Looks like a game that everyone ranks highly because they want to seem "deep" to others.

Multiple pc gamers in this thread complained about price and claimed they will wait for it to drop to $1-5 in a steam sale.
People like you are killing the industry. You are lucky console gamers actually buy games at full price otherwise you guys would never get most games.
The witness looks awesome and I will be supporting the PS4 version.
Looks like a game that everyone ranks highly because they want to seem "deep" to others.
Or maybe everyone's ranking it highly because, I don't know, it's a really good game?
I bought it for just around $20 on Steam (regional price). :P Buying it early means it's going to be hard to cheat by researching the net. I admit I do that when a puzzle really frustrates me (I'm looking at you Layton). Jonathan Blow's talks are very good and even eye-opening for game developers. No doubt he has a strong will in his own ideas and perspectives.
@stuff238: This behavior is not isolated to PC gamers as far as I can tell. Myself I do my best to support the games I want on day 1, I have my reasons. But I routinely see console gamers on this site state they never buy on day 1, and wait for the sales. I seem to actually remember a thread recently where numerous console gamers proclaimed they never pay full price for a game.
I certainly agree that day 1 buyers have a great importance in the industry, however it is ultimately the consumer's prerogative to buy a product later on sale, so I cannot fault people for that....just my 2 cents
$40 seems like a lot. I felt I splurge on Soma at $30 and that felt unnecessarily high after I finished it. I'll wait until this is $20. It's hard to tell when a game is legitimately good or if it's just the typical zealousness of the Sony mob at work making things bigger and better sounding than they really are. I'd rather make a value purchase of the various modestly priced indie games that have released recently and also those set to release soon.

It may be but it's got that vibe going on with all the reviews so far.
It's like how people talk about Quinoa.
But how are the actual puzzles?
It's a pretty gosh-darn big red flag when a game scores extremely well with mainstream reviewers and those reviewers barely talk at all about the gameplay.
Yeah, a game getting great reviews is a huge red flag.

Fallout 4 throws that logic out the window.
Its a PS4 win because it is not on XBOX.
So Recore, Sea of Thieves, Gears of War:UE, Halo Wars, Fable Legends, etc.. are an XB1 win because they aren't on the PS4? Good to know.

This game looks boring af
Well, if you liked Myst or any of those other wonder around and solve a puzzle game, then you'll probably like The Witness.
If you guys have PlayStation plus im sure its a lil cheap. Its apparently worth the money. If gs score means anything.
Play Braid first, not saying don't buy The Witness, but I would say try that game first before you pony up for one of his puzzle games. This way you have an idea of how his design process is, and how he's going to tell his stories (smug as **** btw)
I like the Talos Principle, I would also say a puzzle game being that long, wasn't necessarily the best thing (not the same dev, but a puzzle game, I would argue might be one of the more difficult genres to do for that long).

Have you played Braid?
Also that same review said the following ""Temptation to look up difficult puzzle solutions"" as a con, now I know that con list doesn't actually impact the reviews, but still. It gives you an idea of gamers. Scum of the earth.
A puzzle game? lmfao
This is why i dont take reviews seriously.. i know those type of games are enjoyable to many gamers but do not look fun to me
What's wrong with puzzle games? A puzzle is one of the most elementary facets of a game.
I think a genre deserving of more scrutiny are RPGs.

I'm a Braidiac...okay Braid fans are not called Braidiacs but they bloody well should be.
The manhattan project stuff, the walls of texts: a snooze fest. Still, I was won over by the twist on the save the princess moment and the challenging puzzles. I even cobbled together my own soundtrack for the game. I will probably regret it later when I'm banging my skull into drywall but I shall witness The Witness.
I'm not sure about this game myself. It looks very well made but I dunno how much I'll personally enjoy it. So $40 is a bit much for me to get it day one, I've often gotten bored with puzzles.

The smugness of it is whatever, but I do think that story is actually well handled in the sense that thematically it worked start to finish, especially with the ending. It wasn't some opinion on war and nukes, it was more about obsession, and yeah those puzzles are fucking fantastic, outside of Spacechem, nothing else truly competes with Braid for me in that genre.
The game looks overrated as hell, seriously watching the video review it's like why in the hell did the game even score above a 7. It looks like every puzzle is the same except different layouts/routes.

Appearances can be deceiving. You have to play it to understand. I know this generation of "gamers" thrive on youtube and let's plays and twitch. I suggest actually playing the game before judging it. It's a crazy concept, I know.

Or you can just watch the gamespot/ign video review and realize what you see is literally 60% of the game which is solve maze puzzle-explore-solve maze puzzle-explore-find something cool-solve maze puzzle-explore then rinse and repeat tell you beat the game /shrug.
At least games like Soma spice shit up unlike the Witness.
It looks like "The Witness" doesn't have enough slo-mo explosions or headshots for some of the weak-minded fanboys here at SW.

From your assessment you clearly don't understand the game and have not played it. So your baseless opinion is null and void.

How dare this puzzle game have puzzles.

It still puzzles me why people don't knock on Professor Layton games for having puzzles that have no relevance to the game world and the story. And yet they complain about it on The Witness where the puzzles at least have some connection/relevance to the game world (I'm still an hour in).

It's a puzzle game, a thinking person's genre, it's going to naturally be wasted on the idiots on this forum.

Yea cause clearly there's more than the typical "maze" puzzle in The Witness...oh wait, clearly you're full of shit as usual cause you literally didn't even try to prove me wrong besides "herp derp you're wrong you're opinion is null and void derp".
No seriously prove me wrong that the game is more than solve maze puzzle-explore a little-solve maze puzzle-explore a little-solve maze puzzle, rinse and repeat tell the game is "done". Seriously prove to me that's there more to this game than those two things cause if ANY OTHER game just had two things going for it, I can tell you that shit wouldn't fly if reviewers gave that game a 9 or 10.

The best games introduce a simple element and then expand on that. Using level variety, weapon variety, item variety, to add additional challenge to the once simple gameplay element. The best of every genre relies on this basic concept. From shooters to platformers to puzzle games. If you're seriously asking the witness to add a shooting section or platforming section to change up the gameplay then I cannot help you further.
What the game does do is change up the puzzle elements, variety, and challenge as you journey deeper into the game. The worst games are often the ones that are jack of all trades, master of none. They do too many things and do none of them well. So I don't think you know what you're asking for because nobody ever wanted the first Halo to "change up" what it did best. Only that it add a variety of enemies and levels to diversify the initial challenge to the gamer.
Then again I'm wasting my precious brain power on you when I should be directing it toward puzzles in The Witness. You've already made up your mind. And the worst thing of all, you're chastising a puzzle game for being only a puzzle game. Think about that for a minute. Maybe thinking isn't your forte.
