What baffles me is that the 360 has been out for what 1 year and a 1/2 and has roughly a 9-10 install base, the ps3 has what 4mil at the most, and the wii..well they are running the show at the moment..

things to look at the ps2's install base is well over 100 million and the original xboxs is what 24million..and nintendo..lol is well..nintendo :)

lets use this illustration: the 360 has nearly HALF of its install base after a YEAR AND A HALF..things that lets me know is that most people who really wanted one got theirs already

the ps3 well we all know is overpriced to a certain extent(I wouldn't have one, if I hadn't saved up) ..but despite its hefty price its selling which lets me know 2 things..

-People who wanted one really bad got one and that people who desire to get one is holding back due to its price

Nintendo ..lol...is well being nintedo and on top..lol

all in all if Sony retains half of its PS2 install base then they could win easily, but without a price drop and arrogance it could cost them

the 360 has to pass their install base of their xbox 

wii has to outpace their DS..lol (which is actually a good thing)

Oh and the PSP btw isn't a flop (considering the took a chunk of nintendos handheld market, which is hard to do..)

First off, no, it did NOT wipe out 4 years of profits. Not from SCE or even from Sony as a whole.

2nd, I'm surprised everyone still thinks these companies are just in the business for the gamers. This is not some side project to be scuttled at the first sign of adversity. Many companies for a long time have quested after the ultimate set-top box that will channel all of your entertainment to you. Sony and MS realized that their odds of success were greater if they supplied a box that had been accepted more than a decade before, the game console, to achieve these ends. This battle isn't just among hardware boxes, it also entails formats, codecs and content over various genres and for everyone in the household. So, no; Sony will not be rebutted by a couple billion dollar loss any more than MS has been with their own multiple, billion dollar losses in this endeavour. Nintendo, meanwhile, seems to be enjoying their "good guy", underdog, "just for gamers" image even though they somehow managed to get just about every aspect of an online console (including shopping) working, except for playing games online. Whether this is an act to be more surreptitious and less upfront than Sony and MS; or if it is more telling on Nintendo's insistence of the highest quality in what they do, has yet to be seen.

Besides the high profit on their studios. Sony owns and produces some TV shows. Theyre no.1 right now in LCD HDTVs and Cybershot cameras. Their Sony erricson mobile phones are doing very well. God of War sold a tons of copies and they still sell alot with their PS2 and PS3s. Blu ray has been doing very well.

This holiday with those lineup of games they showed they will definitely sell more units. And Folklore, eye of judgement and LittleBig planet is gonna help move units in Japan. Right now the biggest issue with PS3 is it has no games.

The 360 would be a much better choice seeing as how the Wii wouldn't be able to run the next versions of either of those games.

if they ditch the ps3, it's becuase it's become a burden too big for sony...

altho even if they DID kill the ps brand (which is the best thing they cuold do, imo) they could ALWAYS relaunch a "home-media-supercomptuer-movie player" that happens to play ps games, meanwhile naming it something i bit more worth the price of $600....

will it happen? prolly not... sony isn't too bright nowadays...

To say just because this intial start up cost for PS3 is higher than previous systems (PS1/PS2) means it will fail is being idiotic.  SOE is not going to discontinue the system.  If the GAmecube could live for 5 years I seriously doubt the PS3 is in any danger.

Besides, PS3 is pushing their Blu-Ray technology which to me is in the back of their mind.  Discontinuing the PS3 admits defeat for that technlology and I know they are not going to do that.  They have put all their chips in and in one way or another the PS3 will not be going away any time soon.
