Also, I didn't mention this before, but the lack of World in Conflict, God of War 2, and Burning Crusade leaves a GAPING hole in this list.

Add that to the fact that this list is basically just a hype meter, and we've got a failed list. There is no surprise game, like Zack and Wiki, or Contr 4, Planet Puzzle League, etc. There were a ton of great games this year that just didn't get a whole lot of recognition. This list is not very good.

The only thing I found surprising was Mass Effect, given that the only casual RPG's either have Mario in them or are Pokemon, and RPG's are about as casual a genre as are RTS's.

Halo 3 as GOTY? Hardly... I'd have taken COD4 over Halo 3, at least it was somewhat innovative. Of course, Super Mario Galaxy still deserved to top that list. :P

Both Orange box and SMG should have been above Halo 3. Where is Crysis? Why is AC6 in there?

Pretty much disagree wtih most of that list tbh.

JiveT

No onecares about Crysis outside of the people who post the specs of their "rig" in their sig or constantly debate the merits of various species of RAM.

Nobody cares about your "Expansions Dont Count" BS yet you insist on existing.

lol I was thinking of changing this sig but I see it still has a great impact rotfl

Nope no impact, failed by poll every time. But its the same as those that annoy you with system specs ;)

Really? Is that why there were so many graphics comparison threads about it? Is that why there were so many threads about it being ported to consoles?

What DV said is true, TIME is entitled to its opinions as much as i am to mine. However, IMO, a game that made such a step forward in graphics and physics certainly deserves recognition, more so than some of the games in that list.

Lol, the good old Halo hate. I agree completely with that list, except maybe they should have put a PS3 game. Maybe Uncharted? Instead of Ace Combat, that's weird.

Absolutely obliterated, pooped on, and stomped everyone else when it comes to software. Who else remembers Cows saying 2007 would be the year of the PS3? and now they're saying it about 08 and 09.

[QUOTE="Number_1_Gamer"]Halo 3, the most casual game of the year as #1? LOL.kevy619

Are you kidding me? Look how well it's sold. We all know there are way more casuals, and casual games sell way better than hardcore games. Look how well Madden and Guitar Hero sell every year. The casuals slop those games up like gravy with a biscuit.

How is Halo 3 the MOST casual game of the year.

Guitar Hero is not "casual." That game is harder than 99.9% of games that are out there right now. Not just anyone can play that game.

TIME isn't a gaming magazine, its a magazine that show cases relevant moments in history. And the games in the list wererelevant in that year. And there were no PS3 exclusives relevant for that year. Simple as that really.

ace combat 6 was relevant? I beg to differ, uncharted OR ratchet and clank should definitely have been up there over ace combat, the rest of the games on the list are solid though.

Most of that list just reminds me of how casualized this gen is going to be. It just really sucks when a genre defining game like Crysis (which also sets the bar for graphics btw) is totally ignored by casual media outlets. And I like how HL2 was ignored by most people until this year, what a joke the gaming world is becoming.

Are you kidding? The GH series is uber-casual. Loads and loads of people who never play video games, or haven't played games in years, sop it up. The casuals LOVE GH. GH, Madden, Halo - those are the three series that casuals LOVE more than anything else. Many of them ONLY play those games, pretty much.

And I'm saying Time is not qualified to give their "expert" opinion on the matter. Yes the article writer has a right to his opinion, fine, but as far as the credibility of the list goes and Time's credibility in relation to the games industry; they don't have any.

Like many others have stated it's a list of all the big games that is all. Their criteria on "impact" on the games industry is also baffling. Explain to me what impact Orange Box had this year? It was a great game, I have it, but half the games came out over a year ago and sales wise it isn't exactly a best seller.

And what impact has AC6 had???

Its a niche only because so few people can actually run the game.

Ya but actually the sales of crysis isnt much a botherration with crytek cuz they will be sharing the sales of the 9 series cards with nvidia.;)

Or Halo , or CoD4, all graphical rehashes of top brand names... nothing more.

Problem is people will take TIME seriously.

This industry is so undeveloped it 100% relies on marketing to TELL peopel what to buy, I hate to be on a high horse but im glad I think for myself as apposed to the gaming industry masses...

If you're going to call "hardcore" games ones which only "real" gamers know about, play, and love, then you would definitely be right.

To me, I don't think someone needs to game for 30 hours a week to be a "hardcore." Just like someone doesn't need to run 6 days a week to be fast - they are just born with it.

Difficulty does factor into whether a game is casual or not. Do casuals play GH? Yes. Absolutely. Do casuals master GH? No. If you have taken the time and you are good enough to master GH, you are NOT a casual.

WoW is full of casuals. BF2 is full of casuals. CS: S is full of casuals. Casuals are everywhere.

Games are not a relevant part of history. Aside from maybe a boost in electronics sales and game engines used in military training, no one is going to look back on someone who was a great Halo player and say "Wow, because he had fps skills he is a great figure in history". Movies have more relevance in history than games do at this point, hell grunge music has more relevance at this point.

The fact is that games are still viewed as toys for children, no matter how bloody and brutal they get. We know this isn't true but unless there is some gen where the holy grail of gaming is revealed and causes massive trends and economic movements.

Also, if you're going to use Time for ownage go somewhere else, it's like NYT game reviews and CNN reports on failing consoles. No one takes it seriously here.

yea well...it's impossible to disagree at this point in the year. Lair, Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter 5 (PS3) and Heavenly Sword all failed to deliver the AAA-ness. I'm thinking maybe that discouraged the cows by the time Uncharted and Ratchet launched, because people didn't buy them.

Marketing.

Halo 3 in America had the largest, most hyped marketing campaign of any video game ever.Yet Halo 3is standard, been there, done that FPS that does nothing to move gaming forward.

Everything Halo does has been done by games available on the PC.......years ago.

This is a list of games that had the most impact and produced the most joy for the most people. It's kind of sad everyone think their little niche corner of the market (hermits) or failure of a system (cows) should somehow place more prominently than these games which defined the year.JiveT

I don't know if you like playing games, but video games are relevant in history. Thats like saying Pong wasn't relevant in history. None of this would've existed if games weren't relevant.

first off...pong wasnt even the first game....

and he is right...compared to everything else, gaming has had no impact on history what so ever.

I love these lists. Last time I checked it was still 2007. These publications like Time are cutting off their lists or making pure guesses in November and earlier so they can get their article out which is ridiculous. What happened to waiting until January for the best games of 2007?

"This list is for people who don't know or care about the games industry, and the list is based off of well-known names that will be easily recognized."

Said by someone on the TIME comments, and hes totally right.

Then again im done with this crap, I would hate to be a casual that has to read this and believe its accurate, sad sad marketing, non gaming devoted sites/magazines/awards should just stay away.

Meu2k7

God forbid that casuals have a voice in gaming. I mean its not likey make up the majority of the market or anything.....If you want a gaming industry that can pump out major titles for you to enjoy. Casuals money = more production......

If TIME wants to review games and make a GOTY list, let them, personally I take it as a sign that gaming is now a major entertainment form and not some nerd hobby you all wish it was.

Sorry but I was once casual and I know how it works, I wouldnt try a rang eof games, I would jump at one and think it was the best thing ever ... until you know ... I branched out... everyone starts that way.

Marketing just pushes people into it, while many great games go by unoticed.
