No doubt them pushing these good features is because they're behind this gen, overall as someone who supports the platform I find these good features. Just goes to show that these gaming companies only really try to implement good ideas when they are pressed to. I find largely the reason Sony hasn't supported digital BC, rights retention of digital BC PS1/PS2 classics bought on PS3, and puahing the streaming service for BC, is mostly because there's no pressure to because of their success thus far, same reason they didn't want to do crossplay. I think their tune might change next gen, when things will be more competitive at launch.
As far as cross-play goes, while MS stands to benefit from increasing player pools no doubt, so do publishers, and I feel publishers want this more than anything to support community vibrancy on all systems and make it so no port gets sidelined in player support thus increasing potential monetization. Overall, it's better for everyone they do this, so I dont know why it's a huge fuss, though I understand Sony's reasons, I don't know why their supporters should see things the same way.
