Remember when handheld games used to be about fun? Before Pokemon games were milked like crazy? Yeah i'm sure you were there.

Pokemon Blue/red/yellow, Golden sun 1/2, Tactics ogre: Knights of Lodis, Metroid fusion/Zero mission, Fire Emblem, Minish cap, Castlevania:CoM/AoS and to a lesser extent HoD, etc, etc.

These days handheld gamers are turning to piracy much faster, why? Perhaps it's because handhelds are being overshadowed by Consoles and gamers feel that the games aren't worth buying, or maybe it's because they feel that the cost of full games for handhelds are too much.

Either way, handheld gaming just won't be the what it was in the past. When people actually bought games like pokemon, gathered at one place and played against each other with link cables or bragged about how they beat dullahan in Golden sun 2.

I'll miss you dearly, Gameboy color and advance.

I think handheld games are on the rise again. We're seeing longer and more in depth games for the most part and developers are achieving some pretty nice visuals.

Yes, but that's what consoles are doing, and better. I don't want console type of games being made for handhelds.

Console games are becoming meh for me and some NSMB lasted longer for me than many console games this gen. We're going to see a shift in the gaming industry where the only gaming devices are going to be handhelds, mobiles, and PCs. When it will happen I don't know, but the need to a home console is on the downslide and I'm not going to complain.

agreed...

But I also agree with the guy a few posts above this...its not just just handheld gaming...its just the "golden age of gaming" is over...

even the "best" games this gen havnt been good...look at GTA 4, may be technically good...but the game is boring as hell, San Andreas was better...

I really like handheld RPGs. It so much easier to find the time to play and beat them. It one of the reasons I am loving all these remakes coming out. I disagree I play my PSP and my DS more than I ever played my GBA.

Nostalgia is sometimes a double edged sword.

I have a soft spot for handheld gaming, and like all my handhelds, and have fond memories, but in all honesty this is my favourite hand held generation.

Just being able to dook it out wirelessly with a bunch of friends in a lecture, playing a variety of different games you wouldent dream of being on a hand held system is fantastic.

Exactly. Sometimes you remember things being better than originally were, and sometimes things just don't have as much impact the second time around. It's not that the gaming golden age is over, it's that you've grown older.

I think that both PSP and DS brought new things to the table. Even though I prefer the PSP, both consoles have made some cool options available. Same with consoles. There never was a golden age in gaming, it just was that since it was borning, everything was new. Not many of those games can stand up today and be still playable, only a handful can. Yes, today due to the massiveness of the industry we see more crap, but you can rescue a similar amount of games from this past gen too.

If you think that the golden age is long gone, thats because you have only been playing advertised games.

I think that the golden age of handheld's is happening now, even though people are very nostalgic about gameboy color.

The first reason is not only that you can have great games for the PSP, but you can also have old PS1 games via PSN, like Xenogears (Japanese PSN), which is pretty great.

Also, I think the DS is actually really innovative, even though I don't think it needs 2 screens (most games use only 1 and the other is for maps and such).

As for games in general, I think 1997 - 2003 was the golden age of gaming.

Qft

Handhelds are on the rise imo, with third parties putting much more time and money on software. It's not all first party, but we still get a ton of first party support.

TC, I thought this gen's Castlevanias were better than than any previous handheld ones :| I agree on one point though; taking out the 2D from games like Metroid or Zelda was for the worse.

Imo handheld gaming has never been better.

DS is the best handheld. Better than any gameboy,...

The games are GREAT, and the WIFI is super fun, not having to worry about a link cable and don't forget ONLINE. It's a blast playing MARIO KART online.

Considering that the DS has an awesome library and the psp is the first competitor thats actually holding it's own against nintendo's handheld...I'd say handheld gaming has never been better.

I mean in the past it was either gameboy or nothing. Now we have two options.

What games does the DS have that can top Pokemon G/S/C, Golden Sun series, The Zeldas (Link's Awakening and Minish Cap specifically), Fire Emblem, and Mega Man:Battle Network.

Seriously, Ninty's supporting the DS a lot, debatably as much or even moreso than previous handhelds. Development takes a lot more time now, they can't just spin out a new Advance Wars/Zelda/Mario every year. For the situation, I don't see why anyone's disappointed.

Why pay $40 something for a ps2 to psp rip off. With waterd down everything. When I could get a next gen game for $20 more. I bought both the PSP and DS. I'll never buy nother handheld again.

It's nothing specific to handhelds. The golden age of gaming is long over.

We can not even see gaming's golden age on the horizon.

Nothing is more sad then the "Golden ager" talking about how the goold old days are gone and blaming everyone and everything for their demise.

Pokemon Gold/Silver were pretty sick though.

Agreed. In my opinion it died near the end of the 6th gen.
