I too hope one day to be so mocho that I scoff at games because they are designed for ages 4-100

Cherokee_Jack

Did i scoff? am i not entitled to an opinion.

You are. But none of us care to hear you dump on a genre of games we all enjoy in a thread that's expressly about that genre.

so me saying i dont like that genre, then stating my daughter does and she loves SMG is dumping on the genre? Would i also be dumping on a genre by saying i don't like ultra realistic flight sim type games? Mario is kiddie, its an expression, i really can't see why you are getting upset tbh lol.

cause calling a game "kiddie" ONLY insists that KIDS like it and not adults...which is o'so wrong

 I'm not getting upset.

I'm just trying to explain why coming into a thread about platformers (not even a thread asking whether you like platformers or not) just to say you don't like them and that they're kiddie and silly isn't the most polite thing to do.

[QUOTE="mr-krinkles"][QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"]Shadow of the Colossus could be defined as a platformer, but it's a 'realistic' platformer, rather than a Mario-style one. No comparison to be made there. Anyway, Mario 64 has been surpassed by a lot of other 3D platformers. And 2D platformers, for that matter, even excluding ones made before Mario 64.Cherokee_Jack

Like what?

Off the top of my head: Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Jak and Daxter, Jak II, Klonoa 2, NSMB.

NSMB? surely you jest.

Well, it is 2D, so it's hard to compare it to 64, but I feel that it's a better game today.

strange what offends some people. Well i love alot of games that i myself call kiddie. I call Boom Blox kiddie yet i really enjoyed my drunken go with it on saturday night, same with many other games i call kiddie. I'm no kid nor do i feel offended by people calling games i play kiddie. I just think it describes the style very well.

Ill agree, Galaxy is easily the best platformer ever, but I will say there are a few platformers that were better than M64. Jak and Daxter and Yoshis Island for example.

jimkabrhel

Yoshi's ISland was a revelation when I finally got my hands on a copy. My favorite platformer ever, and still the art style I've ever seen. The fact that it was released at the very end of the SNES life cycle is still an incredible travesty, despite the game being released on handhelds.

It really didnt matter when it was released in my case, I was still consistently buying and playing SNES games well into the PS/64 gen :P, so Yoshis Island was never far out of my sights and getting a copy is, much like you, one of the greatest gaming experiences Ive had to date. I simply loved it. I still break out my SNES just to play it sometimes.

I said my 6 year old Daughter loved SMG, more than other mario's. Although she never played mario 64 she has played pretty much all the others to death. So i thought i had a valid post. Backing up SMG as being a great game. Maybe i didn't have enough reason.

Galaxy can in fact claim the crown of best 3D platformer. Its not the best platformer though. That would be Yoshi's Island.

No it plays completely different. It takes good elements and adds more depth and complexity while still retaining its accessiblity to the average player. It encourages exploration and collection as well. Best Platformer ever.

Ok,

1) Mario 64 has to be one of the most overrated games ever. Seriously nostalgia blinds people in regards to the game. Banjo Koozie and DK 64 were more enjoyable platformers.

2) Super Mario Galaxy destrots Mario 64 like no other. This is pretty much fact (pfft call it opinion if you want!)

3) RATCHET AND CLANK IS NOT SUPPOSE TO BE A DAMN PLATFORMER SO STOP COMPARING IT. I hate when people talk **** but don't know what they're talking about. Do you understand the appeal of the Ratchet and Clank games ever since the series started was to blow s*** up? That's what it's always been about... That's why the game features an insane amount of unique 'weapons and gadgets not fit for this wrold'. The game simply has platforming elements and that's fine because it only enhances the game and prevents it from being like Ratchet: Deadlocked. If blowing things up and chaotic gameplay isn't your appeal maybe that's why you would think SMG is 10000000000x better than any Ratchet game you played. They are both very different games and are both great.

And that's exactly why I don't like it. I like 2D platformers to be simple and fast-paced, like the original Marios on NES and, more recently, NSMB and N+.

You don't have a DS or a gamboy advance? The port is there and its pretty decent. (original trumps it a little but overall extremely faithful port. It adds 6 new levels which were all well designed too. Endless World of Yoshi FTW)

I enjoy it for that. It encourages so many places for creativity and imagination that those games can't have. (I still love them) But if you watch a Yoshi's Island speed run it moves incredibly fast paced. You just have to know what you're doing. I for example can breeze throught the game incredily fast because its designed for many styles of play.

I don't have my SNES copy anymore so the GBA one does nicely. I'll buy it when it comes to VC but the port is good, trust me on that. The portability feels great asnd the experience with headphones is fulfilling. The original is best played in complete silence though with good sound. The atmosphere is incredible.

I'm assuming so, anyway. Haven't played Galaxy but it looks unbelievable. I just got Ratchet and Clank ToD for PS3 and am somewhat surprised how the game doesn't get anywhere near as good as Mario 64.

But yeah, Mario 64 is better than all platformers excluding Galaxy since its release i.e. it was better than all others on N64, better than all others on PS, PS2, XBox and XBox 360. Last gen didn't beat it and this gen hasn't touched it either (apart from Galaxy!). Nintendo are the undisputed Gods at platformers.

Agreed? Discuss.

soo iam the only one that was dissapointed with SMG ??? I found out that tha game is soo **** easy and too short, it really have 0 replay value. Even my 7 years old little brother could pass it with no problem within a week and he even couldn´t hold the control well because of a problem he has on his hands.

Psychonauts is my favorite platformer.

I disagree.

There's LOTS of platforming in Psychonauts, I know there's combat too, but not much more than in your average Mario game.

Regardless, it's still a masterpiece

damn and here I was trying to make sure nobody said Psychonauts. The game is rubbish, except for one or two levels while Mario Galaxy is near perfect all the way through. Besides, I think the whole overrated and underrated stuff is BS. If a game doesn't sell for whatever reason then maybe it wasn't quite as good as people claim it is?

Never been a big fan of these silly kiddie platformers. My 6 year old daughter however loves SMG alot. Although she loves Simpsons game even more than that lol.

Yeah I agree, so kiddy, well I'm off to play Gears of Call of Duty Resistance, the extra blood, swearing, and sexual content edition.

On topic: I think Ratchet and Clank and LBP are still better platformers.

They are both very different games and are both great.

mD-
Calm down. This isn't a bash on Ratchet and Clank. It's more an observation that an N64 game has owned most platformers (imo all except Galaxy) across three generations. I never played the Banjo games but no way I'd agree that DK64 is better than Mario 64.

Agreed? Discuss.

banjo kazooie and tooie say hi

QFT

Even in the N64 era I really thought Banjo (especially the original) was a better platformer than Mario 64. Mario 64 was groundbreaking, but B-K perfected the formula.
