Sixaxis and Viva Piñata were failed attempts to capture our consumer, says Harrison

Sony's Sixaxis controller and Viva Piñata for Xbox 360 are both failed attempts to capture the traditional Nintendo customer, according to NoA boss George Harrison.

He believes that the two rival companies lack the "DNA" to understand a market that wants more from a gaming experience than just the next version of Halo or Grand Theft Auto.

"So far they haven't spent a lot of time focused on us. Now that we're having some success, they probably will," commented Harrison to Wired.

"We can already see some of the things they've tried. For last year's E3, at the last minute, Sony rushed out their Sixaxis controller as an effort to respond to the Wii remote. We saw Microsoft roll out Viva Piñata as their killer app for the Pokemon set. And neither of those worked really well.

"Part of this is, I think it's not in their DNA. They're really good at reaching a certain customer, and have a real difficulty understanding how we succeed with the customers that we have," said the senior vice president of marketing and communications.

With the sales of Wii and DS hardware crushing the competition in the US, Harrison is confident that Nintendo could take up to as much as 50 per cent of the market for this latest 'next-gen' cycle.

"We also have a belief that we can be, of this lifecycle, 40-45 per cent of the hardware that's being sold. But on the other hand, we could get over 50 per cent. And a lot of that depends on what our competitors do," he stated.

"If they only focus on the Grand Theft Autos and the Halos and things of that nature, they're focusing on a very tiny part of the market. The overall market is growing so dramatically that they're going to miss out on the opportunities that we're seeing in the expanded audience," he said.

I agree with that statement made by Nintendo.  However, despite it's failure to capture the market, VP is a great game.  Truly.

And here I thought it would take at least another win or two before the arrogance took over again!

Yeah it didnt take long. But I think Nintendo has the right to show off. They have been right since the begining and people have been constantly laughing at them. And George is right anyways...

I think that until this arrogance turns into bullying third parties and consumers, it doesn't really matter.  If anything, this is nintendo's way of begging third parties for support.  I could care less how they treat ms and sony

I was hoping Nintendo would lay low on the arrogance, while sales continued moving and alot more great great gaming titles began surfacing--leaving it all as a self-explanatory strategy. I guess it was inevitable.

I agree. Though I think the Sixaxis has more potential; it sucks right now but they're going to include rumble at a much more different immersion than before. Motion sensing needs force feedback.

i agree with u. i dont have a wii, but i had an outing with one of m friends, and of course in his house his parents and some of their friends were playing a wii. the thing is that all they were playing was wii sports. after a while, the non-gaming community will get tired of the wii and the 360 or ps3 will overtake "the big N".

and just to clarify, i'm not saying all this cos i'm bitter, its just one of my predictions.

it almost cost them everything.  it cost them their market position is perennial leader and a bunch of important allies, as they all joined Sony.

Irony.

 next version of Mario? Metroid? Crappy Sonic games? Nintendo, I wouldn't even start to talk about "next-versions" hell, Wii isn't even the next version, it's a minorly amped up gamecube with a motion sensing controller. (Not trolling, just stating my views on the Wii)

Nintendo finally shows their arrogance because after the first few months their console is doing well.. let's see how this plays out in the long haul shall we?

Honestly, I could care less.

Pokemon is clearly irrelevant to me, personally. Obviously, Nintendo has captured an untapped market who are "scared" to touch the Halos or GTAs, etc. Pokemons and other cutesy games are usually big hits on Nintendo consoles, I'm not surprise. Nintendo published games or 1st party games are usually big hitters. Especially among parents and kids.

Now all we need is for Peter Moore to say something like "Nintendo makes games for 7 year old girls and grandmas" and then to laugh at the PS3 so we can get an all out s***storm between those 3. I want to see some new age "Sega's got what Nintendon't".

Viva pinata is nothing like Pokemon.

Nintendo might have a big lead in sales. But all the games that wil have ground breaking advances this gen will come from PC xbox 360 and PS3.

There is only so much waggle can do.

Power is needed for advancement in AI and physics too. Not just graphics.

Viva Pinata failed? Name one third-party Nintendo game that has a higher average score than Viva Pinata.

Viva Pinata is produced by Microsoft...it was, in fact, created by Rare. Is this idiot insulting Rare? Perfect Dark? Goldeneye? Banjo Kazooie? Conker's Bad Fur Day? Yes, there was an age when Rare was producing 4 of the best-reviewed and best-recieved pieces of software on Nintendo platforms, but now that they're not, their "DNA" is messed up.

Maybe this guy can continue to shoot his mouth off when his platform gets a decent third-party game. Until then, let Shigeu Miyamoto and Miyamoto alone be the representative of the Nintendo platform, because he's the only guy keeping their franchise afloat. If it weren't for Zelda and Mario, he wouldn't have a business in the first place.

Plus, the audacity of claiming 50% of the market when he doesn't claim 50% of the market NOW is fairly ridiculous. Yes, you're getting great sales. But you'll never achieve on your aspirations if you don't meet demand....I would have bought a Wii...if I could have found one. A DS too. I guess you'll learn someday. At any rate, you can't predict the future, so why try?

He is not only insulting Microsoft and Sony (who, many would argue got it correct last generation, and many would argue Microsoft is in a moment of silent lucidity this generation), he is insulting Capcom, Insomniac, Rare, Infinity Ward, Bungie, Rockstar, Naughty Dog, Epic Games....in fact, he's insulting every game developer that ever attempted to make a technically astounding, traditional game. That's why he's a dingleberry and he should shut the hell up.

He is no game developer. He's a marketing rep. Let him spout his mouth, but he's no better than the marketing people for Sony you all apparently despise.

At E3 this year when Sony and M$ show off a mountain of games while Nintendo just sits their stroking their Wiimotes we will see who "lacks DNA".miss_kitt3n
Aren't your jumping to Conclusions you think that Nintendo will have no games to show at E3 but I think they will have alot of games, and they would have more games at E for All.

Sixaxis and Viva Piñata were failed attempts to capture our consumer, says Harrison

[QUOTE=""]Sony's Sixaxis controller and Viva Piñata for Xbox 360 are both failed attempts to capture the traditional Nintendo customer, according to NoA boss George Harrison.

The overall market is growing so dramatically that they're going to miss out on the opportunities that we're seeing in the expanded audience," he said.

when they speak of Viva Pinata what consumer are they speaking about? children? and if so, does this confirm that the Wii is a kiddy system or not?

proud owner of Viva Pinata. ;)

Well...nobody can deny that Nintendo's primary audience is several years younger than Microsoft's or Sony's.

Viva pinata is nothing like Pokemon.

Nintendo might have a big lead in sales. But all the games that wil have ground breaking advances this gen will come from PC xbox 360 and PS3 games.

There is only so much waggle can do.

Power is needed for advancement in AI and physics too. Not just graphics.

I tend to agree.  But don't sleep on Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros.

he meant non-gamers

like your mom, sister, girl, etc...

actually, it seems like the wii is reaching more mature gamers than both PS3 and 360 are reaching

middle aged women at work are talking about this thing - nintendo has reached a new market that sony/MS just can't reach with their hardcore-gamer consoles
