I think commercialism pervades Western game development, and I suppose in the end it probably should, whereas Japanese games appear to elicit more pride from their creators. You're right; they don't release buggy or unpolished games nearly as often. The other thing is, the Eastern gaming tradition simply has a different appeal to a different crowd. You see it in their art, their narratives, and their generally crappy in a charming way translations. I prefer Eastern developed games; but I think it's a cultural thing.
i love japanese games (is it because im asian?). western games are always about violence, fps, tps, blood, gore. i mean, where can you see a game like Katamari, Mario Galaxy, Metal Gear? eastern games always want to be photorealistic, physics-based, sci-fi, futuristic, graphics whore, etc. i mean, japanese games combine fantasy/mafic or whatever with graphics, but somehow western games always go with reality when it comes to graphics. also, we all know that japanese studios and developers are not (and i use the term loosely) 'restricted' by their publishers. i just can't picture EA telling their developer studios to make a game that has a great concept and sales isn't that important. lmao.

Kameo is no where near as atmospheric as Japanese games (and yeah i know let the screenshots begin but that's the truth. The other games, though still not as atmospheric, were under Japanese surveillance so i don't think they count. Personally i would say japanese games are more atmospheric. Because American games tend to target only 4 styles for the most part: Futuristic Sci-fi, medieval wats, agents (FBI and stuff like that), And modern wars. Of course you do have games like GTA which felt pretty atmospherical to me (and i can't believe i'm saying that), But still, if you're not a fan of the four types stated above, well.... tough luck i guess :PKameo is no where near as atmospheric as Japanese games (and yeah i know let the screenshots begin but that's the truth. nintendo-4lifeActually it's an opinion, and i strongly disagree with it

Please do not put Kameo and the new Banjo Kazooie in the same space as Ratchet, Jak and Mario. Those feeble Rare efforts are nowhere near up to there quality, and are testament to how far down the tubes that Rare has gone since it's N64 heyday. I don't care what Ratchet scored here, the game is a gem and scored well almost everywhere else (I believe around 90% on metacritic), so GS's score was ridiculous and proves this site is not the pinnacle of gaming scores. Ratchet should have scored a high 8 to 9 here, and after finishing Kameo (under some sufference towards the end), I would say the game is a 7-7.5 max, as it had awesome graphics, but stiff, limited controls and gameplay. I played Banjo at a game store booth and it was tediously boring, and not a poo stain compared to original. PDZ getting a 9 is testament to GS's former scoring.....as GS's score puts it up with the calibre of Halo and Killzone 2........when in reality the game is more around Haze's quality. And Splinter Cell is the perfect example of a western developer trying to copy a Jpn developers concept, by trying to make the graphics and game play too realistic, but ruining it in the process because of the slowness and boringness of the gameplay. MGS and it's developers just know how to balance realism with fun. And SpinoRap, I do not think certain 360 games are inferior....in fact, I love Dead Rising (oops Japanese developer), ok, I love Left 4 Dead, GeOW and a few select others.... So the machine has good games (other wise I wouldn't have one) but they are really only at the top of there game when it comes to shooters, which are heavily Western developed games.[QUOTE="bingbaocao"][QUOTE="Harry_Balzac"] Please do not put Kameo and the new Banjo Kazooie in the same space as Ratchet, Jak and Mario.
