Porn.
Hmm... I think you might be onto something...
But honestly, the best part for me is building the system up itself. Makes for a good weekend project every other year or so.
Versatility and games mainly...but never in competition with consoles.
I laughed at "cheaper on the long run"...myths are hard to overcome!!!
it's a fact , not a myth. PC Gaming is really cheaper on the long run in terms of quality and quantity since the cost of yearly upgrades will reduce to zero eventually , and that's besides cheaper online gaming services

No it's not...
Since 2000, i have spent more than 10k$ in hardware upgrade only on pc/laptops!!!
Nowhere near what i spent on all my consoles hardware...So stop with the myths.
Spending 50$ a year for 1000++$ worth of software is a bargain by my standards, but you can look at it otherwise.
And no new software is not that much cheaper on pc even if it's digital only, and the consoles also have now the summer sales like pc.
So yes, these are myths!!!

But we are not comparing this purely by hardware standards? If you're spending more on hardware on PC, you are getting better performance... (In this gen)
Also, why are you including laptops?
@tushar172787
Yes it's true, but it's just to show that the cheap on the long run thing is a total bs...
If you want to keep up with the pc performance levels, there's no way in hell that it will cost you less than consoles/softs combined.
I added laptop because it happens that i have a gaming one since 2k, bought 3 new ones since and upgraded my rigs every 2 years or so.
So, even if you take into account the soft price, playing on pc is more expensive, if you are going after what pc is meant for : performance!!!
Edit : that why i always consider price/perf ratio more important than perf alone, and in this regard consoles have the lead.
The diverse range of quality games available on PC and strong communities are what primarily draw me to PC gaming. I love how games like The Stanley Parable exist (one of my favourite games) and how I can easily find multiplayer games for titles released over a decade ago. Backwards compatibility, modding, cheap games, PC customisation (both software and hardware) and the open platform nature of PC is also amazing.

Have you seen steam sales ? Seriously consoles are not even close to PC when it comes to cheap games .... Games on PC tend to have price drops faster and more significant as well.
Well I'm not really into PC gaming per se (don't have many games on it yet) but I did build my own gaming PC so that's my vote.
mhm... sure you were.
If you were half as smart as you claim you are, you might have considered the person I addressed knew I was joking, since he didn't flame me for what I said.
Maybe peripheral though just isn't your thing? Stick to reactionary passion.
For me, as an ex-PC gamer, I would say the thing I miss the most is the higher frequency of well-written, darker themed titles.

You can find plenty of games around the 5$ mark, got recently the whole mass effect trilogy for less than 12$...and you have the used ones too.
The question is, how much does cost a new game digital??? One may think it's for cheap and it's certainly not!!!

Let's see, some games I've bought over the last year
Mad Max, 2 days after release - £13
GTA V, pre-ordered - £24
Assassin's Creed Syndicate 2 weeks after release - £14 (it was cheaper on release day at £13)
Fallout 4, pre-ordered - £22
Batman Arkham Knight with full premium contents, pre-ordered - £24 (yeah, I'm a mug)
Might and Magic VII, 1 week after release - £20
I could go on but I'm sure you get the picture.
Anyone who thinks Steam sales are the only place to get cheap PC games really needs to learn how to use google.
Edit: Just had a look and I can get Tomb Raider pre-order for £20
@mjorh:
@sovkhan: As i said, it drops faster.
That's why mass effect is 20 bucks at steam instead of 5 on the psn :p
Witcher WH 60 bucks steam, 34 on the psn.../myths i told ya :p
It's not just steam , we have websites like G2A ... @GarGx1 summed it up pretty much.
The unique games you don't find on console.
Which is why everyone should have a PC to compliment their console.
@sovkhan

Yes it's true, but it's just to show that the cheap on the long run thing is a total bs...
I am trying to compare console to PC standards here.. I am not comparing ultra high end PCs.
If you want to keep up with the pc performance levels, there's no way in hell that it will cost you less than consoles/softs combined.
A PC isn't just for running better versions of multiplats, it's also useful for running loads of PC exclusives/emulators/last-gen games, mods etc. Personally, me (and probably loads of real world PC gamers) would do just that, and are ok at playing with slightly better than/worse than console settings/power.
I added laptop because it happens that i have a gaming one since 2k, bought 3 new ones since and upgraded my rigs every 2 years or so.
And how does this fit into the discussion of Console vs PC price?
So, even if you take into account the soft price, playing on pc is more expensive, if you are going after what pc is meant for : performance!!!
Why should I get a PC for more performance? Couldn't I get it for the games, features mods, sales, etc?
Edit : that why i always consider price/perf ratio more important than perf alone, and in this regard consoles have the lead.
No they don't.. lol
The initial cost of a PC will be slightly higher, but you will save in the long run due to peripherals, game prices, and the fact that you can do general computing + gaming on it, makes it have higher value for money.

let make it clear...
Ps3 600$ + psn (50$X5) = 250$ : total 850$ for 10 years + games ranging from 60 to 5$ + ( 72 games a year thx to psn++ )
You can save you some money by reselling your new games.
pc : 1000$ ( smallest entry point ) + 400$ upgrade every two years = 3000$ games ranging from 60$ to 5$.
You can easily multiply by two or three, if you wanna be a graphic whore, last cpu's are 1000$ and last gpus are the same. And if you are a globe trotter a gaming laptop is a must, so you can add 1000$ every two, three years...
I'm no graphic whore and in the span of 10 years, i spend ten times more money on my pc hardware than one console, i let you imagine the price paid by a guy running after cutting edge tech!!!
Now, for the majority of people, the pc advantage in graphics is irrelevant due to the entry point, maintenance and know how.
So, there's no way in hell that pc is less expensive in the long run/period.
I'm not a huge PC gamer, having only a modest laptop at the moment, but the fact that you can buy a years worth of high quality games for peanuts is the most appealing aspect to me. I have roughly 30 games in my Steam library and have spent less than $100 all together.
That's how I feel bro, and I'm like you, a lowly laptop PC gamer. Even though we play games on PC, we aren't part of the mustard race because we don't own 'spensive hardware that we built from grains of sand or hook the machine to our veins. Hermits don't like us any more than they do the bottom feeding consolites. :(
@sovkhan:
let make it clear...
First of all, I was clearly comparing PC vs console cost this gen. But since you already started this argument...
Ps3 600$ + psn (50$X5) = 250$ : total 850$ for 10 years + games ranging from 60 to 5$ + ( 72 games a year thx to psn++ )
PS+ didn't even launch when the PS3 launched, it came out in 2010, and for the most of first year, it offered only one game for free. After that, 1-2 game pattern was followed, so where did you get your "72 games a year" assumption? Also, 1) You do not have choice in the games, so you probably wont like most of the games, 2) PS+ in the beginning, had a worse game selection than now, and 3) you coúldn't actually keep the games. PSN sales also used to have the same situation back in the day, without many worthwhile sales, so you were stuck with physical.
This is, of course completely ignoring the fact that the PS3 had an exclusive drought in the early years, playing multiplats at sub-HD, worse optimization, PSN crashes etc. However, it had full BC for PS1/PS2 titles, which puts it in competition with PC. (Of course, PC had BC for many more consoles) and blu-ray,
So: PS3-$600, PS+ ($50x3) $150 (around total 50 games for the gen), Hard Drive (optional, if you want to keep PS+ games) and games at close to full price due to physical disks, Blu-ray.
.You can save you some money by reselling your new games
And you can save even more money by selling PC components.
pc : 1000$ ( smallest entry point ) + 400$ upgrade every two years = 3000$ games ranging from 60$ to 5$.
lol wut? For $1000, you could easily build a great PC that would run games much better than the PS3. For $700, you could build a mid range PC which would beat the PS3 for 4 years (After which the card will be outdated due to DX11). Also, why I should upgrade for $400 every two years for better than console performance? At close to the end of the life cycle, I could get a GTX 660/i3 sandy bridge/H61 Mobo/4 GB ram for $420 + a 500GB to get on Par with PS4. Plus massively cheaper games due to digital distribution, many more exclusives, better multiplats, cheaper peripherals + it can be used for general computing.
So: PC-$800 + $450 upgrade after 4-5 years to keep up with next-gen consoles, and half price games, cheaper peripherals, etc.
You can easily multiply by two or three, if you wanna be a graphic whore, last cpu's are 1000$ and last gpus are the same.
So what's your point? $1000 CPU and $1000 GPU exist today also, why should I get them? They're complete overkill and a waste of money..
And if you are a globe trotter a gaming laptop is a must, so you can add 1000$ every two, three years...
And, this still doesn't fit into the discussion. We are comparing PC vs console cost of same power. But of course, if you are a globe trotter, that is another advantage for laptop gaming.
I'm no graphic whore and in the span of 10 years, i spend ten times more money on my pc hardware than one console, i let you imagine the price paid by a guy running after cutting edge tech!!!
Lolno, PC doesn't cost anywhere that much if you’re looking for equivalent performance/decently better performance than a PS4. Again, why should I buy 4x titan sli, 5960x CPU? Why Wouldn’t I be fine with an i3/GTX 750Ti/R9 270x?
Now, for the majority of people, the pc advantage in graphics is irrelevant due to the entry point, maintenance and know how.
Completely off-topic. btw, if you don’t care about graphics, then you might as well game on a pre-built PC or Mobile. You wont buy a console because it’s entry point is too high, and you know how to use it better than your PC/handheld/Smartphone.
So, there's no way in hell that PC is less expensive in the long run than console , without having better graphics, period.
In conclusion, fixed that for you.

PC gaming is first and foremost for gaming, just like any other platform.
You haven't disproved my points yet...
Nice deflection though!
The best thing about PC is not a single thing of these options but all of them combined. That's the sweet thing about PC gaming, you don't have to choose because you can have them all.

You're arguing with a troll, did you really expect him to refute anything you said?
it's a fact , not a myth. PC Gaming is really cheaper on the long run in terms of quality and quantity since the cost of yearly upgrades will reduce to zero eventually , and that's besides cheaper online gaming services
No it's not...
Since 2000, i have spent more than 10k$ in hardware upgrade only on pc/laptops!!!3

The question is, how much does cost a new game digital??? One may think it's for cheap and it's certainly not!!!
Bandai Namco games sell $10 cheaper on Steam than on console.
The two most recent Bamco games released Tales of Zestiria and Saint Seiya Soldiers Souls are both $49.99 on Steam and at the Playstation Store both are $59.99 for the PS4. - SSSS , ToZ
This holds true for the like of Dark Souls 2 as another example. $49.99 for the original and $29.99 for the upgrade to SotFS. Both versions for the PS3 + PS4 are at $59.99 original price for a total of $120 versus only $80 for PC. - DS2 , SotfS /
Another example of this is 2015's Game of the Year The Witcher 3 was cheaper on the PC for players that previously owned W1 + W2, $47.99. - W3 PS / W3 PC
I probably could go on but when an entire publishing company sells their games cheaper new on the PC than consoles, there really is no point especially when PC saved $40 on only one specific game while console player had to have bought two consoles to play both Dark Souls 2 versions new.
Four different games, 2 versions of 1 game, $227.95 cost for PC and $299.95 for PS3/PS4. That is over a $70 saving on only 5 brand new games!
*For PC sources just check Steam.
