The PC is the superior gaming platform - Definitive Edition

I'd like to see this parts list then, because I'm looking at the october 2013 issue of maxpc on my phone, and I doubt their 750$ budget build would do it.

A $650 PC wouldn't have played Farcry 3 at that time (without everything turned off or down)....dunno why you think a $650 PC will last from start to finish for this gen.

Yeah, I know. Last gen I didn't game on PC, so my selection was slim. I had a gaming rig back in 2004, and I went with the 360 in 2005 as my primary gaming system back then. I switched back to PC last year, built a new rig. I'm quite satisfied; PC gaming is better than ever these days. I still have a PS4 & PS3 on the side (but I barely turn them on tbh..).

Here's an interesting video that is relevant to this conversation. Palmer Luckey and Nate Mitchell of Oculus VR discuss VR technology and the current state of consoles, and where the PC market is today and where it will be a few years from now. Palmer makes some excellent points that will really enrage some of the fanboys around here...so it may be worth discussing in it's own topic. :D

Bullet points to take away from this:

-Current mid-range GPU's are more powerful than the current consoles

-In a couple of years, low end GPU's will be more powerful than the consoles

Palmer Luckey: "In 5 years, the consoles are going to be the same and even the bargain-basement, $300 back-to-school special laptops are going to be more powerful."

Nate Mitchell: "If you think about how far we've come in the last two years with VR, if you think where we're going to be in the next 5 years, you're not going to be playing a VR experience on your Xbox One or PS4, you're going to want to be playing on even a low-end Nvidia GPU."

Palmer Lucky: "The consoles of today have 10-year life cycles...within 5 years, we're going to be making hardware that no console would ever have a hope of touching. Not even just touching, but as resolution goes up and frame rate goes up, it could be that literally the consoles couldn't even output those resolutions, and when that happens there's not really much you can do to solve that problem."

Why wouldnt you think even a $750 would last as long as the consoles if the goal was to at least match or surpass them?

FX 6300, 8gb ddr3, AM3+ 970 board, Rosewill case, corsair 500w psu, 1tb hdd, and GTX 760 including dvd drive could be bought for under $680 last year. Heck there were deals on 7950's and 7970's before the bit mining craze seen some 7970's as low as $250. Now will a FX 6300 or gtx 760 7970 be viable in 5 years most likely not in pc oriented games that surpass the multiplat games limits brought on by these consoles.

Their build uses a 7790 for 126$.

The only unnecessary expenditure I see is an SSD for 70$, so you could substitute an ~200$ card.

Their next tier up baseline build uses a 7950 for 264$, so I'm guessing around this time period you would get around a 7850-7870 for about 200$. You could probably upgrade it later on to keep up, but I doubt it would last through the whole gen without doing so.

Expect 20+ pages of non-sequitur retardation.

Look at the first Assasins Creed game....now look at the last. Devs find tricks and whatnot for consoles. They will do more and look better as time goes on.....just like any gen. So the PC ports will get more bells and whistles and then you'll have whatever few exclusives that really ramp up the bells and whisltes....you're thinking of straight AAA titles that are multplatform.

When that happens you'll need a better PC. Just like any gen.

I can agree with that much! There's always upgrades...and PC hardware gets more advanced and less expensive every year, and consoles just stay the same. No amount of optimization will ever improve underpowered laptop-grade hardware that much. By the end of this generation our freaking cell phones are going to be more powerful than the consoles.

He said to take his laptop performance with a grain of salt. His gpu is 2gb while yours is a mere 768 mb. Hard to say how much vram it will use. If you're playing at 720p and lowest settings you'll probably be matching xbone settings which I would imagine is designed to use more vram.

Your 460 is as far behind the new consoles as a 6600 was behind the least gen consoles. Maybe I'm being a bit ectreme. Maybe yours is as far behind as the 7600 was for last gen. The 7600 didn't last long last gen.

Sorry dude a console that is barely more powerful than the 360 doesn't begin a new gen. Just wait until all multiplats are built from the ground up for next gen consoles and see how well your system handles it.

Wasn't Bioshock based on UE 2? How well did the high end gpu's from 2003-2005 handle that?

You can't compare PC's with ten years ago with PC's of today, and use that to determine which games today's PC's may run in ten years - the growth of PC hardware is exponential, not linear, and definitely does not coincide whatsoever with the system requirements of games. You would be guessing at best.

In your opinion. Here at SW the rule here (or unwritten rule at almost any other forum) is that PC is 1 system. Xbox One is 1 system. PS4 is 1 system.

This sort of goal post moving that "All consoles are one system" only occurs when PC steps into the ring. Any other time, it's PS4 vs Xbox One vs Wii U...how convenient.

Someone else brought it up in another thread. They are the fastest selling games for their platforms so it makes a good comparison for how well games sell on each platform.

Games typically sell better on console. Maybe it's because the pc is simply oversaturated with too many games to choose from.

Can't give specific reasons why you should compare all of pc to one specific console can you? GTA V sold about 30 million copies on console, are you saying it would have only sold 15 million if the PS 3 didnt exist?

Their figures are based from when? because in the fall of 2013 you could pickup a 7870 for $175, And 7950 for slightly above $200. If you bought a GTX 670/GTX 760 or 7950+ you can last the whole gen. Look at the 8800GT as a prime example from 2007-2014 its still outclassing the 360/PS3 in multiplats that are not incorporating DX11 features. The plain jane 7950 is over 50% faster then PS4 and with the X1 its double. The X1 is the base line and it dont take much with its weaker gpu.

So i'm not supposed to answer questions?

Whats more expensive, a pc to run all multiplat games the entire gen or ps4 and xbone? $800 for two prebuilt consoles isn't that much.

@Cranler: lol hope you know that Jedi's GTX 460, while may lack the Vram, It has a higher pixel rate, and ever so slightly less texture rate. So its on par with the X1's gpu which is sad how slow it is when comparing a mid ranged card from 2010. Then Bioshock 1&2 ran on Unreal 2.5 which used many of the features from Unreal engine 3. So why are you asking how well 2003-2005 gpu's ran the game when it didnt come out until 2007 let alone knowing the fact that gpu's from pre 2006 were designed around a different era of gpu architecture.But besides the point the geforce 7800 series did run bioshock pretty well considering at 1280x1024 0xAA 16xAF, Medium Quality, High Textures, DX9 getting around 35 fps average.

Where everyone knows that the 360 was special in 2005 because MS spent a shit load on acquiring prototype tech that would become the standards on the horizon. But come back to the now , where these new consoles are no where near as fast ratio wise nor are they sporting new tech, but mid ranged hardware at best.

Great points. Comparing the 360 to PC's of 2005 is not relevant to the discussion of modern PC gaming. It's nearly ten years and a full console generation later. Times have changed for the better...for the PC, that is.

consoles hardly run games at 900p and gen is just starting in a couple of years games will run like crap just like the difference between ps3/360 and a modern pc. Some people like to enjoy the better things even if they cost a bit more, some are used to mediocrity, but its alright my dear peasant.

The 460 will probably cause a lot of stuttering on next gen games.

Lords Of The Fallen is the 2nd next gen mutiplat and the 460 is the min req. Won't be long before the min goes higher.

PS 3 doesn't have unified shader tech btw.

It's $50 for a year on amazon. Most multiplats are same price on console and pc. Why do they need to buy additional controllers? Some multiplats control awful with m/kb so we need to add controller cost for pc.

What makes you think this console gen will be so long? Last gen was long because MS and Sony needed to recoup all the losses they sustained. This gen is quite a bit diffferent. I think it will be 5-6 years.
