I think what he means is a tightly integrated system that can be managed only by Microsoft. In other words, no flexability and developers have to follow exactly what guidelines MS has layed out or they can't be a part of Live.

dream431ca

Yup. Thankfully for us, Microsoft has done an excellent job managing it and keeping it smooth and simple for us to use.

I have the 360 and the ps3 so making an objecitve comparison of online features and performance....I would pay for xbox live any day of the century over free psn.... I wanna like the ps3, believe me I do...I really really do...I don't care about specs or tech or future potential...show me something I can sink my teeth into...360 does that for me

[QUOTE="yoyo462001"]no Pc does not, XBL is far better than anything on the PC and this is coming from a PC gamer, Pc you need Vent or teamspeak in most instances.UnnDunn

No, last time I checked I just connected my mic and talked to my teammates in L4D.

In L4D, sure. But what about other games, from developers who can't afford to build in voice support?

On XBL EVERY game has voice. No Teamspeak required.

That's why there's Ventrillo.

What if I just want to play online for fun... I don't need stats or mics, I don't care of Live service right to left... I simply just want to play for fun. What options do I have?

Is ventrilo free? I know the program is free, but to have your own server costs money, right? I really don't know, and am not trying to argue your point.

An application to setup a virtual match that will be hosted by the players themselves, collect stats on the matches and store them in database including security check this is a job for one person in a month. Even if this service is used concurrently by 1M players, the amount of data passing is extremely small you could still run this in a couple simple servers with 4GB of memory each plus a single database server would probably handle it, as long as you don't do it in Ruby on Rails, Grails or bloated stuff like that. Their web services are probably in .net witch is pretty efficient and scales well.

As a web developer, I believe those features are simple, not massive and cost them one tenth all the money they collect. I've only oversaw a few web projects with web services, but from my experience, the features your proposing are not complex or a big deal at all. As a comparison, WoW servers which actually host the virtual world are said to be on 50+ servers throughout the world.

You dedicated 2 entire paragraphs for encryption and handshaking? This is trivial work. Perhaps you could provide sources for your info or are you affirming it based on your experience in web development?

If you don't want Live, don't buy an Xbox. Simple. But that has nothing to do with whether XBL is worth it or not. XBL is worth it. It's a great service for a low price.

I did say it was an oversimplification. There is FAR MORE going on behind the scenes at XBL than my little scenario depicts. There's an e-commerce platform, content distribution, localization, video streaming, Voice/video over IP and on and on. That all has to be managed so that it works with 99.9% uptime across nearly two-dozen countries. Then there's the continued feature development and testing that goes on. XBL is a global data network every bit as robust and available as, say, the networks operated by Visa and AMEX to track your credit card transactions. That is FAR from trivial work.

Microsoft official CDN is Akamai if I'm not outdated and they handle all content distribution and streaming. Voice and Video over IP is P2P, client to client, their servers have little to no work involved. Localization and having a decent uptime is so ridiculously easy it doesn't even deserve mentioning. E-commerce is a little complex I'll give you that but even that is mostly handled by CC companies services, you only store a few numbers of the CC for audit purposes. New development and testing I can't comment. I don't know what they are cooking... i'll say 3 developers working for a month to do that, and the same infra. If they are developing this in US, then probably they need all that money to pay all this people's salary, all 3 of them.

Then why don't you get together with a couple of friends and build an XBL competitor? I'll expect to play games on it... let's say by September. That should give you plenty of time (since you claim it will only take a month.)

If you can do that, I'll even subscribe to your service for $50/mo.

I already have a job. Thanks. Besides I think there's too much competition on the gamming market already, It won't even sustain itself for long.

I don't see how that justifies the price. I don't care how complex the system is when it works. The bottom line is, I can play online for free on the PC and ps3, and not on the 360.

Don't defend an online service that is failing you as a gamer.

I'll use that additional 50 dollars a year to pick up an additional game, thank you very much.

its really silly

they can afford a $400 console, a bunch of overpriced accesories, stacks of $60 games, a $2000 High Def TV - but a dollar per week for an unparalleled integrated online service spawns 400 threads a day in outrage.

i wouldn't want xbox to dumb down it's features to playstation levels, to save me a dollar a week.

and guys i think the sales clearly speak for itself - theres a lot of people who don't have an issue

Is it just me, or have there been too many "XBL is/isn't worth the money" threads lately? What's up with that?

killerfist

This, it's sickening really. Like it, pay. Don't like it, don't pay. Simple as that.

I agree it's sickening but it isn't as simple as that. By that logic we can end system wars right here. Dont like a system, don't buy.

Saying it's only $50 doesn't justify anything. We should all be mad that XBL is free on the PC. Regardless that it had only a hand full of games, it's proving that the service can be free. But still you create these posts defending the price.

OR - you can P2P and host it yourself

I'm not saying that the P2P connection costs money - im saying all the xbox marketplace stuff, and all the graphics that appear on screen instantaneously are all streamed online through microsoft, and cost money

xbox does use dedicated servers - just not always for the connections in between players in a game

all the guide features and marketplace stuff and xbox U.I would suck without the dedicated servers

you think you can download a 1.5 Gigabyte game demo in 10 minutes without dedicated servers? Or stream HD content?

BobSacamento

Dedicated servers for games... why do you think they pay a high fee?

Funny Steam is free and I can download as fast as my connection alows it... and that's 1Meg/s.

steam isnt going to charge people so that they can pay valve money

but those dedicated servers cost moola

are you guys saying that it doesnt cost MS anything? theres nothing that warrants money and we're all paying $50 a year for nothing?

What you said in red, I don't understand...

I buy games from Steam and Steam was free... ain't that what you're doing on XBL but with $50... since it's dedicated server... dedicated game server are also free from Valve...

Hey, what do you think all thoses adds are for? Money???

Here's the thing I don't get... If Xbox Live is so awful, how come it won an Emmy award for Outstanding Achievement in Multiplayer-Backend Console Game Technology? If PSN is just as good as XBL but FREE!, where is PSN's Emmy award? Bear in mind this Emmy was for Xbox Live onthe ORIGINAL Xbox, which has since been radically improved on the 360.

So what's the deal, guys? Where's PSN's award?

the way pc is is set up the game dev host a master server that gathers all the games people host and put's it in a list for you to view and join.

the servers themselves are hosted by people at home unless they paying for company to run dedicated server for their clan or something.

i can go online right now and play madden 06 if i want

on ps3, EA will have shut down the servers - and that is no longer an option

also, just as a little side note - paying money means they have to constantly update it and improve it

theres no reason to on playstation, take what they give you

I'm not saying it's a bad service, it's great. I'm saying there is no reason this service should cost money.

Nobody said it was awfull... but charging you because you simple want to play VS other players. I taught buying the game full price was enough, but no, now I have to play extra fees... to "unlock" that feature.

see pc games dev's only host the master servers which is the in game server/game list that shows you all the games in progress, even if dev's shut down master server you can still play online if you know the ip addresses of the dedicated servers running, just the server list wont work.

pc games the servers are hosted by end users.

I wasn't talking about the ads, just how it connects all my game information and integrates friends and videos and blah blah

and for the part in red - im saying that steam is an online retailer, where people go and buy things from them, and they make money

steam isnt going to charge me $10 for the dedicated servers they use - so that i can go and pay them money to download stuff

it would be like wal mart charging me to enter the store

get it lol

I thought EA shut down online play for it's previous games? Even Xbox games.
