, has been a hectic week at work cause of black friday is coming up so I'll add you on Steam

Working retail will do that for you.
I'd say maybe they're better on a tablet, but making me use one app to browse the albums on offer and another to actually download them is just dumb design. #firstworldproblems
So far I've grabbed:

No comment on your music selection right now, but I used Google Images to find out who your new avy was. It took me to her Twitter which had bewbs. #firstworldsolutions Down with Sharpie; Bring back Coffey.
Persona Q is fun. Lots to do in terms of grinding, though. I want my entire party to be capable of kicking butt, not just my main group. Said group being Minato, Souji, Mitsuru, Yukari and Yukiko.
Also, early Thanksgiving to everyone. Friends, family, blah blah blah. I'm going shopping after dinner tomorrow.

Still a weaboo, mmmwksil? :P
Just teasing, don't get mad :x

First of all, it's spelled "weeaboo". Second of all, by definition I cannot be a weeaboo as I do not think of myself as Japanese and never have wanted to be Japanese. Third, you have some nerve showing up out of the blue to drop insults. Go back to the hole you crawled out of.
I am also kidding. Mostly. First two points are true.

Haha, fair enough :P.
How've you been? I've recently made the transition into university and I'm getting my first semester done soon (exams coming up). Everything's going smoothly here ;). I just can't stand the cold :-/. The weather here literally ranges from -19 to 13 degrees in the span of a week. Pick a season, Canada!
@93BlackHawk93: They look much better in person than in pictures. The pikachu is surprisingly high quality for something that was just $13.
My recommendation is to go buy yourself one or two, see if you like them. If you do, go buy more big you don't, you're only $13 out and you at least have a nintendo figure to show for it, I guess.
Dat fanboy logic >.>
Nah, but seriously. Ninty's new cash cow. I still don't get how adults go crazy over Skylander figures and now these Amiibo, but I suppose neither Acti or Ninty care all that much too :P
Swag for the display case!
Ah can't wait for tonight, get to write up my Manager XD. Hopefully she learns not to give me shit for her mistakes.
Happy Thanksgiving! After a rather shit year things have finally been great; I have a lot to be thankful for and I'm hoping everyone else does too!
Anyone have any big plans? Biggest plans for me are having Thanksgiving with just my wife and puppy this year in our new home, and then going out at 6 pm to hopefully nab Shadow of Mordor and inFamous: Second Son, plus some other movies and TV shows for cheap.

Congrats on getting into university XV. happy for you man. and welcome back. always nice to see old loungers and friends posting again.
Aww, thanks Guardian :). Nice to see you guys are still here too ;).
Pokemon Ruby remake looks fantastic, played it 8 years ago and it feels like it was yesterday. so much nostalgia and memories. I still prefer the old art direction (don't kill me please) but will still buy and enjoy. would love pokemon red remake as well. the soundtrack and adventure are unforgettable. the soundtrack in pokemon gives a sense of adventure that not many RPG's can do.
My Bayonetta 2 copy has arrived as well. but not really in the mood to mash buttons right now, just playing some Phoenix Wright and kirby.
Oh lord, I'm jealous.
I played Bayonetta 2 at a friends place who owns a Wii U and it's just phenomenal. It's the only reason I want one at the moment (still not enough to make me get one though). I wish it was a multi plat release so that I could pick it up too. Meanwhile, PS4's game list is a desert. What's up with all the flops recently man? Far Cry 4, Destiny, Drive Club, Assassins Creed Unity (I expected this one), all of these games missed the mark. I don't even see any quality games coming out at least for another few months, it's a shame.
