Well, you said that Move didn't do full body tracking, and he showed that it does. You didn't specify that anyone would enjoy it :P. I think all Kinect has (physically) that Move doesn't is the extra infrared camera to track depth, the rest is just software differences.

not even close to the same thing, the game tracks the outline of your body, thats why he punches and kicks to the side, because the camera wouldnt be able to see you punch forward, on kinect you can. 2D is a big difference between 3D

And that difference is never going to be used for Kinect in a significant manner meaning that all games done on Kinect can be done on the EyeToy or with Move.

The only really interesting thing about move is that it's a pseudo mouse IMO. At least the thing looks like it could have certain uses over a normal controller (as in games where a mouse would have been handy).

As for Kinect, it has yet to shown any kind of use or function that I would personally deem worthwhile. In fact, the most "core" things I've seen on Kinect have more been matters of forcing the scheme upon the content than improving experiences.

Keep up all the can and can't do talk, I'll reserve my judgement.

  • No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise
  • R.U.S.E.
  • Dead Space: Extraction
  • Infamous 2
  • Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

Things Kinect can do that Move can't:

  • Dance Central

  • Deca Sports Freedom
  • MotionSports
  • EA Sports Active 2.0*
  • Your Shape: Fitness Evolved

You should see the list of things the Wii can do that neither of them can.

well kinect works with a controller so all the move titles would work with a kinect peripheral

Kinect is way more appealing than move, simply because it's different. I'm not saying it's going to be good or bad, but I'm hoping for the former. At least MS is thinking outside the box. For that alone we should be praising them.musicalmac

The playstation eye can do full body tracking. Ever heard of a game called Kung Fu Live coming out on PSN?

Kung Fu Live

Didn't that pretty much ended the thread? Kinect can't do much mor ethan the PS Eye, there's no real reason for 3D tracking (and move can do it anyway) and infrared is just wasted money :S

Do you think the things move cant do but kinect can will be a big selling point?? Kinect can track the full body motion of your body. So you can kick but you cant kick with your feet on move.Pretty much anything dealing with your full body, move cant do. Anything move can do but kinect cant, can be done on the controller of 360. Only thing useful that youcan do on moveis maybe golf, but you can do that on kinect probably with better because of full body movement tracking. Pretty much what im interested in using kinect for you cant do that on move.

kinect can make you look like a douche bag more than a motion cotroller can... i mean seriously kinect just looks stupid,im not even a fan of the move tho. if i wanna wail around while i play a video game ill play DDR

A controller dont make you look less stupid. All people see when your playing with a controller is pushing buttons. Atleast with kinect you up and out of your chair. President would think that makes you look smarter and more in touch with reality.

The problem is exactly the 3d tracking, it simply doesn't work the way MS is trying to sell, and so in the real world, what the hardware actually does only allows for devs to make little less then what you see on PSeye and Eyetoy games. Theres a saying in the military, keep it simple and stupid, PSeye/Eyetoy works because its simple, MS tried to take a step larger than its legs and it just failed. Saying things like "this is something completely new, its gaming with no controller" or all the acting even the voice recognition its something that has been done on the PS2 already. In short, not only it does nothing new, it can even keep up to the promises...

It checks for pixel changes. Not full body movement.

dude who cares how it tracks the full body movement? (because it does, even if its made through tracking change of pixels duh!) the thing is that it can do it

I've never heard of that game until just now. It's an PSN game ($15?) that uses nothing but the PS eye and honestly, it looks pretty fun. It also appears to be lag-free.

Check out the demo on gamespot.

the eye just looks for changes in pixels, something webcams have been doing for around 15 years. Kinect uses infrared sensors that allows it to see in 3D

I love this post. Totally true, they're different control formats. One's got an analog knob, a pointer, BUTTONS (important); The other's got a full body scanner that tracks motion in 3 dimensional space. When you need active full body movement in a closed space, Kinect will do things you can't replicate with Move. When you need to run around with an avatar or play a shooting game? Realistically, only on Move. The short story though is shinrabanshou's post in its entirety, I just had to post all that to avoid moderation for giving a +props.

Kinect will be more significant with interface rather than games. I can see Kinect technology incorporated into laptop web cameras, web cams, and other devices for MS.

So basically many functions we perform with mouse and keyboard will be transferred to eye tracking. Hand and body motions are just the first step. When they can track eye movements, navigating a computer becomes faster and easier than ever conceived.

Dire_Weasel

Kinect can do eye tracking now?

That's a rhetorical question: of course it can't. It looks like the fanboys still believe Kinect is going to make them into Tom Cruise in Minority Report.

Nope. I was talking about future iterations and applications of the technology. Please don't jump to conclusions.

But what would the point be? short keys and a mouse is way more efficient than "Kinect" for laptops would be. Even if the "mouse" was actually a touch pad.

Think about instantly logging in because your specific eye works better than a password. Lets say you have multiple windows up in your monitor, instead of having to click the specific window you look at it and immediately start doing actions in the window you are looking at (this may sound extremely trivial but little things like that could seriously speed up the process). The freedom of being able to control your computer as long as you are somewhat near it is a big deal. This shatters barriers for casual users. SO many functions that Kinect technology will use, will be able to streamline computers even more for inexperienced users. When the basic person can do much more with computers due to new tools, advanced users range of tools exponentially increase. Before the mouse, everyone used qwerty and many people scoffed at the idea of the mouse.

What if you have an itch? You go and screw things up.

The non gaming applications for Kinect are great, that's where MS should focus its marketing about, but what is really happening is that " you are the controller" and " motion free gaming" are taking the biggest part of the campain.

This. The kinect is pretty cool when it comes tothings likenavigating the dashboard, but the games honestly don't look too great except for Dance Central, IMO.

I don't even see that. What makes moving your arm around to navigate menu's better than pushing a button? When I turn the volume up on my TV do I want to just push the button on the remote or do I want to wave my arm up and down. That's the difference we are talking about.

Another thing kinect has is the inability to work in the average household! Weeee!

To use kinect, you need a few feet of clear space and a mostly white room. Yippee! Everyone has that in their homes.

[QUOTE="thedude-"]Think about instantly logging in because your specific eye works better than a password. Before the mouse, everyone used qwerty and many people scoffed at the idea of the mouse.thedude-

Your idea with eyes is incredibly impractical.

And these days little kids are apt with computers.

Voice controls if voice recognition stops sucking and natural language processing improves will be useful. And touch UIs will become even more prevalent too I imagine.

But unless technology develops to a stage where it's actually like Minority Report and not PR nonsense, and it's cheap, efficient and effective, the mouse and keyboard aren't going anywhere fast.

And no one said they were going anywhere. It would be incorporated into the control. Voice recognition is also very viable as we get better at noise cancellation. A computer that can track body and eye movements, have a touch screen UI, mouse/keyboard, voice recognition, and 3d display is the foundation for holographic input and output.

The problem with voice recognition isn't noise discrimination; it's the fact that speech is itself rather imprecise: not just in semantics (how does a computer tell the difference between "Recognize speech" and "Wreck a nice beach") but in tone, too (as in, a program trained for Americans might stumble when a Brit or Australian speaks).

Kinect can do eye tracking now?

That's a rhetorical question: of course it can't. It looks like the fanboys still believe Kinect is going to make them into Tom Cruise in Minority Report.

Filthybastrd

Nope. I was talking about future iterations and applications of the technology. Please don't jump to conclusions.

That's fine but has nothing to do with Kinect which did'nt invent any of those techs to begin with.

No but its the building blocks. Such expensive and hard to sell tech does not become a standard by its self. Basic tracking is the first step.

[QUOTE="lightleggy"][QUOTE="slipknot0129"]It checks for pixel changes. Not full body movement.

slipknot0129

dude who cares how it tracks the full body movement? (because it does, even if its made through tracking change of pixels duh!) the thing is that it can do it

It tries but fails to do it. Kinect is the only way on consoles.

oh I see, nice trolling

[QUOTE="slipknot0129"]Kinect can track the full body motion of your body. So you can kick but you cant kick with your feet on move.Pretty much anything dealing with your full body, move cant do. CajunShooter

The playstation eye can do full body tracking. Ever heard of a game called Kung Fu Live coming out on PSN?

Kung Fu Live

The playstation eye can't see depth that is the reason it has the move contoller that has a light on the end of it.

So Move can do full body motion and depth then.

Move doesn't have controller-free Child of Eden and no Dance Central, the ONLY reasons to own Kinect! That's... something!

I bought 18 Move controllers, and have them all fastened to my body in a special jumpsuit I made.

So, yes, Move can detect the PSWands I have attached to my shoes, knees, torso, chest, elbows, buttocks, hands, and head.

Well you know what Kinect can't do? How about control things with your mind!!

Well MindFlex from Mattel allows you to do just that: MindFlex

Moving things with your mind>>>than flailing arms around.

Mindflex > Kinect?

You decide

Kinect can be less expensive than buying 4 controllers and their attachments for 2 people.

Kinect doesnt work in a dark room. Kinect doesnt work if you have a messy room or just "wrong" kind of furniture. Kinect doesnt work properly if you have loose clothes. Black people. Kinect barely works at all in perfect conditions.

With Move you can only use your hands. That's a big reason why it works better than the Kinect.

Are you forgetting the PS Eye? Who says you are limited to your hands when the camera can track your whole body.
