I find it very hard to find a game these days that pulls me into the story in the same way that a good book/movie/tv show does. I'm not sure if it's because i'm getting more jaded with the industry or they just aren't trying as hard anymore. I found Red Dead dull and bland(horrible person i know) Alan Wake/Dragon Age 2 and a couple of others i've tried recently just didn't impress me with it's story compared to the way one some of the more classic games did.

Anyways, my moaning is not the point of this thread. Two question.

Out of EVERY game you've ever played, what story hooked you the most? One that kept you coming back. One that you coulden't wait to get home from school/work so you could find out what happened next?

Second question. Same as above, but for THIS gen only.

Uncharted 2 had the best SP story for keeping me interested and wanting to move forward. Best story is a bit more difficult.

Probably FFX or KH. I played FFX for about 5 hours a day and loved nearly every minute of it This gen, I guess Lost Odyssey. To be honest, I just didn't find any games with top-notch stories.

The Professor Layton games all had stories that were full of twists and turn. As well as being mature without needing guns and sex

Silent Hill 2 story really was epic. I still wonder what happened to James.

I'm going to go with MGS4 for best story this gen. Sure, it had it's problems, but i've been playing as Snake since the NES days, and that final battle with Ocelot...man, i had serious goosebumps.

Bioshock 2 would be up there.

Biggest let down had to be Fallout 3. Loved the game, felt the main story could have been so much better.

beganoo

OMG Soul Reaver was the best.

the writer for that is also the writer for Uncharted. :)

Heavy Rain was amazing as well.

i don't normally like RPG stories. they bombard you with hundreds of characters and hundreds of backstories. it's just an excuse to say RPGs have a good story. i mean, i could come up with dozens of characters as well.

Soul Reaver, Heavy Rain, Max Payne 1, etc. all shine for me and it's because you don't need to know alot of characters. there were like less than 10 characters in these games and yet their stories are amazing.

for me that's what makes a video game story good. you take a handful of characters and tell a realyl good story instead of shoving hundreds of characters with hundreds of personalities and backstories. i mean, sure, it makes the universe unique. but that doesn't mean it's always going to be good.

I love the characters/setting/world of FF7, but i felt like the story left too many important things vague to say it has the best story. It's prob my fave FF, but i think the stories for 9 and 10 were much better written.

I thought Indigo Prophecy was pretty engrossing even though the story wasn't good at all(it was pretty bad), but it made me continue playing just to see the crazy stuff that would happen.

Majora's Mask. The main story itself was interesting, but what set it apart from the rest is the individual character stories.

Silent Hill 2 has the best story of all the games I've ever played. For this gen, I'd go with Nier.

Slashkice

Neir is a good pick, very underrated.

Great sound as well.

Just the story, Red Dead Redemption. It captured the themes of old 60's Western movies very well. The Witcher also has deep plot, but its presentation leaves a lot to be desired. However, great characters and dialogues are enough to make games engrossing in narrative-wise, in my opinion. This category includes games such as GTA4, Mass Effect, etc.

Well recently I would have to say Amnesia: The Dark Descent. know people didn't pay attention to the story but I'm probably one of the few that read every note in the game and focused on every dialogue.:P The story is like the movie Memento meets the Shining.

Metal Gear Solid. Yes it needed an editor, yes it had too many cutscenes and was overly convoluted. But goddamn it kept me guessing and coming back for more right until the very end.

Ever17 (visual novel).

I had to read through all 5 endings to get the true ending, and during that week I just kept reading and reading without (using ctrl to) skip texts.

Symphonic rain is up there as well (music game & visual novel)

This gen.... Haruka ni Aogi, Uruwashi no main school route (this visual novel has 2 writers working separately on different routes.), baldr sky dive, full metal daemon murashma

All time: FFX

This Gen: MGS4...heavy rain minus the plothole, and Mass Effect 1 (How anyone can consider ME2's story to be better is beyond me, but it is a better game overall).

Well visual novels are a sub genre of the Adventure genre so they should count.
