From 2007:
Jeff confessed that he never played Galaxy sometime ago. No loss here, he's a horrible "reviewer" (and no, not because of TP's score)madsnakehhh
While i don't think is a horrible reviewer, i don't like his reviews, i only go to GiantBomb to read/watch the reviews of Brad Shoemaker, now that's a reviewer, he should take care of that site reviews.
I don't think I can ever forgive him after the Shadow of the Colossus review. Also as good as TP was it more than deserved that 8.8. There I said it :P He totally failed on Shadow of the Colossus and Majora's Mask though :Pjg4xchampI personally would've given it a 9.0 but a two point difference isn't really that big. MM got straight up robbed though.
Also as good as TP was it more than deserved that 8.8. There I said it :P jg4xchampIts a fair score on the "Zelda scale", but when compared to other games that get higher scores in this place, not so much. Its still more polished, and has better level designed then 98% of games out there.

Giving a Nintendo game credit for polish and level design(actually I thought the dungeons were slackin a bit in TP) is almost pointless now Birds fly, fish swim, and Nintendo knows polish. Twilight Princess was great, but the repetitive and lacluster combat is in serious need of a fix. The dungeons were just far too easy and honestly gave off a serious been there, done that feeling. The overall game was like that to be honest. Midna's storyline with the twilight world was cool though. Overall great game, but Zelda needs some upgrades.
I think Jeff giving Majoras Mask an 8.3 was a bigger outrage than his TP scoreShinobishyguy
This x100! MM was such an amazing game.
How predictable is a 9.0 for SMG2? The content won't even matter, it could be a near-identical clone of the first and still get 9.0.
The New Super Mario Bros showed that Ninty can repackage 20-year-old gameplay and get a solid AA.

Like i said, if you review it in that context, sure, i guess.
It would be okay if this was a Zelda or Nintendo focused site, but its not and taking nintendo's polish and level design for granted (i actually think TP has some of the best 3D dungeons in the franchise) is very unfair since that level of attention to detail is the hardest thing to accomplish.
I agree that the combat was not perfect. Not Link's moveset, that was spot-on, the problem was that enemies where more of an inconvinience than a threat. The Ruppee reward system was also broken and the pace is off in the first hour or so of the game. And thats pretty much it.
Again, Zelda's standards are very high so i can understand the fact that these issues have ALOT more weight than it would have if it was a new IP (Okami being the best example of this) But then games like GTA4 and MGS4 pop up and score 10/10s and well, its kind of hard to take the score seriously anymore.

let me rephrase that better. I'm not taking it for granted, but it's like expected that Nintendo knows what polish and good level design is :P They are the absolute best in the polish department as far as I'm concerned. If anything that one outrage on TP is proof enough that people just can't accept fair criticism. Lets not forget the TP score is one of what...only 7 under 9 reviews for TP. TP killed it in the review scores, like absolutely ran up the scoreboard.
It was the perfect sequel, just diferent enough to blow you away, while still retaining the familiar Zelda charm. But i wouldnt say that its better than OOT, its just different and it really does benefit from the existance of its predecessor. By this i mean that OOT needed to happen for MM to be properly appretiated for its "strangeness".
I agree :)jg4xchamp

Pretty much so. I've still yet to play a Zelda game that feels as unique as MM.
I'd mention Wind Waker if it wasn't for the handheld sequels (not that they were bad or anything)

This, the relative score is off. Sure you can say well maybe he'd give MGS4 a 9.0, that would actually make 8.8 for TP a fair score but still GS as a whole should have consistent reviews. Matt on IGN nailed the scores on Nintendo games, they're pretty much spot on when compared to the average.
The thing is also, OoT for its day is lets say 10/10 whilst TP for its day is 9.5/10. But if both of the games would have been released simultaneously in the year 2006 TP > OoT from a gameplay standpoint.

Hell NO he got SMG right. Prime 3 was not a 9.5. It went backwards from Prime 1 and 2, hell no to brawl as well. TP was overfluffed as well. Matt on IGN was one of the softest critics nintendo has ever had. he's ten thousand times worse than anyone that has honestly worked for gamespot(ok maybe i can name one person, two actually)

I agree :) I would have to agree on this as well. Either MM or Deus Ex stands as my all time favorite game. I actually played through it again a couple weeks ago. It was funny though, I didn't feel not even a little wave of nostalgia while playing the game. To this day, MM is still a very original game by its own merits. I also think it broke my personal record for the amount of goosebumps I had playing through a game. A masterpiece in every step of the way. That's just my piece. Sorry for going off topic but whenever MM is mentioned I can't help but say a few words in its honor :P
Plus I genuinly hate review scores in general.jg4xchamp

Brawl is compared relative to othersmash brosaswell. Just like MKWii. I remember Bozon on NVC saying yeah it's better than DD which was 8.0 but it's not better than MK DS which was 9.0, MKWii is somewhere around 8.5.
When it comes to Prime 3, it was the controls and the increased production values that pushed a high score. Gameplay was FAR better, but yes, when you break it down you could argue the level design was not asgood, in fact, there was a horrible fetch quest.
I'm not gonna discuss TP, it just has better gameplay mechanics that are modern, with very little to no trial and error.

The increased production value is what ruined Prime 3. Why the hell am I watching cutscenes. Why are all the levels seperate planets? why is this game playing more like a shooter than a metroid game? Congrats on the controls though(not that it was a bad game, I still love it for the most part) Prime 1 and 2 kill KILL prime 3 in the atmopshere department. The boss fights were better done and far more challenging. The exploration and overworld wasn't broken, and sequence breaking was actually still there. Prime 3 on the other hand was linear, easier, and tried to hard to tell a narrative.Alright guys, new Galaxy named
Throwback Galaxy :O
What do you think its going to be?DaViD_99completely 8-bit styled
Should we really talk in spoilers? well w/e, comet coin reward;

^^ Thank God
I hated those damn prankster comets getting in the way when all I wanted to do was replay an old favorite level
.

Prime 3 on the other hand was linear, easier, and tried to hard to tell a narrative.Basically what you are saying about Prime 3 is that it does not capture the "metroid" atmosphere. In that case M:OM is not looking good for you I guess. For me it's Prime 1 > 3 >> 2. Prime 1 bosses.. I did not die a single time on veteran @ the last boss, but the Omega thing was brutal, too hard. I agree that storytelling was awesome in Prime 1 because I could skip it. I'd rather enjoy nice cinematics like the ones in MGS4, don't care for the story itself, I'm more of a visual guy and have no interest in stories so. Puzzles are weak sauce as in easier? If you mean easier in the sense that TP was easier than OoT then I disagree, I think that is a good thing.
The reason why he was dropping out 9s is because what you think a game should be =/= what he does. I on the other hand agree with 90% of his reviews. Again, that's not because I'm a super Nintendo fanboy. I actually think that MGS4 and Uncharted 2 are both better games than TP. SMG and MGS4 being the best games this gen, both deserving scores above the 9.5 range.

There is more information about Super Mario Galaxy 2 from Andriasang.com, such as information on the use of celebrities in promotions (also used for New Super Mario Bros. Wii), the hint television, the supplemental DVD, the "Helper Witch" (who closely resembles the mysterious Rosalina) whom players meet if they want to use the Cosmic Guide, and the newest Iwata Asks interview with Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Unfortunately, it is in Japanese at this time, but an English version will be available sometime before the game's North American release on May 23rd.
