[QUOTE="RobbieH1234"]]Now this is just silly; they design a combat system, then realise it's broken, then change it for the worse, when they could just implement a dodge animation? Vandalvideo
Hahahahaha. Bethesda: If something is broken, smash it into tiny peices and people won't notice it was ever working to begin with.

Its crazy enough to work......sadly enough.

I hope they include some sort of character like M'aiq the Liar that runs around making fun of things. I think patronizing the more overbearing fans is something every developer should do.

Making fun of the people who bought your game is sort of a fun thing to do, yes? I'd enjoy such an antic.

So would I. People that take games too seriously should be lampooned for it.

How will it be a "great Fallout game" if its not at all Fallout? That's like saying Super Mario Galaxy is a great Halo game if you call it "Halo 4". :|

Taking into account all of the evidence presented in this thread that speaks against the idea that it will be a real Fallout game, what alternative argument will you use to reason it?

it will be one of the better Fallout games to see the light of day IMO. to you it's not, but I only care about me to be quite frank and honest :) I've read what you have to offer in counter to this argument but I just don't agree, it's not as if you state facts most of the time anyways.

it will be different, but it will still be Fallout, and it'll be grand :)

and Subrosian, c'mon, you can do better than that weak fallacy based analogy with Halo and Super Mario.

either way, have fun with the thread, have fun not playing. i can only hang around this vitriol and delusion so long :)

i don't consider any of those to be facts that make this game not a fallout game, series evolve, you people like the dark ages of fallout, fair enough :) and tbh most of those items are weak and splitting hairs :) it's quite similar to me thinking all new final fantasy suck **** because they're different, it's my opinion, and yes I could make a list of 'facts' for my argument like you just copy and pasted but it wouldn't mean anything to anyone unless they too think new FF are crap.

like i said, enjoy not playing it, enjoy your crusade against it.

Well like i said before..if this was any other franchise the fans would do the exact same thing...dont isolate Fallout fans like there the only crazy one who would do somthing like this..The fallout fans do have a reasonable arguement aganist fallout 3, now i could care less if you do or do not want to play this game..just dont act like this is the only people who act like this..if Final fantasy was an FPS or racer they would do the exact same thing..

While i do agree that some people can be a little overboard calling beth "stupid" or "crapesda" i do agree that this game HAS taken a turn for the worst..and its clearly visible to anybody who has played F1 and F2, hell many people point out things that dont even make sense not by a game standpoint but by a real life standpoint...

All in all console fanboys dont understand because they have never had a game of there bastardized, until you understand a classic game getting F'ed over than you will understand what Fallout fans feel like..but until now you dont..so you have no right to say somebody is wrong with there statements aganist fallout 3..

i am one of the most hardcore fallout fans out there buddy, so please don't act like all fans are whiners.

i have original copies and boxes of all versions except the POS BOS on original Xbox. i have played and replayed each iteration on PC at least a dozen times, likely more. i even helped work on some fallout mods that never saw the light of day.

i have been gaming for well over 20 years now and i know series evolve, sometimes for the worse, sometimes for the better. but one things for sure, i'm glad as hell this IP is actually getting a new treatment instead of going out on F:BOS on original Xbox. this will be far better.

maybe i'll play it and find I hate it, but one thing I won't do is get caught up in this pre-judging nonsense that you people are doing. it's foolish, a waste of time, and it serves no purpose apart from venting that shouldn't be needed in the first place.

look at Mario, look at Final Fantasy, look at MGS. did people start complaining when these games shifted focus and perspective? when enemies were changed or altered? when snake stopped fighting isometric and went OTS 3rd person? when snake went 3rd/1st person? when characters and allies from different games changed or were slightly altered?

there are people like this that hang around to slag any new iteration of a popular series, you're scorned and poked fun at by the industry as being rabid and unreasonable - because you absolutely are. this thread reminds me of yahtzee's rant on fanboys to the T.

so in closing, I have every right to do everything I've done in this thread. just like you have the right to complain. do I think your complaints are valid or well thought out? no. that's my opinion.

All I see in this topic is nerd rage from hermits who will probalby pirate the hell out of this game anyway. No one cares what you hermits think anymore. On a side note, UK developers have decided to go after 25000 of you hermits for copying their games. It starts off with a 300 pound fine, don't pay that and things get bad for you.

Before you harp on about dumbing down games maybe you should actually pay for them

_NickD_

Considering that the PC is the most popular gaming platform in the world that has the most game developers working on games on it, I am pretty sure many of them care what PC gamers think. Bethesda obviously doesn't because their new fanbase will just take rainbow coloured **** and thank them for it. And that's much easier than pleasing the already established fans.

I am a PC gamer and I buy all my games. I am guessing there are quite a few others out there who do as well considering Crysis sold 3 million copies... more so than most popular console games.

Very well written TC, I've never played a Fallout game but I understand what you're saying.

It's a shame because I love post-apocalyptic stuff, but I think Fallout 3 looks really lame.

rich? one game had other game cameos, and even then they semi fit with the general setting (in other words, no lightsabers).

yeah, spawn really fit in well with his projectile attacks and floating fireball. right ;) it's not as if the sabre cuts people in half, as it should, but all swords in SC should hack limbs off - fighting games don't work that way.

this thread is nuts. hate to say it but some of you people sound like raving lunatics. i cant beleive some people are so vehemently against this game. especially since its not out and as far as i know they havent played it. never played the original but i just downloaded it from gametap to see if its really that good. im sure i,ll like it but i see nothing wrong with fallout 3. just looks like a fun game. and apparently you guys know more about game design than the "idiots" at bethesda, who purposely pooped on your beloved game franchise. man guys lighten up a little.

This thread is just... absurd. Maybe I could understand if Fallout 3 looked like complete and utter garbage, but it doesn't. It looks like a pretty decent game. No, it's not made by the same developer and it doesn't stay completely true to the series, but that doesn't warrant all this kicking and screaming.

I'm really still wondering what's up with the money system though.. that preview specifically mentions a quarter, when we know the game uses bottle caps. I'm wondering if some of the previews are just people interpreting or taking guesses at some things they caught glimpses of.

How exactly is that supposed to define you as a "hardcore Fallout fan?" I, for example, have done the same thing for many games I've disliked--Oft times because I felt I had to fix up the game to actually play through it. And if it all boils down to how often you play it, I can honestly say I counted at least 300 play-throughs of Fallout and around 400 for Fallout 2. The disparity between our play-records here is staggering and yet I'm still not sure if it would actually define any of us as "hardcore Fallout fans."

When people say that it seems more like they're trying to buy credibility in an argument than make a point. Pete Hines, for example has been spewing the same line repeatedly in response to critics and he still hasn't acknowledged the fact that multiple members of the game's dev team have admitted that they haven't even finished the first game.

I, myself, have never felt the need to say such a thing when I criticize what Bethesda is doing, so I'm rather confused by everyone else's need to say it.

look at Mario, look at Final Fantasy, look at MGS. did people start complaining when these games shifted focus and perspective? when enemies were changed or altered? when snake stopped fighting isometric and went OTS 3rd person? when snake went 3rd/1st person? when characters and allies from different games changed or were slightly altered?3picuri3

Making the switch from 2D to 3D, updating enemies, or changing player perspective is not always the same as changing the nature of the gameplay. Metal Gear has always been dependent on sneaking elements, which hasn't changed. Mario isn't Viewtiful Joe or Paper Mario; it's never been defined by a 2D format. Final Fantasy's format updates haven't really changed the nature of its gameplay

It just so happens that, in the case of Fallout, the change in perspective contributed to the destruction of the RPG elements in the game. The character building aspects and Fallout's immersiveness were co-dependent upon the isometric style.

so in closing, I have every right to do everything I've done in this thread. just like you have the right to complain. do I think your complaints are valid or well thought out? no. that's my opinion.3picuri3

Who's said you don't have the right to do anything?

Gamespot's Hand On with Fallout 3 at LeipZeig

We love that we keep finding so much to explore in Fallout 3, but each visit to its postapocalyptic landscape is never long enough. Luckily the full game is out on October 28, so we only have a little longer than two months to wait to start exploring every nook and cranny.

This seems to be a re-occurring pattern with Bethesda's exposition of the game. Instead of being so strategic with the reporters, it would make more sense just to release a demo. But Bethesda seems determined to keep the game's final product a mystery until they force the consumer to take a blind leap of faith.

MTV Multiplayer Preview

"I chose a different path, a path that left me securing my very own house in Megaton with my very own robot butler. I could get a haircut from this butler. Or I could get amusement. That's what I selected, and he/she/it told me a joke."

"When the battle seemed to be over, I proceeded to the radio station's doors. That's when a Super Mutant Behemoth showed up. This double-tall enemy easily killed me as he rampaged to the front of the building. After I revived from a checkpoint I tried fighting him again. I found a Fat Man mini-nuclear-weapon launcher. I used VATS and aimed for the torso. He survived the awesome shot, barely. And he killed me again."

From a different preview.

"We're very clear about what Fallout is and isn't. It's almost the opposite, which is that we try and be pretty careful about anything new that we're introducing to the world, that it fits with what Fallout is about and what would and would not be there. Sometimes, even in and of itself, Fallout is a bit mixed in that respect, the original game is very gritty and hardcore and there's all these realistic guns, and then there's a UFO and there's an Alien Blaster, like, wait, what? There's nothing like, "Oh, I wish we could do this but it's not right for Fallout," it's too cool and too rich a series and franchise, there's so much stuff that you can do that you don't really have time to worry about the stuff that you can't do...I would consider humour that is prompted by a body part being blown off, I would consider that to be dark." - Pete Hines.

I wouldn't consider that humor at all. But hey, Bethesda knows better.

[QUOTE="leejohnson7"]Frighteningly disapointing. I hope they at least improve some of that tripe. The phone booth shelters are rediculous btw, why didn't people just use those to start with?Makari
I'm really still wondering what's up with the money system though.. that preview specifically mentions a quarter, when we know the game uses bottle caps. I'm wondering if some of the previews are just people interpreting or taking guesses at some things they caught glimpses of.

hmm... possibly, or it may explain why people didn't use them to begin with "huh? All I got is bottle caps and this thing is asking me for a quarter.... damn *boom*"

Funny enough during the demonstration, in the super duper mart I believe, one of besthesdas employees referred to get game as a FPS. Oblivion with guns confirmed?

After reading your thread, I think you like Fallout 2 very very much.
So I understand when you criticize Bethesda for bastardizing this game.

I would have had the same feeling if my favorite game is turned into something

completely different from the original.

The sad thing is that these things happen. And the only words for support that I can give is:
"you should play that game again for the nostalgia of the good old times" 8)

In regards to the recent videos, I like the camera control. It looks like there's a camera angle for every situation. The enviorments are very grimy and delapidated, with little details to flesh them out. VATS looks like a good RPG combat system. There's good lighting, and it seems to really make the atmosphere. I also like the music. The whole world looks a less repetitive (maybe homogenous is a better word) than Oblivion.

But some things definetly don't look good. If that cinematic slow motion camera kicks in for every single VATS shot, without an option to turn it off, we're going to have a problem. The animations for those you talk to appear pretty stiff, evident moreso with mr. burke. Bethesda could help their game by removing some of the cinematic attention from their VATS combat and using it for the character interactions.

About that bomb quest: all you had to do was stand right out in the open, in front of it's admirers, and install it. you don't have to sneak it in during darkness, or create a diversion? they have no problem with an outsider fiddeling with their diety? I mean, it could have been a bit more in depth process than just eating some pills.

Walking near a lake and being attacked by weird crab creatures? Very Oblivion. Running around in an "underground" area then selecting character attributes before being thrust into some "oooh, ahhh, bright lights" - also Oblivion. The latest five videos have been... odd to say the least.

It's like they took Oblivion, stole STALKER's radiation system (the sound effects are identical :| ), blended in some Fallout to the whole thing, and didn't really mix it heavily. So at times it's like "yeah, this feels Fallout" - and at other times it's quite Oblivion (crab thingies, nuclear bomb detonation, lock picking), at times it seems like STALKER or Bioshock (tenpenny tower, the rich people, radiation), and at times it seems Fallout.

-

What's going to make or break the game is maintaining that proper atmosphere the entire game - which you can't really tell from clips (though if they were pulling it off, they should show it, no?). I'll give them props for being able to pick pocket and plant bombs (I was afraid they were going to leave that out) but I'm a bit confused by a zombie wanting a hotel room.

I'm going to pirate this game. If Bethesda did a proper job of keeping to what Fallout was, I'll reward them with a purchase. On the bright side, at least Interplay is making a Fallout MMO, so I know I can look forward to that.

No, it was never an MMO. Interplay, the company behind the original Fallouts is making a Fallout MMO.

Seriously. Stop over-analyzing this game. You're going to ruin it for everyone.

Maybe you should stop clinging to previews and Bethesda's history, and actually see for yourself if you enjoy the game. Sheesh Subrosian it was a good read and all but this thread has gone on for about 20 pages too long.

Gamestar on Fallout 3

The article is in German, but NMA's Blinzler translated it:

This shows clearly that - despite updates to its core - Bethesdas Gamebryo engine is obsolete technology. At least now the textures in the distance no longer look as foggy as they did in Oblivion. And it is to be expected that the hardware-requirements won't be out of this world - good news for RPGamers with older systems.
That the PC version of Fallout 3 will be tuned to the abilities of modern graphics cards - is not to be expected. The version we saw at the Games Convention was according to Bethesda employees almost finished. We don't expect therefore that the graphics of the PC version will undergo any changes until the release date of October 31, 2008.
Back on our hill, which impressively proved with it's surrounding view that one of the central of the Fallout series is still very much alive - the freedom to act as you please. Though while the overview map clearly depicts our first target we very much have the freedom to go where we want. So of course we turn our back on the suggested target and go the other way into the hostile world.
(...)
This conglomeration of enemies ranging from the pitiful to the pitiless is already well known to fans of the series, as are the tough Super Mutants, Enclave Soldiers and Sentrybots you'll meet later on in the game. Occasionally Fallout 3 adds some new creation into the Mix, e.g. the above mentioned Yao Guai or the pendant to the known "Mr.Handy" bot - called "Mr.Gutsy".
We meet one of these hovering spheres in our exploration - and are greeted with plasma rays and a flamethrower.
(...)
Additionally the quest in Megaton impressively show that Fallout 3 once again offers a wide variety of solutions to a given situation. To get information about your father from the slick Moriarity you can work for him (collect money from people who loaned some), bribe him, sneak into his office and hack into his computer or sweet talk the prostitute Nora to give you the password. Of course you can just off the guy as well - evil actions are just acceptable to the game as good ones and they have consequences - in Megaton Murderers and Thiefs quickly get in trouble. This of course isn't going to matter much to those without scruple, since it's a town that's just waiting to have it's bomb set off.

Final Thought
Christian Schmidt
The game is finished, I was told, now all that remains is polishing. The test play played without glitches.
Even though I saw potential game play issues, the Fallout fan inside me is giddy like a little kid. The only worry I have: Will the motivation hold on? Even now it's visible that this bleak world will have repetitive and long winded moments. My hope is - the quest will make this worthwhile.
Potential: Very Good

That's some perfect logic right there.

"Hey Bethesda, guess what. I hate you. But since you're probably going to make a worthwhile game despite my rabid fanboyism, I will download a pirated copy instead of simply boycotting a legal purchase like I should do if I'm pissed off. Did I mention I hate you? Your new game sucks. Ok then. Bye bye now."

This is nothing but a poor excuse. If you're not gonna going to buy it, then why are you going to waste your time downloading it?

Just because the game isn't the way you want it to be doesn't give you the right to steal.

Agreed, that's the absolutely least mature way to approach this. You have absolutely no right to a product you haven't purchased. Don't like the direction of Fallout 3? Don't play it - that simple. Want to play through the game and see how it is without buying it? Rent it on the 360 / PS3 - Bethesda doesn't financially benefit from that, and you can experience the game.

However theft just puts yourself on a far lower level. You certainly can't stand on the moral high ground and say "how could you do _________ Bethesda?" if you steal their game.

If you can tolerate the extremely outdated visuals and isometric gameplay then it's worth looking around for them. Both Fallout games have been around for about a decade. They should run on XP if I was able to get them running good on Vista.

There's a site called gog.com, a digital distribution site in which they sell a lot of cl4ssic PC games for a very cheap price. FO 1 and 2 are on the site. Right now the site is undergoing maitenance.
