I should just just let people know.. If you're going to buy NIER because of all the talk about it having a fantastic story.. Don't give up on it. Play it to the end... And then play it again.

..Just do it. Definitely one of my top few favourite games of the generation, and of all time.

irrelevant thread is irrelevant.

But on topic, Infamous 2 and Red Dead Redemption.

Yes. A convoluted mess with a terrible ending does not make for a "good" story.

STFU I almost cried during RDR's ending! (not serious) But seriously, I thought it had an excellent ending/story. sure in the beginning of the game you had to do all that boring mundane stuff, and the long horseback rides, but in the end it was all for character building. By doing those mundane missions, you felt like you knew these characters like bonnie, etc... you felt like you had actually been through something with them, and feel attached, and it makes it easier to feel empathy for them.
for instance, you actually feel empathy for John Marston, how he is ultimately being f*cked over by the "government" and used, and I let out an audible "what the f*ck" when John Marston got shot up in the end". That was pretty f*cked up, they just kidnapped his family, and used him as a pawn to take out the members of his old gang, then threw him away when they were done using him
I never understood why people called games like Metal Gear "convoluted" (I started playing it when I was 12 and understood it perfectly) and now Red Dead Redemption too? Seems like any game with a serious developed plot that doesnt revolve around aliens, sci-fi, explosions, and "pew pew" is "convoluted" nowadays. (not belittling you btw)

So far I have to go with the Mass Effect games (love the story in them and the sci fi setting) and have to go with The Witcher games (dark fantasy ftw).

RDR *could* have been so much better, but it was poorly written and paced. Then there was the whole "moral choices" that could completely contradict how Marston was acting in cutscenes. And the ending was just sh!t. It was one of the most anti-climactic things I've ever seen in gaming, and felt like it was TRYING to make me become emotional. A convoluted plot is something that takes longer than it needs to be to tell its story, or adds in new antagonists or elements later on to add complexity for the sake of it. The first Metal Gear, and MGS3 aren't convoluted. MGS2 and from what I hear, MGS4 are excessively convoluted. I loved MGS2, but that doesn't stop it from being far too drawn out for its own good. The story that RDR told could have been over in 2-3 hours... but they stretched it out to 25. THAT is convoluted.

I enjoyed Portal 1/2, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed 2, Infamous, and Fallout 3 story-wise. I've just started my first Mass Effect playthrough, and it's intriguing so far.

Good question. I'm going to say: 1) Valkyria Chronicles - just an umbelievable job...played like being in a top notch anime film 2) Infamous 2 - normally action adventure games have fairly predictable story lines, but Infamous 2 had a lot of surprising twists for me.

Probably gonna get a lot of hate for this but the two best stories to me were Mass Effect 2 and Gears of War 3. Honorable mentions go to Assassin's Creed 2, Bioshock, and Halo 3.

The 'Mask of the Betrayer' expansion has the best story of this generation, it's a dramatically different, and superior campaign compared to Neverwinter Nights 2. I can't think of anything els in the same league this generation alone.. Maybe Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, which i have mixed feelings for, i absolutely love most of its story, but it really dropped the ball towards the end in a catastrophic way, not a worthy sequel compared to the original which is infinitely better.

Well last gen it was Wind Waker. I never experienced a video game story of that calibur before or after its release.

I really don't know about this gen... I definately haven'y played through one even remotely at the calibur of Wind Waker this gen, but that might be asking for too much. Most games just aim to entertain or force an emotion on you. Wind Waker actually had a purpose and a great deal of weight to its narrrative. It used so many layers of metaphor so ingeniously and naturally I get a tingle down my spine just thinking about it.

Even that is subjective. Uncharted 2 tells its story well, but it tells it as if it was a movie. I feel the best ways to tell a story in a video game is to tell it in the environments and during gameplay. Taking control out of the hands of a player is something that should happen rarely IMO

then thats one stupid person...its not even something he had from his son, it was a box, filled with clues, sent by the killer...the guy could have easily handed that to the cops, im pretty sure he had better things to remember his son than a box sent by the guy who killed him. its like saying that the father of a girl who was raped and murdered will keep the panties she was wearing that day because it reminds him of her.

If you want two stories that will change your life than play either Planescape: Torment (with a few mods that i could recommend for visuals and bugs) or Xenogears.

Well I jumped the gun. I agree with you for the most part. This is why I stand by Nintendo. I'm currently on Twilight Princess--60 or so hours in and, as you brought up WW earlier, I'm almost inclined to say that Twilight is even better. But to your point. I agree with your statement in regards to the environment. That cohesive world is very important. NIntendo is a master of this. When I first entered the Woods to get the master sword in TP I felt like a kid watching a disney film. There's that unwritten magic that goes along with things--when things are tightly knit together.

However, I still stand by my statement. Uncharted 2 really weaved things in perfectly. Cutscenes came at the right time, right as the player needed a breather. Uncharted 2, imo, is the epitome of this generations core game design from an audio, visual, cinematic, and gameplay experience. The voice acting/writing exceeds most films coming out today, and the story is rather complex from an inter personal perspective.

Umm....no best storytelling is subjective too :)moose_knuckler

Not really, there's a craft to it.
you guys are making me interested in nier... it looked like an above average jrpg. Maybe i should give it a shot..its fairly cheap here in aus. I keep hearing great soundtrack and story...how is gameplay? is it turn based? Much grinding?? linear? open?

It's really similar to God of War and Kingdom Hearts. It's a fantastic game in any case and I think that it's worth buying.
