With the recent announcement of Star Ocean 4, for the Playstation 3, It finally became clear that the absolute edge in the genre is indeed going to be on The Playstation 3, not only the system is about to get two of the most important top rated japanese rpgs of this gen being tales of vesperia and Star Ocean 4. But the Ps3 is getting the best versions of them with extra characters, boss fights, both voice overs and side quests. It happened before with a highly overlooked game called Eternal Sonata which is now also on the Ps3 with extra.
Why is this so relevant. Because the Playstation Brand has always been synonymous of japanese rpgs and has always dominated the genre with some of the best exclusives for years, and now some people really tried to convince the public that a foreign console was taking over as the new JRPG KING... over the Successor of the Ps2.
Lets take a deep breath here for a second, this generation the japanese rpgs have sold rather poorly, regardless of which platform they're released for, except for the biggest names. FF, DQ, MH etc. That brings developers the need to make this games multiplatform, If they want to make money it has become the only way and thus all of this former 360 exclusives have now been confirmed for the Ps3 but... Stop right there for a second and thing to yourself, Ps3 owners lost Final Fantasy XIII how come they can have the absolute edge in JRPGs, well If the Xbox360 lost all those games but not only as exclusives, they also lost the possibility to gain access to all the extras demanded by sony as an apology for the late release and as a matter of fact, one by one the Ps3 keeps getting many different flavors of japanese RPGs some of them may be not traditional and others entirely niche, however one way or another they remain exclusive.
Ps3 got Disgaea III and it stayed there, Ps3 got White Knight and it stayed there, The Ps3 got Valkyria Chronicles and it never went Multiplatform. We have now the upcoming releases of The Last Rebellion, Trinity Universe, Demon's Souls. Plus some of the biggest RPGs the 360 had. The Library of exclusive RPGs for the Ps3 grows steadily and surely despite the loss of FFXIII, but not only that still to date, the Full current generation FF experience consists of 3 games XIII, XIII Versus and newly announced in Last Year's E3 (By Sony) Final Fantasy XIV, Which is an MMOJRPG. Even with the Loss of XIII the Ps3 is still by far ahead in terms of quality RPGS.
FROM KOTAKUTALES OF VESPERIA RAGE.
Imagine that you don't own an Xbox 360. Maybe, you don't even want one. But then a game comes out on it, a game you really want, and it's an exclusive.
To play it, well, you'd probably buy the console, take your "Only On Xbox 360" game home and play the crap outta it. Then imagine several months later, that same game emerged once again, like a Phoenix from the flames, and was appearing on another console — with more story, new characters, the works! How would you feel?
Bamboozled! Pissed off! Mad! Nerd rage has been directed at Bandai Namco's Tales of Vesperia, which was an Xbox 360 exclusive. That is, until it decided to appear on the PS3 with brand new shiny stuff.
I am here to say this flat out, the Xbox 360 is not the JRPG king of this gen, it had its best moments last year but now that has come to an end. Just like the Japanese did with their copies of TOV for the Xbox360, the delusional myth of the 360 being the JRPG king of this gen, just let it burn.
