Shit meme, implies that game reviews n criticism was better before when it was even worse somehow or as bad at best.
The grading is the least of the short comings of game reviews. The field is just wildly underdeveloped, has poor virtues, and business model justifies inane shit like one n done reviews done in a rushed manner.

Old computer magazines had great reviews, by that, i'm talking C64, not Pcgamer and similar ilk.
There's also a change in the way culture itself works. Back in the C64 days it was a niche' enthusiastic hobby where someone sitting at home could homebrew their own games, reaching a few thousand copies being considered a huge success.
Now we live in a culture (and indeed a culture war as very evident by these pages) of people desperately seeking validation within the medium. Extending to other stuff like comic book movies where anyone ruining a metacritic or Rotten Tomato score become the devil incarnate.
Pandering to the expectations of geek culture is big money, be it hyperbole praise or outrage, Hello it's Jeremy From The Quartering here.
People are intrisicly more likely to listen to views that agree with their perspective than have it challenged.
Not to imply it was perfect, I agree to a degree, back then many outlets simply acted as an extension of advertisement, and still do, but this was far less the case with European Computer enthusiasts.
Very much a happy Bilbo Baggins before he wandered off with a wizard to get ring cancer, it was a far more innocent, comfy time.
@uninspiredcup: no they didn’t, they had all the same issues goons have now.
Is there effort put into explaining the gameplay with any sort of detail? No.
Is there effort put into explaining the process of low level play and learning the systems to get to mid level play? No
Was there any effort put into grasping the high level play in the systems? No
As far as any sort of criticism, they were trash then, they are trash now. It’s not about liking the right games or whatever, they often did a terrible job actually explaining n describing the thing they were critiquing.
Trash is trash.
@khoofia_pika: Everything's going great, khoof :). Playing a bit of everything on Switch/PC, reading Mistborn trilogy, not watching anything, and currently I'm applying for medical school.
What about you?
@jg4xchamp: Champ, Fire Emblem wants you to stop using his real name. He didn't use Chaz's real name and he feels bad about what he did.
@XVision84: Aw hell yeah dude, Mistborn is awesome. How're you liking it?
I've been watching Boardwalk Empire. Started a couple weeks back, just got to season 3. Really digging it so far.

Yes. They had a higher word count as well as smaller text extending the depth of the analysis for what were far more primitive games that could be finished in a 10-20 minute sitting. It's objectively more effort when measured against current standards.
Early European Computer Magazines generally had a higher expectation of it's limited audience than the now wide-net attempting to summarize for a mass audience, much of whom, presumably look at the score than read the article itself for some quick gauge where any form of analysis is reduced to a yes/no.

Might as well have typed "please use his real name more, it's pissing him off".
@khoofia_pika: It's great, I'm a quarter way through book 3. I enjoyed Stormlight even more, it's by the same author. You like fantasy books?
I've heard a lot about Boardwalk empire but never gave it a shot. I've got a long list of shows I gotta get to eventually lol.
Where are you posting these days?
@jg4xchamp: I'm addressing our discussion since I've got the time but I can't break it down like you since I'm on my phone. Hopefully you can make sense of it ?
I agree with you on one point: that kind of behaviour should not be normalized nor should we let it fly. This can be done in ways other than personally attacking that person. We can discuss with the public how their words are wrong/backwards and refrain from communicating with them. This would hurt their business and indirectly influence their reputation. Why must forceful slander or deplatforming be the answer? Don't think I'm cherry picking either, some people at GAF are going after Zoe (her appearance, her personality, etc.) which I think is absolutely wrong.
Just because you disagree with Milo and Alex Jones, should they not have a voice? Wouldn't it be better to debate with them and allow reason to be the deciding factor? It's my personal belief that everyone should have the right to express themselves and we should stamp out bigotry with debate & law rather than violence.
What you stated as productivity isn't really productive. The supporters of the people you are criticizing are just going to be more infuriated because they feel they haven't received justice. Chances are others will come in their place. If the toxicity between the two sides were lessening then I'd agree with you but the opposite is happening.
The constitution was well ahead of its time and also used to remove the very racism and bigotry with which you oppose. Speech can have consequences beyond the law, agreed, but justice should be delivered in court. Not on Twitter.
@jg4xchamp: Come on, Champ. This is childish. You two can sort your issues out in private, I'd rather stay out of it. Don't use someone's name in public if they aren't comfortable with it.
Just because he did something wrong it doesn't mean you have to too, you're both good people from the same community.
Sorry if that sounds "holier than thou", I don't mean it to come across like that, I just hate to see more people getting upset.

It's my favourite genre!
Mistborn is my favourite Sanderson series, but Stormlight is definitely a close second (haven't gotten around to reading Oathbringer though... that's gonna be a timesink).
Mostly I've been lurking on Era and Reddit. Don't really post much anywhere, I guess I enjoy observing from the sidelines lol
@khoofia_pika: It's my favourite genre too :). Do you have any other fantasy series you'd recommend? I'll be looking for a new series after Mistborn. I've read Tolkien, kingkiller, and ASOIAF.
Hope you enjoy Oathbringer, it's a tad slower than the other books in my opinion but has some awesome character development. The next book is coming out next year and the working title is The Rhythm of War!

Oh shit, people talking about Sanderson and Stormlight! Love Sanderson! Waiting impatiently for book 4. I constantly check his page to see how far he is on the rough draft. 47%!
Reading books from Joe Abercrombie while I wait. First Law Trilogy is the shit.

Look into Joe Abercrombie and Malazan Book of the Fallen. Malazan is a really large series. Ten books in the main storyline and whole bunch of side books.
@Chutebox: Yeah, Sanderson does a great job of communicating with his fanbase. The guy writes with admirable regularity, I'm surprised how fast he makes quality books.
I've heard about Malazan. Is it true that the lore of Malazan is very deep and cryptic so you don't really know what's going on?
The first law and the shattered sea series both look interesting, I'll give them a shot after Mistborn. Thanks!

Definitely check out The Broken Earth trilogy. It's not a very typical fantasy story or setting, but it's really good. Also Wheel of Time feels like an obvious recommendation (if you haven't read it already, that is), just for the first four books if nothing else. It's a massive series though, so definitely a bit of an investment, time-wise.

I've got the first Malazan book sitting on my bookshelf, it's definitely on my to-read list. Just gotta find the time now lol
@khoofia_pika: I actually couldn't get into The Broken Earth trilogy. I read through a third of book 1 and the writing style really put me off. I'll give it another go down the line because I know it's been very well received.
Wheel of time is on my list, I want a break from long series so I put that on the backburner. Def looking forward to it though and I hope the Amazon show turns out well.
Thanks for the recommendations ;).
Damn, FireEmblem_Man is gone! R.I.P, you was a good friend :(
Also, welcome back @khoofia_pika I hope you stick around this time :)
HEY! First of all, I'm not into Loli's! Secondly, I'm not dead yet :P Third, I think you're a good friend too :D
@Chutebox Bears play like crap, offensively, Nagy's play calling, Trubisky missing open shots, and the penalties! How da fuq do you go back 40 yards after giving Allen Robinson the ball to get at least field goal range? Bears really deserved that loss and if they can't fix that, we are the new Jacksonville Jaguars this year. At least our defense remained solid to make it a low scoring game.
@FireEmblem_Man: I had a talk with Music Man himself so you should be thankful of him. Nice to have you back :)
MILF>>>>>>>>>>>>lolis.
LOL, I agree about MILF's >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Loli's

BTW, there's another set of Mistborn books (Wax and Wayne) after the original trilogy
This forum is turning into a very shit Game Of Thrones without sex scenes to tide you through the boring bits.
I donno, never actually watched it, waiting week to week on shows is torture. Learned that from the shit fantastic show, Lost.
Netflix has really perpetuated the idea of binge-watching as normality to point not willing to wait.

They're not as good though.
Still pretty decent.
Even with really primitive technology YS opening captures that fairy-tail sense of adventure far better than a lot of RPG's today.
what he do?
Glad you asked rib.
You see some goons thought they had a cute gacha moment and needed to appeal to neogaf1 twits, and in their infinite goondom, decided to post Charizard's gaf 2(resetera post) in a screen with his system wars post I guess, and also mention that he wrote reviews for gaming bolt. Which happens to be a place where Chaz's actual name is written, but goon here thinks he didn't actually tell people Chaz's real name.
I mean don't tell that to Xvision tho, we don't want to add more credence to my position that gaf1 goons are stage 5 idiots who can't follow basic logic of their own actions.
All of it proving that even if Chicago is a city, we should never forget that it's part of the mid west wasteland full of the dumbest mother fuckers you will find on God's green earth. Glorified slobs who more or less trailer trash but with an actual home. Mentally on par with boomers.
Hey Goon if your bum ass team is gonna be on primetime games so much, can they at least get a real quarterback for once in their existence. Because aint no one trying to see substandard slobs like Mitchell Trubitsky in a night game.

Did a quick google search. So he just brought up Chaz's posts unprompted? for i guess the gaf equivalent of upvotes or likes, and then provided additional details to find him?
