The Last Guardian Is Sitting Out This Years Tokyo Game Show

We really should be getting used to its absence by now, but confirmation that Team ICO's next big action adventure game, The Last Guardian, won't be making an appearance at next week's Tokyo Game Show is still a giant bird-cat-thing-sized bummer.

Attached to the good news that the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection would get the classy box art it deserved was a word of warning for those looking forward to more from The Last Guardian soon.

Sony wrote on its official blog that "The Last Guardian is not on the schedule for this year's Tokyo Game Show." Apparently, Team ICO lead "[Fumito] Ueda-san and the rest of the development team are hard at work to bring his lofty vision to life and deliver the very best gaming experience possible," hopefully sometime in 2012. While potentially distressing, we're happy to continue waiting for the follow-up to ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, as long as it means a better game.

The Last Guardian, originally announced at E3 2009, was pushed from holiday 2011 to 2012.

That sucks a lot. I wanna see gameplay because it looks so amazing, I hope it does come out next year and not 2013 and become new GT5 with 20 delays.

smells like GT5 to me, i want this game but hype is falling each year.

i hope not, its the only PS3 game i want, but the trailer looked to be running the game at like 20fps when noctis was slashing all the guards up, so PS4 would be better

This doesn't necessarily mean that it's not going through. It might just mean that they dont want to take the time away from development to work on a trailer.

Good decision. The Last Guardian is a megaton bomb that could overshadow Vita and get all the headlines. TGS should be 99% Vitamania.

And there have been pictures shown to Famitsu interviewers a little bit ago as well, we just never saw them. We'll most likely be seeing more of the game after XIII-2 (and possibly Type-0 in the West) is released.

What in the hell are all the japanese devs doing all the time?

Theres seems to be only a few teams that can get anything done with in reasonable time.

The vast majority of developers in Japan follow regular development schedules.

Sure, there may be a couple of flukes (Square Enix, Team Ico), but we have counterparts here in America (3D Realms, Blizzard).

Mysterious game is mysterious.

Maybe they're keeping it out of the public eye for a reason. Hype is building, but there's no new real footage with which to fashion expectations.

i have confidence in team ico, they made 2 extremely unique games last gen, and they have previewed the game for select press who seemed to really like the game, so its not like sony is just not talking about it, they are aknowledging that the game is deep in development and they are respecting the developers wishes to not make them take time out of their schedule to create a demo, creating a demo can take some serious time for devs

I'd rather get a perfect game than an unfinished one.

My guess is a late 2012 release, right at the end of the PS3's lifespan.

What are you basing this off? We're not sure where it is in its development cycle because of misinterpretations and flatout confusion from the last interview. Since the 1st production studio is almost finished with two major products, Versus XIII will be next. Whether it releases next year or the year after - it doesn't matter. It's still not vaporware which was my point.

Did people read the first post? They call it vaporware because the team decided to keep on working on the game to release it in 2012 instead of taking time off development to make a trailer for this year.

I have full confidence in Team Ico that they will release a very polished and great game :)

Hope it comes out soon, I expect a late 2012 early 2013 release date.

I hope this doesn't turn out to be vaporware. We might not see it until PS4.

Disappointing, but Team Ico and long development cycles go hand in hand. So long as they eventually make a game which lives up to Ico and SoTC, its all good.

So basically they just hit a wall and realized they don't know how to actually make the game. I realize game development isn't the easiest of tasks (especially when Shadow and Ico pushed the bar) but come on, it's just turning into a joke now. I hope the game turns out to be great since I've been waiting for it (and Ubisoft's I Am Alive) for quite some time now. Chances are they were way in over their heads on this one and are trying to resolve that. Granted, it can end up being the defining game on the ps3 and/or the defining game of this gen. Who knows, maybe they're having problems internally that nobody else knows about. I guess it's a good thing they're keeping quite about it rather than giving us little clips and what not as they did in the beginning and then just fell off the face of the earth.

Big surprise.

This game might end up on the PS4...or PS5 at this rate.
