Poll The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past vs Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater vs Halo 3 (132 votes)

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 52%
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 40%
Halo 3 8%

First, I asked you what the best PlayStation console was; then I asked you what the best Nintendo and Xbox consoles were, too.

Once you voted for your favorites - PS2, SNES, and Xbox 360, respectively - I went on to ask you what your favorite game on each of those consoles was. For the PS2, you voted Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater as the best game. For the SNES, it was The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. For Xbox 360, it was Halo 3.

So, you know, now let's take this to its logical conclusion- which of these games (all the third entries in their respective franchises, all on the second system from the console maker that they showed up on) do you think was the absolute best game? And why?

Yes, I know, they are three very dissimilar games. But eh, it's not an invalid comparison- you tell me which one had more of an impact, which one is more fun, which one you would rather play. Any or all of those metrics. It's not as much of a stretch as so many of you will surely try to tell me that it is.

So, I guess... vote?

Ocarina of Time > A Link to the Past > Halo 3

Ocarina of Time is always best. Ocarina of Time is the prime.

Honestly not sure if I played any of that zelda, so for me its between MGS3 and halo 3. Very tough. Content wise Halo 3 cannot be beat by many or by ANY in its genre. BUT, MGS3 is so damned perfect. IDK if I can vote.

LTTP but only because I played it when I was 'younger' and more impressionable so in terms of impact that wins my vote. Having said that, when I played MGS3, the story was excellent and some of the boss fights were immense.

Nope, Halo 3 was for 2007 the most complete single game package on the planet sporting a awesome 4 player coop campaign including nice open levels with both surface & air player controlled vehicles , the finest online MP plus forge mode, Bungie's continuous online support and the best FPS game play in the biz. Twas the only game last gen that should have even been considered for a 10/10 score, for it's time, nothing else even came close. :P

I'll have to go with Metal Gear Solid 3. Easily one of the most memorable gaming experiences of my life. ALTTP, while outstanding on its own, isn't even the best LoZ. It really is a testament to the magnitude of that franchise.

Yeah me too. Although MGS3 is my favorite MGS and right up there with it. I didn't grow up with Zelda as SO many seem to have. I was the kid in my neighborhood with Sega consoles instead.

I would say Ocarina of Time. However, I feel I must rephrase, as this statement is purely relative. To some ALTTP might be the best LoZ.

There's no one correct answer when the question is "which is the best Zelda game". Too many contenders.

I used to hold OoT in higher regard as well, but after my Zelda marathon (console releases only) a few years back, ALttP came out so far ahead of the pack.

It was funny actually, my whole order of best Zelda games got completely rearranged. Amazing how my memories of those games clashed with my current tastes/standards. For instance, I used to view WW as one of the best designed Zelda games. lulz. I mean, I still consider it a good game, but holy shit does it have some banal baggage to work with.

What puts ALttP ahead of the pack for me, aside from being timeless and very well designed, is that the game doesn't waste your time. No bloat, no padding, no bullshit. As soon as you start the game you're having fun. There is a constant sense of discovery and progression. At no point does the game force you to slow to its pace, or to jump through chores to progress.

It's just a joy to play from beginning to end. You could say the same of the original LoZ, but ALttP just does it so much better.

Or prefer MGS3.

I played A Link to the Past back in the mid 1990's around when it came out. Was an outstanding experience.

Metal Gear Solid 3 meant more to me than ALttP ever did.

ALTTP had great game design in most ways, with a lot of depth to its levels, puzzles, and bosses, and with tight controls, pacing and exploration. But the combat system lacked the depth of other 16-bit games like Mana and Oasis, and the world wasn't as big or open-ended.

@ConanTheStoner: Much of that also applies to ALBW (which is why THAT tops my list).

Oh, and about Wind Waker, I agree. I used to absolutely love it, it was in contention for my personal top spot, but I recently played the Wii U version... I mean, I still love the game and it's still probably in my top 5 for the series, but man, it just feels like such an unfinished game at times.

As for OoT, I don't really care much for that game. I think it has aged horribly and all the later entries in the series just trump all its achievements so thoroughly. Unfair on my part, I know, but, what're you gonna do, eh? :P

Later 3D Zeldas did improve in terms of dungeon design and combat, but one thing OoT did better than WW, TP, and SS, was being alot less bloated and much less time-wasty. I know alot of people criticize OoT for also having filler and all, with stuff like having to get Zelda's letter to enter Death Mountain, but honestly, OoT's "filler" never really bothered me that; certainly not much as some of the filler stuff later 3D Zeldas did.

That plus OoT still having some of the most memorable moments in the franchise (like the entire end of the game, from climbing Ganondorf's Tower while he plays his Organ, to the final Ganon battle) make OoT my second favorite 3d Zelda, right behind Majora's Mask.

@DJ-Lafleur: Zelda games got much more bloat-y with every successive 3D instalment, so I absolutely agree that OoT is probably the least guilty 3D Zelda game in that regard, but when I want to play bloat-less (I really don't know what other word I should use here) Zelda games, I go to ALttP and ALBW rather than OoT. When I want to play a good 3D Zelda game, I go to TP, and SS and MM. When I just want to have pure mindless fun with a Zelda game, I go to WW or Phantom Hourglass. Get what I mean? I mean, sure, OoT did a lot of things right, but every single thing it did well, other Zelda games did better... at least in my experience.

Sure I get ya, but for me the less fillerish or chore-ish a game feels, the more likely I'll be to replay. and I've played the N64 Zeldas alot more than I have the other games, thanks to the fact that they were more consistent and better paced.

Same here. I loved Super Mario World back in the day but that was about it. Never got the hype about other Nintendo Franchises. I played some Zelda games and still have fun playing ALTP on my android phone but nothing that stands out in any way or what makes it epic. Definetly good games but considering I put in easily over 100s of hours in Halo 3 alone and more of 1000 hours in the whole Halo franchise, this is my choice.
