That is the only question... if the new SKU is true with the build in HDDVD drive--is HDDVD going to be use for gaming as well?

yes they will.

Heard it on an interview a while back...the guy said...HD-DVD will give developers unprecedended amount of space...unataiinable on DVD...but everyone was like WTF? 360 will never get HD-DVD standard....but that's what they said about...HDMI too :P

That would be up to developers to decide if they want to use HDDVD. And with the sales of the the actual unit, you'd be significantly cutting down your market. Even if MS released a new system, that would just anger alot of customers.

i would say no.

and i dont think they will give developers to use the HD DVD for gaming because it isolates the vast majority of the 360 market.

A higher format has the potential for longer games. However it is up to the developer to actually make the games longer. Just because its on blu-ray does not mean a game is gonna automatically last you like 20 hours.

then whats the point of blueray for gaming if sonys own first party dev teams wont even take advantage of the extra space?

Again.. why would he do that? He wouldn't sell any copies because probably 90% of the Xbox 360 fanbase can't play HD DVD games :| Quit grasping at straws, your thread failed miserably :|

The point of Blu-ray in the PS3 is just to push Blu-ray. Thats it. It has nothing to do with gaming. This is coming from a PS3 owner. PS3 would have been just fine with dvd. But it is nice to have it though.

He do care about making money too, but his top priority is to make the game perfect... and this is theonly reason he chose the blu-ray because it was giving him that capablity to do so... with HDDVD he can do the same now.

Is that a SERIOUS question, or just a question?

Hopefully you weren't serious, because they would never do that. They've already sold 15 million units that don't read HD-DVDs.

The 360, thanks to its great software sales, is actually making them money, They arent that stupid enough to kill the console just when its starting to make a profit.

If the new SKU hit market.... everything is up to third party developers now... they will probably make the game on DVD9 as well on HDDVD... but on HDDVD the game will looks much better.

The HD-DVD drive will be used for movies only, all games will still be DVD-9, I believe its pretty well established a DVD9 is fine for current gen games

If they want to add more content, they can add another disk

They don't need to, but all that extra space

it depends really, if HD DVD were to win the format wars with blu ray there is a chance they might choose HD DVD.

Maybe thats what they were waiting on in the first place

The disc size doesn't really limit the games "size". It more controls the compression of the audio/video.
Why would you wan't a 50GB game with uncompressed audio/video compared to a 9GB game with compressed audio/video?
What do you think takes less time to load, 9GB or 50GB? Long load times FTW. /not

They might not have actually made a profit last quarter like people on this forum think they did. There is no "xbox division" at MS. It's not just the 360 that contributes to the branch that gaming is contained in. Honestly, that profit was likely due to the release of Halo 3, but there isn't a way of proving that, unless you have inside numbers. And either way, Halo 3 cost 50 million to make, so if you factor that into that quarter and figure that they're running at a 20% profit margin, that would completely negate the first month sales of Halo 3.

The 360 is not a money-making machine whatsoever, and it will probably cost MS more than $1 billion in the end.

No it will not be used for gaming. If any developers released a game on HD-DVD they would be limiting the userbase to a small fraction of 360 owners, and that would just be stupid.

The xbox division made a profit last quarter. And has been making profits since last year save for the billion dollar write off for the RROD.

Overall, they're still billions in the red though, but they're finally making money.

Microsoft played their cards right waiting this long before intigrating an HD Player into their hardware, it gives the end user a choice and doesn't force the consumer market to pay for a player that may be the next Betamax, and that statement could apply to Blu-Ray or HD-DVD at this point.

In a generation where Microsoft has been working fairly hard to maintain and build upon their userbase I very much doubt that they will opt to start releasing games on HD-DVD and basically leaving between 13-14 million existing console owners out in the cold, even if you put that aside PS3 which is suppose to be the marvel of modern gaming technology doesn't even have most of its games taking advantage of Blu-Ray or 1080p at this point, why would Microsoft alienate its userbase for a format most developers will not even take near full advantage of till next generation at the soonest?

It also would be a disadvantage for developers,

Do you spend all that design time and resources developing an HD-DVD titles for 360 and the few million users who may end up with an intigrated unit, or do you focus on the 13-14 million who have a regular 360?

All the combined unit goes to show me is that Microsoft feels that HD-DVD as a format will be around for a while, and if anything it leads me to believe that next gen HD-DVD will be the media of choice in the Xbox 720.

But again, for this gen I highly doubt it.

http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9740021-7.html

Microsoft said on Thursday that it will expand its warranty on the Xbox to three years for certain hardware failures after an investigation showed the game console can be vulnerable to problems.

"As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures," Microsoft said in a statement. "Having identified a number of factors which can cause general hardware failures indicated by three red flashing lights on the console, Microsoft has made improvements to the console and is enhancing its Xbox 360 warranty policy for existing and new customers."

The company said it will cover machines that experience such failures for up to three years from the date of purchase. To cover the cost of the new policy, Microsoft said it will take a pre-tax charge of $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion in its just-ended quarter.

"The majority of Xbox 360 owners are having a great experience with their console and have from day one," Entertainment & Devices Division President Robbie Bach said in a statement. "But, this problem has caused frustration for some of our customers and for that, we sincerely apologize."

Microsoft said it will reimburse customers that have already paid for repairs for the hardware problem that is indicated by the three flashing lights.

The company said it will cover machines that experience such failures for up to three years from the date of purchase. To cover the cost of the new policy, Microsoft said it will take a pre-tax charge of $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion in its just-ended quarter.

That doesn't tell you how much it is costing them. That tells you how big of a charge they took against a single quarter's earnings in order to help pay for the repairs on the 11.6 million sold at that time. For all we know, it could cost them $3 billion, they just don't need to charge that all at once.

No wonder it was only 5 hours of gameplay....

Because the length of a game is directly proportional to disc space?

Looks at Heavenly Sword and Uncharted

Thats the most reliable figure anyone has right now. Anything else is pure speculation unless they release more financial statements. Right now, MS has spent 1 billion $ on the 360, No one how much more it may cost them in the future, or if they covered the expenditure for repairing all 360s in one go as a deferred expenditure.
