Poll The Elder Scrolls 6 or Final Fantasy 16 - which game are you more hyped for? (118 votes)

Elder Scrolls 6 71%
Final Fantasy 16 29%

It been over 2 years since Elder Scrolls 6 was announced..There hasn't been much revealed since then. FF16 was just announced and the trailer looked fantastic. Seems like a game that isn't far away. It's been almost 10 years since Skyrim came out. Can't say I'm that excited but I'll definitely check out TES 6 when the time comes. But for now, it's FF16 for me. What about you, SW? The Elder Scrolls 6 or Final Fantasy 16 - which game are you more hyped for?

Interested in both, but leaning towards ES6.

If FF16 drops the stupid "go take photo for Hurley from lost" or "go find gem for guy with ridiculously stereotypical Brooklin accent" quests, then that may change things.

I think an open world FF with side quests on the level of Witcher 3 would be amazing.

@SecretPolice: More than double prefers ES6. The attempt to damage control the Bethesda purchase has failed.

@Pedro:

Indeed, not only failed but he cast a glaring light just how important the MS, Beth, acquisition was.

Surely not his intent. lol

Oh, and I know...

lol :P

Well, Elder scrolls hasn't done anything in years. Almost 8 years since Skyrim.

Skyrim came out 11/11/2011. I will always remember that date haha. Clever marketing.

FF has been doing great in recent years: FF14 Stormblood, FF14 Shadowbringers, and FF7 Remake. These games are definitely better than Skyrim.

The greatest release date ever was for both the Dreamcast and FF8:

9/9/99

It was clever marketing on two levels:

  • It was a memorable launch date for the Dreamcast.
  • Sony stole some of Sega's thunder by having FF8 released the same day on the PS1.

That's a good one too. I didn't realize FF8 came out on the same day. Loved those Dreamcast commercials.

Wait wait wait...what part of F16 looked fantastic? Outdated ps3-level graphics or a super generic fantasy setting?

The combat looks impressive, with shades of Devil May Cry. The combat design is being handled by ex-Capcom developer Ryota Suzuki, known for DMC5 and Dragon's Dogma.

The plot also looks promising, with shades of Berserk. The game is being developed by the team behind FF14 Shadowbringers, which has one of the most well-written RPG storylines in recent years.

The graphics look PS4 level, not PS3 level. The graphics look comparable to FF15 and FF7R on the PS4. PS3 level would be FF13, not FF15 or FF7R. But I'll give you the generic fantasy setting. I've never really been a fan of generic medieval fantasy settings, so it's a bit disappointing FF16 went with a setting like that.

Sometimes I think some people here buy games to just stare at pixels then actually enjoy the gameplay lol.

This is System Wars. Of course pixel-counting is more important than gameplay here.

But well, the graphics are a bit disappointing. Each mainline (offline) FF game is always known for being a step-up in graphics. There was a jump from FF13, to FF15, to FF7R. But with FF16, there's no graphical jump. It doesn't look any better than FF7R.

However, the gameplay and story look promising. And ultimately, that's what counts. FF16 is looking like a mixture of FF14 (one of the best RPGs in recent years) meets Devil May Cry (one of the GOAT action game franchises).

I don't know, I thought FF7R looked great, and this game looks great too. But I guess that's just me!

FF16 looks great by PS4 standards, on-par with FF7R. But it doesn't look like a PS5 game. However, the same could be said for most of the next-gen games revealed so far. They look like upscaled current-gen games.

Just wishful thinking, but it is possible that they're targeting performance over visuals on this one. Would make sense for the kind of combat they seem to be going for.

And while YT vids aren't exactly evidence, there is a 60fps version of the trailer.

@SolidGame_basic:

Strictly talking what little we've seen of the combat, yeah kinda. I don't expect this game to scratch the surface on DMC depth, but general look and feel, yeah the influence is obvious.

Wasn't at all surprised to read Suzuki was on board after seeing the trailer.

One of the main reasons this game has my interest, could potentially be a contender for best ARPG. At the very least, combat is guaranteed to mop the floor with anything Bethesda puts out, though that's not saying much.

Once I get around to getting a console, Final Fantasy 16 for sure. I think it's just due to the fact that I'm a fan of the games in general plus I play most of them with my sister, so it's nice. No one in my small circle of friends is really into the games.

As a franchise, Final Fantasy is the world's largest RPG after Pokemon, has a longer history than TES, and sells a lot more in total. But with Skyrim's huge success, the TES brand is swelling like a bubble. On the other hand, the once stagnant FF brand has been steadily producing results due to the recent commercial success of FF14, technological progress in FF15, and the critical success of FF7R. I'm looking forward to seeing how these very different franchises will show their true value in next-generation games.
