I can't do two.

I though Grand Theft Auto 4 was a suprisingly deep character drivien story. It was fantastic, and Liberty City was also a great character.

Bioshock really deserves a mention. The world was so detailed and beutiful.

Halo 3, though not quite as ambitious as both, was quite good, and ended great.

Left 4 Dead 2's player driven stories are excellent. Valve is really pushing the video game narrative.

Penumbra. It was quite simple, but the experience was unlike anything, Amnesia failed to capture it's magic. Red was a chilling charectar, and the narrative was thoughtfully told. Clarence was also quite intersting.

As of recently:

Okay, everyone is gonna KILL me for this, but Modern Warfare 3's latter half was amazing. I actually started to care a bit for the characters. "Blood brothers" had a great flashback sequence, and the ending was a very good wrapping up of the MW trilogy. I wouldn't say it's the best, but I can't remember the earlier ones of this gen. They are most likely better but this is a recent one I have liked.

This thread went on ALOT longer than I thought.

Anyways, I keep hearing alot about Nier and Mass Effect and even someone said RDR... I have no idea how RDR's story was that great.

Best story is far too subjective. Best TOLD story, on the other hand, is not. Uncharted 2.

Heirren

Best told story is just as subjective.

Not really, there's a craft to it.

Heirren

I don't see how "craft" makes something non-subjective.

If you're determining what is "best", it is subjective because best is an inherently subjective term. End of story.

Dragon age 2 of course along with it's superb cast of unforgetable characters and it's supertastic story that sucked you in.
On a serious note DXHR (i like cyberpunk conspiracies) and i loved Heavy rain story although it has flaws, but then again which story Doesn t have flaws?

[QUOTE="moose_knuckler"]Umm....no best storytelling is subjective too :)Heirren

Not really, there's a craft to it.

Not really, there are many completely different ways of telling a story that come down to preference. Otherwise everyone would have been completely satisfied with books.

Oh yeah, forgot Heavy Rain. Even with Heavy Rain in the equation I still prefer DE and TW2 stories. On on DA2, despite how much it sucked compared to the first one the story and characters were not half bad.

And Silent Hill Shattered Memories because of the way the game merges with the story. The game is storytelling. That's all there is to it. There are so many small details that just explaining what happens in the game just doesn't do it justice.

And that is my two cents. It's a shame more people didn't play either of these games.

turtlethetaffer
I agree, Shattered Memories exemplifies how stories in game should be told, it doesn't need over the top cinematics or even scripted sequences. One of the few games that have actually pushed the medium of video gaming forward, its too bad no one took notice.

God of War III was the perfect «ending» for the «trilogy».

I think The Last of Us will have one of the best stories and be one of the best single player games of this generation.

The Stanley Parable. A game that's very un-game, but divers into the nature of interactive stories through interactivity. And it's also utterly amazing. Heavy Rain gets the award of most promising turned astoundingly poor, this side of MGS4.

Best story is far too subjective. Best TOLD story, on the other hand, is not. Uncharted 2.

Heirren
The term 'best' is inherently subjective when we're comparing media like this in these regards. Strengths and weaknesses sir, most games have more of the later.
