All the youtube walkthroughs in the world don't do a thing about the whole "platforming from a first-person perspective tends to control like ass" thing.PannicAtackThat's why duke nukem 3d is regarded as one of the best fps ever because platforming sucks right?Platforming is what made duke nukem 3d f*cking duke nukem 3d!!!!!!!!!!Duke nukem forever doesnt feel anything like duke nukem 3d and that's why everyone thought it blows.

Duke Nukem 3D is well-regarded because of its sense of humor and style. Not for its platforming. Find me some reviews that praise the platforming mechanics.
Platforming is what made duke nukem 3d f*cking duke nukem 3d!!!!!!!!!!Way to contradict yourself.Duke nukem was a platformer before it was even created into a fps. Taking the platforming out of duke nukem is not duke nukem.nojumplmao
Way to contradict yourself. Not all all. duke nukem started as 2d sidescroller platformer it only makes sense to keep that aspect when creating a fps.[QUOTE="nojumplmao"]Platforming is what made duke nukem 3d f*cking duke nukem 3d!!!!!!!!!!

Duke nukem 3d is praised for it's awesome platforming based level design. It took fps to the next level back in the day. Read on youtube you see people saying it's some of the best level design ever.
I've never seen the point of realism simply for its own sake. The simulation aspect, that is, the accuracy the game in question showed in relation to military technology or S.O.P. was not what interested me, but rather:
1) The challenge
&
2) The sandbox effect, i.e., the range of possibilities the game provided me with.
I agree that certain genres (tactical military shooter) have been all but erased this generation, along with stealth games as we knew them, but then I play something like Dishonored, that's built entirely around the idea of allowing the player to be creative and approach an objective in a number of ways (and which is, in its own right, a very fine stealth game), or BioShock, or even Far Cry 3, to some extent, and it's hard to be upset about the loss of hyper-realistic military shooters. I was always much more interested in the flexibility of tactics those games offered, rather than their interfaces or the hard details of their contexts.
i agree, i haven't played a console shooter this gen that has matched the tactical depth of Vegas when it released. the slow methodical pace was extremely rewarding, and the progression was also very tough, most didn't make it halfway through, since you only got a considerable experience bonus from winning matches.
Its not casualization. its chasing COD money. Devs are fooled into thinking they can strike COD gold by noobing up their formulas. The only one that has had any success doing this is Battlefield 3.
I have no problem with COD. I have a problem with games like Socom, Killzone, Medal of Honor, and even Battlefield noobing up thier formula and maps in a vain attempt to cash in on COD. Killzone 3 sold no better than Killzone 2. Socom 4 tanked hard, not even coming close to even MAG in sales. Medal of Honor has never really gotten back off the ground. These are just a few of the bad examples. Greed stamping out originality is the problem.
But as far as Vegas goes, it WAS dumbed down, the tactical options were incredibly reduced, as well as tactical value of gameplay (you could pretty much just rush your ass through the whole game, only had to go silent where the game actually required you to do so)Unfortunately to publishers and developers, streamlining means to completely strip out any gameplay that involves thought and replace them with simple button presses. What's equally annoying is the thought that if a game doesn't have a ridiculous amount of menus and stats it's dumbed down. I think there is a happy medium there somewhere, it's just that no one has been thoughtful enough about their design process to find it. There also hasn't been a thoughtful dialog from gamers about what they want either.

duke 3d level design is so much superior to modern games it's crazy destroy tons of stuff around the levels, turn lights on and off ventilation shafts everywhere u can use to move around the levels, hidden doors, area's you blow up that create passage ways, open and close doors, guts that get stuck in between open and closing doors. Here's a platforming section i gotta jump across the shelves to grab some ammo and the rocket launcher on the box left corner.nojumplmao
seems a waste of time to me..why not just go up to said shelf and reach up for it? IF this is superior design I dont want it..lol
each level has multiple platforming sections like weapons high up on crates or whatever.nojumplmao
i dont want to platform while playing a fps..to each their own. im sure its a fine game..but we've got great fps out there now..some are boring ,some are good..just like every gen.

You dont even earn the weapon if it's just laying there on the ground[QUOTE="nojumplmao"]each level has multiple platforming sections like weapons high up on crates or whatever.VanDammFan

obviously you never played duke nukem 3d enough. There's so many tiny examples of platforming in every level of duke 3d it goes unnoticed by alot of people.[QUOTE="VanDammFan"][QUOTE="nojumplmao"]each level has multiple platforming sections like weapons high up on crates or whatever.nojumplmao

You dont even earn the weapon if it's just laying there on the groundbut who puts guns in all these strange places on some games? Wouldnt a gun be more likely on the ground or on a table then on a store shelf or in a box on a roof or a some other hard to get to area?..lol..its obvious you love the game. Thats great. I stand strong on some games as well..so its ok to stand up for it.

You've been playing call of duty too much and it ruined your view of how all fps should be. aliens were up on the shelves so why wouldnt rocket be up there?I dont play much of anything anymore..but nothing wrong with COD. Its a great game and more realisitc "to our world" anyways..Im very picky about what I like. If I dont connect with the game after 10-20min..im done with it.
go look at us army training courses they even do platforming.nojumplmao
like I said man..we all have our own tastes..its ok to feel a certain way. But I would never like Duke3D..I mostly play slightly more realistic shooters when I play..real looking people, real weapons, real scenarios,ect..with the exception of Halo and KZ..those 2 are great.."to me"

Dude in duke nukem 3d you had to take cover before any of those games plus it's more than just shooting unlike those games. Try Far Cry 3, its probably the best FPS this gen. Please Log In to post.
