  • To many SKU's. Both Sony and M$ are milking the industry with all of these freaking SKU's and special addition consoles. How many damn 360's do we need? Elite? 20GB? 60GB? Arcade? Halo 3 edition? 250GB?
  • Paying for extra content that should have been included in the game in the first place.
  • Microtransactions
  • The demise of 1st party games
  • Catering to much to the casual market and not enough to the hardcore consumer
  • Mii's, Avatars, home, etc. Unessasary content that has absolutely nothing to do with gaming
  • The lost of many exclusives.

The list goes on and on............

the new models are just a way to increase sales

and as for home and avatars and stuff. they dont have anything to do with gaming. TRUE

but i like having a system that plays music movies and a ton of feature more than one that just plays games

its advance in technology bro.

Opinions are great.

I've enjoyed this gen much more than last gen, and last gen had two of my favorite games of all time. SOCOM 2 and FFX.

For me each gen since I started playing has been great. I don't care about exclusives because I usually own all systems so I can play whatever I want.

The first gen just consisted of Pong variants. I don't understand how you could possibly think this gen is worse than that.

I agree somewhat with TC. Paying for content which should have been in the game is daylight robbery. Also, a lot of good game franchises went bad like GTA (IV was kinda boring), and Half Life (the eps aren't as good).

Pong is amazing. Still one of my favorite games today. And I agree with the TC. Not a lot going on. We've also seen a rise in generic FPSs this gen. What about other genres? Why are there so few JRPGs this gen? Answer me this.

  • Paying for extra content that should have been included in the game in the first place. ok this I completely agree with.
  • Microtransactions kinda along the same line
  • The demise of 1st party games I have a wii so I'm not bothered byt that by why do you care where your great games come from?
  • Catering to much to the casual market and not enough to the hardcore consumer BS there is plenty for both
  • Mii's, Avatars, home, etc. Unessasary content that has absolutely nothing to do with gaming. once again this isnt needed to be done so why does it bother you?
  • The lost of many exclusives. Correct me if I am wrong but you still get to play the game so why does the developer that has a "I'm going to share with everybody" attitude tick you off?

The list goes on and on............

..since Sony decided to make developing so incredibly frustrating most devs opted to either keep developing for the PS2 or for the DS.

There's plenty of variety this gen. The only people complaining about a lack of variety are the fanboys who only own one console or the wanna be gamers who say "yuck" at handhelds because it's not Crysis level graphics.

For any real gamer, there's a lot of variety.

I don't share your opinion, but at least I can see the reasoning behind most of them.

But this I don't get:

-The lost of many exclusives

I fail to see how most games being multiplat makes this a bad gen. If anything, it makes it awesome.

What people fail to realize is every gen has had it's generic genres because it was popular, and every developer tried to do the same.

People only look back at the good things and never point out it's flaws. They also only look at the flaws in the present and never look at the positives.

I am a real gamer, and there isn't a lot of variety. They've practically killed off JRPGs, FPSs are becoming more and more generic, RPGs are losing the story and RP factors, and they still can't make a damn console RTS worth two cents(which is why I have a PC in the first place). The only genre I feel has improved, is Racing.

  • To many SKU's. Both Sony and M$ are milking the industry with all of these freaking SKU's and special addition consoles. How many damn 360's do we need? Elite? 20GB? 60GB? Arcade? Halo 3 edition? 250GB? Not milking because hardware isn't changing this isn't like the sega cd/32x. This is just a way to give people who haven't bought one yet an incentive(more hardware space/pack in game) to buy the system
  • Paying for extra content that should have been included in the game in the first place. I agree here games these days seem so short and lacking content
  • Microtransactions Not that big of a deal these are annoying to me as a long time gamer and consumer but hardly ruining the gen
  • The demise of 1st party games For MS maybe Sony still has a very stong linup and if it weren't for how successful the wii has been to the mainstream market Nintendo would be churning out amazing games(they still are but thei casual linup is disheartenbing when you think the resources could be used to make more "core" games)
  • Catering to much to the casual market and not enough to the hardcore consumer. Business my boy we have still had some good games sure its annoying to see them cater to the casuals but they haven't abandoned the hardcores
  • Mii's, Avatars, home, etc. Unessasary content that has absolutely nothing to do with gaming. Frivolous? yes. But has no effect on the quality of games
  • The lost of many exclusives. still lots of exlusives out there the economy and high dev costs are driving the move towards multiplat.

The list goes on and on............

CB4McGusto

while I also feel so far this gen has been underwhelming in some sense most of that is due to economics and not the systems itself just bad timing really. Technologically we have it great and with the online integration there are still oppertunities for small indie devs to take risks that the big dev houses are not really doing because of the economics of it. The gen is still only half over wait until the end to make the judgement.

Not even close. Does anyone remember the early 80s anymore? With competition between consoles driving the industry, great graphics, new stories, it's a great generation.

DLC and microtransactions I could do without.

I like that last bit, I think its cool that developers add more stuff to there games at later times. I mean its really no different then buying the old special editions of games in the past that would come with an "extra dungeon"

Nope, they are labeled so we can tell where they belong and yet his point is is till valid. If 8/10 RPG, FPS and whatnot are generic that genre in it's current state can be safely called generic.

They are labeled as such, but (most) developers strive to fit their games into a certain genre, thus defining what the game is and what you can expect from it.

you have a couple points there.like microtransactions and paying or extra content that should have been added to the original game.(ex. re5 versus). but some of those points are extremely flawed.i seriously dont see whats wrong with casual games. all its done is make games more accessible. so people like my girlfriend, and other family members can enjoy games too. and whats wrong with giving people more options for a console that they are going to spend their own hard earned money on. i think if people want bigger hard drives, or different branded consoles, then more power to them.and the thing about avatars. i personally like them.no ones makeing u pay for them, or use them.so why complain? i think this generation is perfectly fine.and im enjoying it quite a bit.

Actually there is quite a bit of genre mixing and misconceptions out there. I saw some ppl here the other day saying that to them a game like Monster Hunter is a WRPG because it doesn't really fit the JRPG style. But the game is still labeled as JRPG by most. That's more labeling that being defined by the genre really.

WRPG and JRPG aren't genres, they're just terms to help people know what location the game is from.

I was using it as an example. Another example Action-hack n slash game list thread when ppl started mentioning a lot of action games that really didn't fit the criteria. Some ppl were saying that GOW isn't HnS like the rest nd others were even including GTA because they saw the "action" label on it.

That's more labeling that being defined by the genre really.Dystopian-X

WRPG and JRPG aren't genres, they're just terms to help people know what location the game is from.

I was using it as an example. Another example Action-hack n slash game list thread when ppl started mentioning a lot of action games that really didn't fit the criteria. Some ppl were saying that GOW isn't HnS like the rest nd others were even including GTA because they saw the "action" label on it.

I think that's more of people not understanding what genres are then anything else.

Yeah that clearly is part of the case, but they do have a point as well. You see the HandS thing I noted that many ppl also bring Diablo and other RPGs as being true ones but now when most ppl when they hear hack and slash they usually think, NG or DMC that's another example of the games defining it instead.

Obviously this is the worst gen if you are a Japanophile. But for the rest of us, it's a different story.

Yeah maybe, but it has the best games in my opinion, and thats all that really matters to me. ^^b

This is by far the most casual/critical/commercial generation of gaming where "gamers" enjoy being ripped off by indistinguishable sequels. A generation where PC gaming is considered dead should not have been called a generation at all. It's more of a "retardation", if you ask me. This is by far the worst generation for anything, really. Music, movies, video games. Novelty died a long time ago in all fields.

Overall this has been a disapointing gen for me, but the DS makes up where all the others lack in games and variety of games. It would be nice to have a console with games as good as the DS but obviously larger scale.
