the tower (decent CPU, motherboard, power supply, and fans)   $300
2 gigs of high quality ram   $100
Windows Vista   $200+  (amazing how hermits fail to add this to their "PCs arn't so expensive" arguement)
a decent Video Card   $250

That's $850 for a new next gen PC which will go obsolete in 4 years.  Oh, and don't forget about the bugs.
Sure, you can slowly upgrade...but every 4 years you're basically spending the $800+ in total anyway.

850 dollars for a next-gen PC? I bought one that wasn't at the best of standards last year and I paid 1200 for it. Pretty damn good deal if you ask me.

Come on, Vista?
So actually it's $650. You might as well buy a PS3.

Well, at least you didn't say it was $3000. But hey, I happen to think a system which will max out Crysis and last 4 years is a pretty damn good deal, since you can use it for so much more than gaming (and it's actually feesible).

Quoted for Truth I spend $2000 for my PC not even a year ago, just to find out that I can't play the most hyped PC games coming this year unless I do a $600 upgrade. :|

Yeah, because instead of upgrading PCs, everyone just decides to throw the old one out every 4 years and buy a completely new one?

I mean, once you've got a tower and Vista (not that you'd need Vista), you won't need to upgrade your RAM beyond 2 gigs for a while, and so all you'd need "every four years" is...a $250 video card.

that's really cheap. hahaha, my pc costs way more than that. my graphics card alone was 460. then i bought ram, a bigger fan. etc. my pc was probably around 1500 or so. good thing my dad paid for it all. your thread kinda...you know...failed.

Obsolete in 4 years? Just like consoles right? At least PC's are upgradable and can be used for other tasks. What do you do when your last-gen console has been overtaken by the next-gen console?

Well, part of the problem is no one ever differenciates between "upgrading" and "building fresh" here. I've been doing core upgrades to my computer maybe every 4 years since my first computer (CPU, MOBO, MEM, PSU, TOWER). This seems to be the kind of upgrade implied in the TC post because it does not include things like a HDD, DVD, etc. But sometimes you gotta start basically from scratch no matter what (especially if you plan to still use the old PC). As for needing Vista, I believe what the TC means by calling the computer "next-gen" is DirectX10 capable, which requires Vista. Someone else posted something once about some supposedly free OS that also was to support Directx10 (with Microsoft's support even) but that sounded awfully suspicious.

yeah. I usually just get a really good graphics card that will last me a long time. and my tower is fine, my screen is fine. I may upgrade my ram just to make it faster, which isn't really necessary, but I like having my computer, really really fast :D and my hdd has 200 gigs. so im set for a loooong time.

well in my opinion starting from scratch a Good next gen computer would be around $1100, though the way I look at it is that evey one buys a new computer every 5 years any way and they will spend maybe $600 so I dont know if you get at what I am getting at but your not really spending that much more.

$250 video card now, thatll be obsolete in 2 years at most. Its probably not DX10 so that is kind of lame, unless $250 is what a 8800GTS 320 costs in USA, not sure.

Where did u come up with the idea a decent processor / MOBO / case and fan would cost only $300, u building a sempron or somethign? single core piece of junk?

So, you can actually play them, just not on Direct x 10 mode..... These games look great in Dx9 as well you know.

Also, the 8600 GT and 8600 Ultra are both Directx 10 cards, and cost $150 and $180. Who says you need to spend $600 to upgrade?

If we're not getting a Dx10 card, why are we getting Vista? Also, the cheapest Dx10 card is about $150, so the $250 is probably Dx10.

Having been about 80% hermit for the past decade, I've learned NEVER to buy a comp from stores.  Shop online and custom build your own rig.  It's still expensive for a game machine though :(

I used to know a bit about computers but since when have processors costed a grand?

When your buying Quad Cores only a few months after release. It's completely unncessary.

[QUOTE="OceanLeet"]the tower (decent CPU, motherboard, power supply, and fans) $300

MrGrimFandango

$250 video card now, thatll be obsolete in 2 years at most. Its probably not DX10 so that is kind of lame, unless $250 is what a 8800GTS 320 costs in USA, not sure.

Where did u come up with the idea a decent processor / MOBO / case and fan would cost only $300, u building a sempron or somethign? single core piece of junk?

Do some looking online. You can find some barebones kits with the cpu, motherboard, and powersupply for a reasonable price. As for the video card, you just gotta know where to look.  And NEVER buy tech that is brand freakin new.  It's a waste of money.  Give it a few months to age.

Ouch, what did you buy a Dell or something :S

what did you do buy it from bestbuy or some thing?

I'm talking about games like Crysis and other DX10 games that I want to play. I can run games on minimum, hell mostly maxed out, but the games coming out soon *crysis and UT2K7* will look like crap. It can play everything else. That's total BS I brought PC so I can play EVERY game not some.

1. were did you buy it? 2. did you even do basic research? 3.what is your computers specs? 4. you got ripped off either way.

my specs are 512mb ATi Radion xt1600 Graphics Card Dual Core AMD Athlon X2 64 bit Processor 192kz MAudio Sound Card 2 GB Memory

I do beast upgrades every three years, anything after that and you hardware starts becoming extremely dated and not able to run anything thats new. Hell my computer i built three years ago and run every modern game at the moment on medium settings still, i'm only upgrading at the end of the year for crysis, ut3 and spore.

I know that, it's just that some people want to build the cheapest gaming PC they can and then complain when they cant get more than 30FPS in Oblivion, it's those people that piss me off.

Actually 1,700, I rounded up.

Oblivion looks like crap on it, and so will Crysis and UT2K7

Not even a year and I'm seeing games that won't run on max.

Idc though I didn't plan on buying them anyway.

With an exception of the Half-Life series I find all PC games *the ones I brought and borrowed and tryed* very very stale.

I'll just stick to consoles, handhelds, and arcades.

If you already have a PC to build off of it's cheap.  If not, yes it's much more expensive.  But a PC is a PC, it's not just for gaming.  And yes computers are very useful.

the tower (decent CPU, motherboard, power supply, and fans) $300Next gen?
2 gigs of high quality ram $100 Closer to $200
Windows Vista $200+ (amazing how hermits fail to add this to their "PCs arn't so expensive" arguement) If your running Vista and want to play games smoothly you need more ram than 2gigs
a decent Video Card $250  250$ isnt decent and definetly not next gen

That's $850 for a new next gen PC which will go obsolete in 4 years. Oh, and don't forget about the bugs.
Sure, you can slowly upgrade...but every 4 years you're basically spending the $800+ (if you dont count a monitor,kb+mouse,dvd/bluray....) in total anyway.

You won't have to spend $800+ every 4 years. I've had the same computer for 6 years, I've just upgraded the RAM once and the graphic card once. At the least you can buy a $900 computer or the parts for around $700 and build it yourself and play the best games. Then buy a new $200 graphic card every 4 years.

You don't have to buy a whole new computer every 4 years. That's the great part about PCs, you can upgrade it.
