So which is it.. i bought fear the other day on my ps3.. great game.. some of the best AI and enemy animations ive seen who agrees with me?!!! just love how u pump a shotgun in em XD!! Anyways back on topic.. Fear uses the health pack system where you have to pick up health.

Which health system do you guys like?

The pick up system? which is in games such as FEAR , Half life , UT , Timesplitters and basically any last gen shooter lol
Health Regeneration? Cod4 , Resistance 2
None? Counter strike ( i really cant think of anything else.. )
Mix of both? Resistance 1 , had the pick ups and also it regenerated on which bar you were left on.
Or another health system which i am aware of? Can you guys list any which may be different to the above? I can kinda think of something.. Timesplitters the Ghost gun..suck the health from a foe?

i prefer the traditional health packs.. its a shame its dying this gen.. I feel regeneration is really cheap.. i mean you could pump a guy with a whole clip..he runs away.. comes back better then ever to mow you down.. its really unfair and a bit unreleastic...sure picking up health packs and instantly recoverying isnt realistic either however it makes more sense and needs a bit of thought , i mean there could be areas on a map where health packs are at and would be a good spot for an ambush , u have to be wary..

Discuss

(ps) i would have added pictures but dam they are SUPER hard to find...

I prefer a health pack system like FEAR where you sort of have to ration your packs, or a system like Crysis/ Halo: Combat Evolved where you have shields and then a regular health bar( well, in Crysis's case it regenerates extremely slowly)

This is the best health system because it makes sense. If I made a game, it would be a shield system like this that but with pick-ups instead of regeneration because it's actually logical (unless your suit is photosynthetic).

I prefer regen. It allows for more exploration and experimentation. Awhile back it was all about the health packs like in Doom and Half-Life. Now it's regen, for me anyways.

I really liked the health system in R:FoM. It worked perfectly (Except when there was none at the very start.). 4 quarters of health with only one quarter regenrated at a time. If you lost a quarter you could only restore it with a health pack. Other games like MoH:EA used this, but with R:FoM there was an explanation behind it. I think it's the perfect blend of both, and I'm sad to see it go in R2. I guess standard regen health is more popular. Shame it is also badly implemented in R2, where you're not really sure if you're close to death or not. No sign if you're near the end.

So many kids like regeneration, it seems.

I prefer old arcade game logic. Side-scrolling, one-hit death. Three lives, no continues.

Exactly. Online games, or online matches at least, should only be healthpacks, and they should be rare, if exist at all. Single player experiences can benefit from regeneration as long as it doesn't make it too easy, since it saves the tedium of having to load over and over and what not, if its too easy to hide behind a boulder or something and just Regen to full, it is kind of cheap, but I think something like Crysis does it well.

Pickups are the best if you ask me.

I hate this stupid regen system that Halo made. Its just so stupid really especially in COD series. In Crysis it made alot more sense and I accepted it a little more. But Overall the pick up system is the most challenging and the best:)

Not really. If it is a class based game with medics, then health bars are required. If it is a survival game, health supplies are good, and if its a realistic game, then no health bar or a regen works (Brothers in Arms Hells Highway did it really well with the supression until you get shot). Also regen works for arcady kind of games, like the latest CoDs.

Well what if they replaced it with being suppressed until you finally get shot? That would seem real. It would force you to take cover and throw your aim off, as it does now, just be more realistic as you can't take more than 1 bullet.

Either a medic system or not at all. Regeneration if the protagonist is of supernatural origin or is scientifically augmented, that's about as far as it gets.

I rekon fc2 has one of the best health systems, regen just makes the game really easy, fc2 has a nice use of sectional regen and gives the fell of actually healing when he pulls the bullets out. Health packs make you be much more careful, games have become easy since regen health has been in most games, wait a few secs all full again.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corner of the Earth's system. You get injured in different areas on your body and have to select which areas to heal based on what healing items you have (which can degenerate into worse problems over time if you don't heal them quickly enough) and after you select what you are healing, you have to crouch down (all automatic), take out the materials you need from your medkit and put them on your body, while being fully exposed to enemy fire.

It makes the most sense. You shouldn't be able to instantly heal while being fired upon (STALKER medkits), pick up instant heals (Doom/Half Life medkits) nor should you be able to regenerate health by taking cover (Halo).

Overall I prefer the health regen system. I dislike the health pick up method when it comes to single player games since I don't like to back track or look for health pick ups, but for mp games I don't have any problems with it.

I'd like a system where you have health-packs/med-kits or whatever, but when you use them, you actually have to take a certain amount of time to make it work, during which you are fully exposed and vulnerable to enemy fire, isntead of just healing instantly. Kind of like removing bullets from your body in Far Cry 2, only the healing should be more gradual.

I just started playing FC2, but I think I'll agree with you here. The system is a good mix of regeneration, and non, and requires you to think on your feet. If it's not the best, it's certainly up there.

Far Cry 2. Adrenaline syrettes (I would assume) and physically removing bullets/shrapnel is at least somewhat more realistic then taking 5 bullets to the head, then waiting a few seconds and be back at full health (ala COD series) Halo also had a good health system.

Good topic. It's actually hard for me to choose really. Regeneration obviously makes it easier just because as long as you have cover for a moment you technically have unlimited health. However, in some cases that feels kinda cheap and is definitely unrealistic. I excuse RFOM and R2 from this since they do explain why it happens. The Chimeran infection is giving you their regeneration powers. On the other end, health packs add a great challenge and the pressure to be cautious about your actions. If you get pinned down and are low on health, you better make those shots count or else you're done for. This can be an annoying system too though for people like me, since I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I'm not happy unless I'm at 100% health and armor all the time. So I spend a LOT of extra time on games like this searching for supplies. So it's a trade-off for me. I guess I can't imagine any of the games currently out using a different system since I'm already used to it. Half Life 2 would feel stupid with regeneration, and Resistance 2 would be totally annoying trying to look for health packs considering you get injured so often by the high number of enemies attacking at once. I voted for a mix of both. :D

while health packs make it seem more realistic...its freaking annoying when you dont have low health and cant find any health packs to use and therefore you are screwed if there are too many enemies or a boss fight..(i.e. red faction and timesplitters)

I always preffer health packs, not because of realism but because it's more of a challenge, regeneration is just plain easy and it's a shame that it's being used so much lately.

I like regeneration but I hate it when developers shorten your life and give you a lot of regeneration instead. Its like whats the point of regeneration if I die before it turns on? I'd prefer something like your shields regenerate and then once thats gone your left looking for health packs until you reach a checkpoint or something or find a health pack that resets your shield.

Resistance: Fall of Man had the perfect health system. I was sad to see it go in R@ along with the weapon system.

However, if the game is designed well enough, I don't mind either. Health packs feel "right" in Quke @. And regen in Reistance and Halo make sense because they give you a reason. Regen for normal human beings is stupid.

I like the mix of both like in Resistance 1. The regen thing i Don't like. It worked in Halo becuase it made sense, it was more of a shield thing then once it was gone, one shot and you were dead. I feel like the regen thing makes the shooting genre to easy. It seems like there is more strategy in the pick up method and really prefer that method, but the mix is really neat too. Was sad to see the Health system go in Resistance 1 go in Resistance 2 but I am still enjoying Resistance 2.

I like regeneration better, but it can depend on the game. I didnt mind Bioshock's health packs, but Half Life 2 was opposite. I think games like Unreal Tournament must have health and shield.

A hybrid of regeneration and health pack for me. I don't like regeneration in the style of Call of Duty 2's. I'd rather have a hybrid like Halo's, Resistance: Fall of Man's, and Far Cry 2. Even the health kit style of Half-Life 2 and F.E.A.R. are preferable to regeneration.

Offline or co-op I don't care, but for competitive online I prefer the regeneration system. Like Halo or CoD.

The game is much more fast-paced and exciting when you don't have to search for a health pack after every firefight. In team matches this is even more important because you can help your team push for the objective instead of trying to find a health pack so you don't die in one shot kinda thing.

Sure it may not be the most realistic thing, but I find it the most fun and balanced for competitive online.
