The iPod nano have really small disk space compared to the other iPods, but they still sell. And now that you mention sleekness... Isn't the Wii really, REALLY sleek compared to Sony's and Microsoft's mammoths? ;)
LordQuorthon
Yes, but what does that have to do w/ nintendo creating desire? It would be just as easy to say they recognized that people already desired sleeker products (since that has been the trend in tech for so long) and offered it. So you can take your ;) back.
Wii's attach rate is right now as high as the Xbox 360's. Do some research on the subject.
LordQuorthon
- Xbox 360: hardware to software ratio: 6.59 (hardware total sold = 6.8 million; software total sold = 44.8 million)
- PlayStation 3: hardware to software ratio: 3.58 (hardware total sold = 1.9 million; software total sold = 6.8 million)
- Wii: hardware to software ratio: 3.44 (hardware total sold = 4.5 million; software total sold = 15.5 million)
If you do the math you'll find that if the wii has the same # of hardware sold it would have half the amount of software. That's pretty telling. Don't assume someone hasn't done research. This is from Oct 07 by the way.
I never said it was easy. I said that's what they do, or at least Apple and Nintendo. Look at Pepsi; they were getting their asses kicked by Coca Cola, until they decided not to fight with Coca Cola on their ground and started selling bottled water. Was bottled water really something consumers wanted? No. They created their own demand and MADE it necessary. Again, I never said it was easy, but some companies have managed to do it. And when they do it right, there's no way to stop them. No matter how many "Drink tube water. It's just as good, really" adds the government pays for, no matter how many Grand Theft Autos are released for the PS3/Xbox 360, and no matter if some company that is not Apple manages to release an mp3 player with 1000 Terabytes of drive space, things are not going to change for at least more than a decade.

First of all, they weren't getting beat down by Coke. They have been causing Coke headaches for a long time. Why else did Coke release new Coke? And how did that work out? Oh yeah, people knew what they desired and it couldn't be changed. The soft drink market has been relatively close for some time. Maybe you should do your own research.
And those companies you listed didn't create demand. Just because people aren't yelling for bottled water doesn't mean they wouldn't like it. You have to realise a possibility before you can want it, nobody had thought of it before. Pepsi didn't sa, "Hey, let's spend tons of money trying to invent desire for botteled water when supposedly we're getting our buts kicked in the creating desire for soda market." No. Soft drink co. are always trying to find new beverages to sell and so someone decided to try water. They market tested it to see how it would be recieved. Why would they do that if they create desire? WHy would they test to see if there is any out there? You should do research, you should learn how companies work.
