I'm going to be very cautious about buying this game. As a huge Morrowind fan Oblivion was a disappointment, I'm hoping the trend does not continue toward simplification, consolization, poor story, lack of creativity, lack of variety, etc.

Morrowind was something special. Oblivion was just ...okay.

- More like MOrrowind and Daggerfall, not liek Oblivion

- Please have good LEVEL UP stuff, not the crap that was in Oblivion. We dont want emeies to level up as we do.

drufeous

THIS

ugh thats one of the things that irks me them most. whats the point of having level scaling? just creates a false sence of progression.

AncientDozer

I don't blame consolization. That's ridiculous. They did, however, simplify Oblivion to a degree with fewer weapons and armor and the inability to wear clothes over or under armor.

The UI and menus in Oblivion were clearly made for a console and a total chore to use on a PC.

on the tech side, better animations, more believable water effects, and better draw distances (or atleast hide the limits with mist or something) would be great.

get out of cyrodiil. randomly generated environments in a bland fantasy setting arent fun. even if bethesda sticks to randomly generating so much of their game world (although it would be nice if they didnt...), atleast have a better art direction and setting to give it some personality.

make the various factions have goals that are so conflicting that the player has to chose a few rather than be able to join them all.

better characters. meeting new people should be just as exciting as finding a new dungeon.

i like the idea of making action oriented combat. but if they are going to do it, then really do it. standing in front of an enemy and swinging until he is dead isnt very fun. counters, more fluid dodges, hit zones for ranged attacks, and that sort of thing.

AI can always be improved.

better leveling system. i like the idea of leveling what you do, but theres something wrong when you have to avoid using your best skills so you get a decent build, have to jump grind, and avoid sleeping. perhaps making it revolve around trainers would be best.

im sure there are more, but those are some of the bigger ones.

AncientDozer
Random generated? Nothing was randomly generated as far as I'm aware, except loot and enemies appearing. Also, uh, if you're standing around that's doing it wrong when you're fighting. I never stood still but then again I liked archery. The leveling is fine, too. You just need to make a build that caters to what YOU want.

there is a good deal of randomly generated content. mostly any tree, rock, bush, or plantlife was randomly placed. the entire topography was vaguely manipulated for a few areas and then the computer did the rest. its not different for every player, but thats how the world everybody played in was made.

warrior combat is a very simply hack n slash and adding sneak attacks for thieves doesnt make it much more involving. ranged fighting was mostly just backing up while firing. again, not very exciting.

and the leveling is not fine. as ive already said, you have to avoid using your main skills so you can level others and get a diverse set of high stat bonuses upon leveling (leading most players to put their most used skills as minor ones, which is just plain backwards). even the leveling of certain skills isnt without drags, like having to jump for hours and hours to level the acrobatics skill. is it somewhat realistic? sure. is it mind numbingly dull? you bet. and then once you maximize your build, you have to stop leveling (so enemies dont scale past you) by not allowing your character sleep.

Something is wrong. Daggerfall was gigantic, Morrowind was smaller, and Oblivion was even smaller..

The next TES will be a generic corridor FPS with added multiplayer, i can see it now.

Hopefully it uses Id Tech 5, but it might be too late depending on when development started and close that was to their acquisition of Id. As a matter of fact, any engine would be better than Gamebryo.

Hmm..

-New Engine that allows for the same level of moddability as the current ones

-Better environments. This is a big one especially when it comes to NPCs. What can be really endemic of these games is that the NPC's always seem dead/dull as all hell. They just bumble about so damn rigidly in the game world, even when there doing things like warming themselves to a fire, eating food etc they still seem pretty damn dead and it makes the world feel alot less immersive then it should be. I'd like NPCs to be able to actually live in the world. To be able to actually look like they are alive as humans instead of pre-programmed robots. In otherwords, something more or less along the lines of the Witcher in terms of how people interact in the world. That kind of liveliness.

In regards to environment i'd actually like to be able to see more of the consequences of my actions in the world. If I slaughter a village of innocents, I expect the surrounding regions to place a warrant on my head and I expect to occasionally be bogged down by high profile bounty hunters looking to collect. If I kill the king or some very high level official then I expect the outlying villages that were loyal to said king to hate my guts and be unwelcoming of my presence. As in they will mark there prices higher because of me, outright refuse service, or even have citizens notify the closest town that the King Killer is in town.\ They did a pretty good job of something that resembles this in New Vegas with faction reputations, but there was definitely room for improvement.

- Greater variety in quest. The kill somebody, fetch this item, resolve village conflict stick can get a little old. Granted it can still be fun but some of the approaches to them can feel like the same bloody quest. Some more variety in quest could be a lot nicer. I.e. if you choose an evil path, a quest could involve competing with the local serial killer in killing as many homeless as possible in a city without provoking the attention of the town guard in a fixed period of time. Or if you are good, something along the lines of kill a bunch of trolls with as little use of magic as possible while relying on environmental weapons like ballistas(which you should be able to aim), catapults, hot oil, your standard explosive barrels while also making sure that (as an optiional objective: to make sure that half the town garrison doesn't get killed).

-More unique enemies. These games always seem to have guys that always really do look different but its always just some variation of the armor, speed, attack values or something but with extra looks. I would like enemies to do things that are truly different. I.e. Mages that never make any attacks but always summon new undead against you without any hesitation about swarming you with them, ogres that pick you up and throw you, giant Spiders that crawl on ceilings and walls and always comes with its own mini swarm of little spiders or even demons that use the dead bodies of the innocent to summon additional demonhost. That kind of level of variety.

That would be pretty awesome. The could do so much with TES (again all I have played is oblivion), and especially the skills. More specifically the spells. It would be interesting to have weather altering abilities that effected the environment and such too.

I just remembered one of the problems I had with oblivion (although not a big one). I play it on PC and it feels as though you can NEVER get this game to run flawless (in every area). It always has parts where the frames dip if only for a bit. IDK seemed like poor coding to me :P. I wonder how much my new hardware will help (didnt upgrade GPU though). It is probably the GPU alone that is hurting me so probably not. I have an 8800 GT btw (yes still an 8800 GT).

Actually no bathrooms makes perfect sense for a game taking place in a medieval fantasy setting.

Where do you guys think it will be set? I mean they say it's a sequel to Oblivion in the sense that it happens chronologically after it just like Oblivion was a sequel to Morrowind and the events of Morrowind were vaguely referenced. I don't think they'd do Cyrodil again.

- Make it more like Morrowind. - A new graphics engine is ESSENTIAL. Especially one that can produce decent animations and generate LOTS of NPCs. - Voice actors, and lots of them. Less hand holding. I don't remember dying in Oblivion at all. Morrowind was a pretty difficult game and I'd like if the new TES was too. - Bring back pauldrons/seperate gauntles/clothing and armor at the same time. - I'd also like to see the ridiculous amounts of armor pieces return. That was probably one of the most disappointing things about Oblivion to me. There was only like 6 suits apiece for Light and Heavy. How are you supposed to create a unique character like that? I can think of more but I feel like playing Bad Company right now...

Okay follow me here, take morrowind right? Update the graphics, audio, etc. BAM! You have a GOTY!

Seriously though, jst more of everything I guess, more 'main storyline quest' like dark brotherhood, mages quest. Needed more overacrching stories like that imo. Just impove on everything in eneral, don' fix what isn't broke right? Just make some improvemnets here and there....and make it more like morrowind! lol. Oh, and bring werewolves back as well. (Vampires vs Werewolf questline?)

Little to no level or loot scaling, it absolutely ruined Oblivion for me. Make the world extremely large with vast open fields and small towns scattered around with random quests (a la Daggerfall) or make the world compact with lots of detail and hand-made quests (a la Morrowind). Having something in-between will tarnish the game.
