[QUOTE="Ilived"]Rare did Goldeneye.caje47
I just read a Wikipedia article on them, and apparently Free Radical was formed from members of Rare that worked on GoldenEye and Perfect Dark.
Everyone knows that but at the time it was under Rare's name entirely. Though not everyone who did Goldeneye and Perfect Dark left Rare.
Valve is number one merely for the Half-Life series for me.
Second would be Id simply for creating the genre, but as of lately they suck. Their last GREAT game was quake 2.
Epic deserves a fair amount of credit too though.
Valve? They only made Half-Life and Bungie only did Halo. They don't count since they haven't ventured outside the box yet. I would go with id software. They got Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein. Nobody can top that list. You know what, to be honest, the only company who should be there is id software and perhaps Crytek.Ilivedwow.
Not 2K Boston/Irrational, they are somewhat responsible for the Death of my second favorite multiplayer franchise.

But you cannot deny the awesomeness of System Shock 2 and Bioshock.
[QUOTE="XenoNinja"]I would have to say Nintendo.crazyjames1080
Nintendo develop FPS?
Yeah, some of the best ever made! Duck Hunt, and soon, Link's Crossbow Training.

Dude! You totally forgot about Geist!
No Free Radical? Timesplitters is a great series and Haze look like a good game.

Actually I am not sure that they belong on that list... the Timesplitters series was pretty good, yes, but Haze has not shown me enough for me to actually claim that it will define the genre in years to come.
And their history just isn't quite up to par to make up for Haze's semi-lackluster impressions...

Doom 3 and Quake IV were terrible. I'll take HL, HL2, TF, Portal any day of the week over a Doom or Quake. Also, Bungie did Marathon, Pathway Into Darkness and Myth. You're forgetting some history.
Quake 4 is an awesome game for $20. Solid SP and crazy multiplayer. I have a feeling Quake 5 will be awesome (its going to made by ID, q4 was made by raven software.)

Let's see I don't know much about valve but Bungie was the first company to make a fps with dual wielding, and a large focus on story, and I'm sure Valve deserves any credit they have recieved for their use of physics in games.

Well I sure Timesplitters 4 is probably going to make up for Haze if it doesn't do that well. But Haze look good anyway.

Yeah, I just really would like to get my hands on Haze before I make lofty claims about FR's future.

You refuse to put up the devs that are widely known for making the first good console shooter and some of the best games ever because you don't like their new game? And Goldeneye 007 wasn't just good, it was considered nearly perfect, and is still mentioned with Zelda: OOT, Half-Life 2 and Perfect Dark as one of the best games ever. They followed that up with yet another game considered "nearly perfect" which is again always listed with Zelda: OOT, Half-Life 2 and Goldeneye 007 as the best games of all time.
They then split away from Rare and make the TimeSplitters series, which has a massive cult following, hilarious, scored great everywhere and was arguably the most fun series of games last gen.
Whether you like what you've seen from Haze or not, you cannot deny what Free Radical has done for the FPS industry and their ability to make one helluva First-Person Shooter. They deserve to be on your list just as much as Bungie, Epic or id.

I disagree on several levels. Free Radical did not make GE or PD. Sorry.
The founders of the companies may have worked on those games in some role, but they did not make them.
And this thread is not solely about looking at the past; it is about looking at the future of the genre at what each companies game is doing for it.
Crytek is new, but they have Crysis which looks super awesome.
Id is lacking an ultra-compelling new title (Rage has not shown us much) but they created the genre.
See? Some companies have an legendary past, some companies have an amazing new game, and right now, Free Radical has neither.
Until I get see something great from Haze, I will not be able to add them to the list.
My list in order:
1. Valve
2. ID
3. Bungie
4. Epic
5. Infinity Ward
6. 2k Boston
7. Rare
8. Monolith
9. Crytek
10. Free Radical
I would have to say Nintendo.XenoNinja
I would have to say that was an oxymoron. Just like; Hello kitty is for Adults.
See? Some companies have an legendary past, some companies have an amazing new game, and right now, Free Radical has neither.

Free Radical doesn't has a legendary past? Did you just forget Timesplitters? Timesplitters did a few interesting things and it a success.

It's a good past... but not legendary.
Id's past is legendary.

Are you serious?
Yes, Free Radical did make Goldneneye and Perfect Dark. Funny, you're the first person I've met that has tried to debate this claim. The team that make Perfect Dark and Goldeneye left Rare and formed Free Radical. The team might have made the games while working at a different company, but we're talking about the best devs of our time, and the Free Radical dev team is most certainly one of the best devs of our time.
Free Radical did make Perfect Dark and Goldeneye 007. :s
And just because you don't like Haze doesn't mean they're bad. You haven't even played it! If I say Rage looks like crap, will you take id off the list? Because both FRD and id have amazing resumes. Seriously, your logic makes no sense... "Oh I'll ignore this devs past, and I don't like this game I haven't played yet so I don't consider them one of the best devs of all time" :?
For someone sake, add dice, they have a much better resume then monolith
numba1234
I do not see Dice leading in the bright tomorrow of the FPS genre.

This isn't about the best devs of all time. This is about the future of the genre. I mean, I would like to add them, but I'm not going to based on their past.
The only company that I added based solely on their past was Id, and that was only because they created the genre itself.
Haze does not look like a game that is the bleeding edge future of FPS's; I'm sorry.
As much as I would like to add FR to the list, I can not rationally allow myself to.

Each dev (excluding id) is on that list due to what they are currently doing, and/or will do to carry the genre in the years to come.

Key word there being "did". What will they do now to push the genre forward? How will they make the FPS genre bigger, badder, better, and deeper?

Did you see battle field bad company? It looks amazing. Too bad it is in 2008, or it would have more hype
Its about the future of the genre? 2K Boston: Not working on any announced game. Monolith: Working on Project Origin which we've only seen 1 trailer of? Bungie: Not working on any announced game and have already said their next game will be a new IP. (I'm pretty sure thats what they said.)
Kind of hard to say that these are the devs that will be making the premire FPS games this gen when we have that kind of info on their future games.
Also, I'd say "The best FPS devs of our time" kind of implies the past/present. We can't say for certain they'll still be the best in the future.

Fair enough. It really more is about the present (this past 6 months or so) and the future, but my choices still stand.
2k Boston is pretty much confirmed to be working on Bioshock 2, and Bungie shipped Halo 3 just 16 days ago, so...
He may be forgettnig that battle field bad company is completely non linear, everything is destructable, and it looks amazing. Also it is the first sandbox fps. But heck, this developer is not raising the bar in gameplay, bungie is, with their linear, mission based games. Its about the future of the genre? 2K Boston: Not working on any announced game. First things first, this list is not meant to classify the greatest FPS devs of all time, this is merely a list pointing out the proven FPS devs that are shaping the genre today, and will likely continue to be, and or become, the genre's leaders over the next few years.
2K Boston (Formerly known as Irrational Games):
2K Boston, AKA Irrational, is a great dev responsible for several awesome FPS's over the years like the legendary System Shock 2, SWAT 4, and the surreal Bioshock.
Upcoming games to look out for: Bioshock 2 (TBA)
Monolith Productions:
Monolith is a kickass studio, responsible for amazing games like No One Lives Forvever , No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.S. Way and F.E.A.R.
Upcoming games to look out for: Project Origin: This FPS is a sequel to the awesome F.E.A.R., and alreadly looks super. (2008)
Valve:
Half-life 1 and 2, CS, and TFC. Need I say more?
Upcoming games to look out for: The Orange Box: Best. Value. Ever. (October 10th 2007
Infinity Ward:
Call of Duty 1 and Call of Duty 2; these guys are experts at creating intense nail biting FPS action.
Upcoming games to look at for: Call of Duty 4: ... which is looking incredible, BTW. (November 5th, 2007 )
Bungie:
The Marathon Series, and the Halo series. This is a proven dev with tons of commercial and critical success and a big handful of hits under their belt.
Upcoming games to look out for: Probably nothing for a while. Go try Halo 3, it's out right now.
Epic:
Unreal Tournament, Unreal Championship, and Gears of War. These guys are insane.
Upcoming games to look out for: Unreal Tournament 3 (late 07 for PS3 and PC, early 08 for 360)
Crytek:
Far Cry. Though Crytek may only have one game under their belts, it was certainly awesome, and Crysis looks to be just as good, with open gameplay and the best graphics in a video game to date.
Upcoming games to look out for: Crysis ( November 16th 2007)
id:
These guys started the FPS genre (insert mad props here) and they are still going incredibly strong.
Games to look out for: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (That's out now, right?) and Rage (TBA)
These are the guys that will be deciding the fate of the genre in the years to come, and regardless of where the System Wars lead us you will pretty much always be able to count on quality FPS action as long as at least one of them is around.
Three cheers for the shakers and movers of the best genre in gaming!
May we enjoy much more FPS awesomeness in the years to come. :D
