I'm assuming so, anyway. Haven't played Galaxy but it looks unbelievable. I just got Ratchet and Clank ToD for PS3 and am somewhat surprised how the game doesn't get anywhere near as good as Mario 64.

But yeah, Mario 64 is better than all platformers excluding Galaxy since its release i.e. it was better than all others on N64, better than all others on PS, PS2, XBox and XBox 360. Last gen didn't beat it and this gen hasn't touched it either (apart from Galaxy!). Nintendo are the undisputed Gods at platformers.

Agreed? Discuss.

Wait what? I think Sunshine was better than 64, it's just it didn't go 4d so of course it was a letdown.

3D platformer. In the realm of 2D platforming (and platformers overall) Mario 3 and Mario World reign with Iron Fist.

Ill agree, Galaxy is easily the best platformer ever, but I will say there are a few platformers that were better than M64. Jak and Daxter and Yoshis Island for example.

the N64 Banjo games were better than SM64, same as Conker and Jak1 and 2 IMO but now the 3d platformer crown belongs to SMG for sure

Idk they are too different. Mario 64 did something alot better than galaxy imo, and that was making you feel like you were running around a playground with endless possibilties of things to happen, you could just run around, not do anything and have fun. What I didnt like about galaxy was the levels were too small, you couldnt run around in them all that much, and the camera was too far zoomed out from mario which drove me crazy, it made the platforming elements that were there alot less exciting. oh and horrible, horrible hub world, half the fun of mario 64 was the awesome hub world lol. But the music, graphics, alot other elements in galaxy where better.

how is shadow of the colossus not a platformer ? you climb mountains just to get to bosses which are moving mountains, which you climb and jump and climb and jump on.

I consider it an Action/Adventure because it has alot of exploring. It probably could be considered a Platformer from how you described it but it is still considered an Action/Adventure.

Actually that is alot of peoples opinions DK64 is either you really love it or once you force yourself to beat it you never want to play it again. Their was too much collecting in that game.

Shadow of the Colossus could be defined as a platformer, but it's a 'realistic' platformer, rather than a Mario-style one. No comparison to be made there.

Anyway, Mario 64 has been surpassed by a lot of other 3D platformers. And 2D platformers, for that matter, even excluding ones made before Mario 64.

I personally liked DK 64 better than Mario 64, but that's just my preference.

You are. But none of us care to hear you dump on a genre of games we all enjoy in a thread that's expressly about that genre.

Yoshi's ISland was a revelation when I finally got my hands on a copy. My favorite platformer ever, and still the art style I've ever seen. The fact that it was released at the very end of the SNES life cycle is still an incredible travesty, despite the game being released on handhelds.

I too hope one day to be so mocho that I scoff at games because they are designed for ages 4-100

Did i scoff? am i not entitled to an opinion. I can think of no other way of discribing this particular genre of games, that is how i see them. I like other types of kiddie game, Plants Vs Zombies for example, i call that kiddie yet love it.

Their are some Sub-genres for Platformers like Platform/Adventure which some people refer to Metroidvania because Metroid and Castlevania are the most popular in that Sub-genre. Then their is Action Platformers which is games like Gunstar Heroes and Metal Slug.

[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"]Shadow of the Colossus could be defined as a platformer, but it's a 'realistic' platformer, rather than a Mario-style one. No comparison to be made there. Anyway, Mario 64 has been surpassed by a lot of other 3D platformers. And 2D platformers, for that matter, even excluding ones made before Mario 64.mr-krinkles
Like what?

Off the top of my head: Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Jak and Daxter, Jak II, Klonoa 2, NSMB.
