...was Splinter Cell Conviction.
.
If I remember right I first saw it in its E3 demo in 09 and from the first minutes of footage it fully got my attention. It was a kind of game I always wanted to play.
.
Well, the final game delivered in some aspects, mainly the cover system. It was brilliant. Probably the best system I've seen in a game, it was so easy to go from spot to spot and you were always where you wanted.
.
It was ok in other areas, but like the overall game, they were not fully developed, like the point and execute system
.
But the mainly flaws of SCC comes from three points: 1) The terrible TPS mechanics, it was nearly pointless to shoot from cover. 2) The lack of a melee combat system. SCC had some amazing hand-to-hand sequences, but they were all scripted. So you felt like this top agent but at the same time you were extremely limited. And 3) The overall lack of polishing. The game felt rushed, the AI was really bad, some abilities you should have were not there (like carrying a body out of sight) and so on.
.
That said, the core behind SCC could make a brilliant game... one like no other. I hope the next Splinter Cell does that.
.
Anyone got this idea from the game?

I choose to not acknowledge any Splinter Cell titles after Chaos Theory, that's how I get by.

I think the biggest one was actually a liscensed game. The transformers one. seriously, all the peices for a great and fun game is there; big robots, big guns lots of explosions. If only they had put more effort into it.

Fable 2... they then went on to butcher it even more with Fable 3.

Fable 2 was good... but was basically fable 1 with better graphics. Everyone was expecing MUCH MORE! and Fable 3... ugh.. "lets take everything that made it close to an RPG out!!" "Excellent idea sir!! AND lets make it where you can't die!! and its the easiest game ever!!" "YES!! Exactly!!"

I agree with this, so much wasted potential. Some RPG elements wouldve made the driving and exploring worth it.

I haven't played it and never will but Nuts and Bolts.

What pisses me off about that game was that platforming isn't even a crowded genre, it could probably be said that there actually isn't a single good Adventure platforming game this entire gen, why would they think they needed to radically change one of the best 3d platforming series there is. They go ahead and make some mediocre vehicle creator with bland mission objectives instead:?

What the **** were they thinking?

How do you know that the game is bad if you never played it? Just because it is different, doesn't make it bad.

Well I'm just saying it's a bit rash to assume a game is bad because it is different, especially when you haven't played it. I'm not saying anything about the quality of the game itself.

Incoming long rant

Never playing it. EVER. Funny story but I actually had 300 bucks saved up just for a 360 and Banjo Threeie. I usually do this but there are numerous games that I would purchase for a system aside from the killer app. This was different I was literally buying a 360 for Banjo and I might have not bought any other games for it. If you haven't figured I'm a huge Banjo fan. I play Kazooie, love it, they say they're making Tooie, I get hyped. I play Tooie, favorite game of all time, they say they're making Threeie I get super hyped. Over 5 years and a gen later no Banjo Threeie and then finally they show a teaser and I get hyped beyond what you could possibly imagined.

Then they say bring out Nuts and Bolts. To tell you the truth I honestly just wanted to burn the 300 hundred bucks I saved thats the first thing that popped into my head. I've never felt like that, not with video games, it became personal for me and I waited years for this and they went too far. I have tried warming up to it Every year or so I start looking up videos and I want to throw up every time I see it. Such garbage.

Rare can go **** themselves.

/Rant.

I agree Fable II was disappointing and I remember G4 gave it there GOTY which was just ridiculous.

My second choice would be FF XIII waiting 5 years just to play a linear game, hopefully XIII-2 can be better.

Off the top of my head, Crackdown 2. Microsoft went through the trouble of creating a new game studio and what did we get? The same game engine that powered the original Crackdown which was by no means any where near close to impressive back 2007(calling it average, even, would be a complement) and set in the same map. The gameplay was exactly the same. And zombies all of over the place, the final insult.

Hell, it didn't even include a Halo beta to help sell this mess, it's like they wanted to fail. There was so much room for improvement in Crackdown and so much potential.

God of War 3. The graphics and scale were fantastic but other than that... sigh...

It's sad when the predecessor still kicks more ass than the successor.

NUTS AND BOLTS NUTS AND BOLTS

BANJO KAZOOIE NUTS AND BOLTS

... Ok the game would have been ok if it was a totally new IP.. but when you are dealing with Banjo.. the game could have been 100 times better... I mean Rares level design was incredible in that game.. it had massive scale, and amazing draw distance with top notch art design... Yet they completely miss used it.. If you were able to run around, climb towers collect notes and jingo's, fight a couple bosses... it would have been INCREDIBLE.. They had everything in place to make it amazing except they just ruined the gameplay

Yes, I agree. Fable 2 was good, but fable 3 was as if they fired everyone that made fable 1 and 2, and hired a graduate student to plan the game, get peter M to spout stuff about it and then remove every feature they ever added from fable 1, 2, and peters speaches.

I agree.. That first level with that battle on the mountain was beyond mind blowing

the game was a completely average hack and slash after that. Its like they put all their effort into the intro.

Sure, they do.. Now instead of making really unique quality software that sold ok.. they now just tell them to completely rip off whatever Nintendo is doing, with avatars, kinect sports, etc. and it'll sell millions.

Mine was FFXIII.

RoF could have been better in the storytelling department, but not so much of a disappointment as FFXIII.

I'd have to add The 3rd Birthday despite the fact that I love the game for its gameplay and atmosphere.

Maybe Rare wouldn't be in the posion it is now if it had made better games.

I doubt Microsoft bought rare for nearly four hundred million dollars to get games that sold "okay". If the core games aren't solid enough then they need to do something else with them.

For those lamenting Rare's current state, maybe if you actually gave Rare a chance and actually played their games instead of whining about how how they actually took some risks with Banajo maybe they'd be making games you deem worthy.

for me it's Alien vs Predator, followed by Kane & Lynch, but yeah Splinter Cell Conviction was pretty disappointing as well, I'm over it though oh, and like others pointed out, God of War 3, I was extremely disappointed, I loved God of War 2 but God of War 3 was an epic letdown

Fable 2: If they took the ideas from Fable 1 and expanded on them they could have had an amazing game. Instead they took out features, weapon types and made a worse game.

Assassins Creed: Brotherhood multiplayer. All you need is a game designer that can some how restrict stupid players from doing stupid things, and it would be so good. As it is, it's an incredibly flawed masterpiece. I mean... Why? WHY!? Why do players sprint across the rooftops, enter chase made & get a kill for 100 points? Anyone with a brain can average ~500 points a kill, 600+ average once they have poison.

The game is about patience. I'd win most games fairly comfortably, unless there were competent players. Most the time matches were just filled with idiots. I just had to drop a target by killing a civilian when it was the idiot that always ran around & went to the rooftops, or had to blend in an area where most idiots go to climb onto the rooftops.

Every time I saw my target sprinting at me, only to randomly divert away from me (he wouldn't know I'm a player, let alone his pursuer), sprinting off in another direction... I could have killed a kitten. Even worse was when I stalked my target.. They were trying to blend.. I moved in the crowd, ready to slowly move in & strike with my poisoned blade.. Only for my target, & the surrounding npcs, to be knocked over by a guy that just jumped off the roof, & the proceeds to sprint a few meters/steps & kill me for the minimum of 100 points..

Seriously. I've just turned off my console every now & then when that happens.

I agree that the multiplayer could benefit from some more balance, but it was so unique that I gave it a free pass. I'd say the awful matchmaking is a bigger issue.

If anything, Conviction at least brought the cover system to life for the stealth genre. Both Deus Ex HR and Hitman Absolution are using the same cover system. In Deus Ex it worked wondrously, despite the game also having a first-person system while not in cover.

Honestly, I could not disagree more. Bioshock was a true masterpiece and one of my absolute favorite games. Different strokes, as they say. Brink - I kept playing because of what it could have been. Quit because of what it wasn't. Two Worlds - There's a great game behind the shoddy developing, but I couldn't get past how poorly made the game was. Dragon Age II - the first game was incredible. It's as if they said, "Let's figure out what worked and ditch it." It's the only Bioware game I didn't like.

For me, it's Resonance of Fate. The game had a unique battle system, likable characters, intriguing setting, interesting overaching plot, etc; but imo, the game ended up being a boring, repetitive game with bland environments and a lack in direction (story-wise).

Battle-wise, I used the same strategy/pattern for about 90% of the battles, and I had no trouble whatsoever using that pattern. Only some boss battles made me alter my pattern or gave me a few troubles, but yeah, I mostly used the pattern. It's a huge flaw that you can beat the majority of the game using the same pattern. The game didn't do much to add variety in battles, and it certainly didn't help that everything was given to you from the start, as well as having battles take place in the same dull environments with the same enemies. Chapter 4 was probably like the only chapter that changed it up a bit, when you had to protect the statue. If they ever make RoF2, I hope they add more variety in battles, environments and enemy designs, as well as adding some skills.

As far as story goes, only three chapters (the last ones basically) pertained to the overaching plot. The rest were fillers, vague or completely pointless (the Christmas chapter comes to mind!) I admit that I liked the first half of the story, only because it was funny, and it did make me like the characters. But the other chapters had a completely different tone, and they weren't particularly good, imo. The story lacked focus.

I did like the customization including dressing up your characters, but yeah, the gameplay and story needed a lot more polish, imo.

Fable 2: If they took the ideas from Fable 1 and expanded on them they could have had an amazing game. Instead they took out features, weapon types and made a worse game.soulitane
I agree. Taking out armor was just stupid.

Hmmm, I thought Conviction was the best Splinter Cell yet, and I've played them all.

It took a pretty radical direction but it was less Solid Snake and a lot more Jason Bourne. It evolved and I hope to God they keep the same formula for the inevitable sequel.

OT, probably Far Cry 2 or Fable 2. Thought both were decent games but not as good as their predecessors. Fable 2 was definitely a step down from the masterful Fable 1 and Lost Chapters.

Far Cry 2 at least tried a load of new things but many of them just weren't well executed.

Splinter Cell Conviction is an excellent choice, but I think as far as "wasted potential" it should go to the Force Unleashed series. They aren't even terrible games, but given such a great license and a decent engine? Soooooo much more could have been done with a star wars title this gen.
