@goldenelementxl: Not that I completely disagree with you but regarding what you've said about some shows not being possible to make nowadays I tend to disagree. Generally speaking sketch comedy is dead, and that's nothing to do with "wokeness" or whatever. While simultaneously you have Netflix paying millions for Chappelle's shitty 1h comedy special which is anything but "woke".

There's this weird dynamic going on, particularly among comedians which consists on them making millions on "punch down" comedy while crying about being oppressed. Rogan being a good example too, for someone so oppressed it's a miracle that he's the highest paid podcaster in the world. The culture wars are very profitable.

There's no doubt two opposite vocal minorities, those who call everything "woke" and those who are "woke". But I honestly don't remember woke people having such a toxic response to something like the anti-woke regularly have. Tlou2 being probably the biggest shitstorm I've witnessed when it comes to abuse thrown at creators based in their creative choices. Maybe outside gaming the roles are reversed, I have no idea, but in our hobby that's not even close.

To me personally it's all about the quality of the writing. If you're going to touch sensible themes you better write your ass off, no excuses for lazy punch down shit. For example Louis CK is one of my favourite comedians ever, totally not woke, but his writing is near flawless. On the other hand Chappelle's last specials are gutter trash.

@kathaariancode: I'd say what you consider as "punch down" comedy was pretty much 99% of the best comedy prior to about 2010.

Guys that you consider "punching down" today are just doing what most comedy legends were doing before. You have a handful of comedians that are refusing to change with "the times" they get the most traction.

No reason to censor yourself to appease a loud vocal minority. It's comedy. It's not meant to be taken to heart.

@kathaariancode: Oh, I don’t disagree with what you’re saying. The dynamic is all messed up right now. But I do disagree regarding comedians “punching down.” That would require them to come from a place of superiority. They are doing what they always have. Some might even say standup is far more tame than it’s ever been. The problem is that EVERYTHING is political these days. We saw Fox News grab on to some of Chappelle‘s content as if he was some sort of conservative ally. Comedians are telling jokes to get laughs. Fox News is trying to cater to the conservative cult. They are two very different things that are being lumped together for the sake of convenience. Netflix pays Dave all that money because they see the sub spikes and viewership numbers his specials bring. Same with TLOU2. There was a shitstorm on the internet, sure. What did it amount to? The game sold 10 million copies… The majority of folks don’t care about cancel culture OR being “woke.” That’s what folks like Joe Rogan need to understand.

Speaking of Joe Rogan. I remember a ResetEra thread about him a couple years ago. I think it was about trans women competing in sports if I remember correctly. The thread had a clip that made him seem like a wild dude. I had a long drive ahead of me, and the episode had a guest that I liked so I checked it out. Listening to the entire episode completely changed the meaning and impact of the clip. His podcast is from a perspective of friends talking shit. Rogan isn’t a CNN anchor. But he’s also not some Trump loving conservative. Joe Rogan is a meathead, gun loving, free speech advocate that should otherwise be labeled as one of the most liberal voices in mainstream media. He’s the perfect example of how both political sides of the spectrum try to manipulate things to fit their agenda. You had CNN putting filters on his videos to make him look yellow when he had Covid, and then Fox News using his clips out of context to make him seem antivax (as did CNN to fit their side). Its WILD what the media gets away with. And sure, Rogan could have cleaned his act to better fit the role of the most popular podcaster in the planet. But he says he won’t do it because that’s not what got him there.

Louis CK is one of my favorites too. But make no mistake, people wanted him gone. And he came out firing with his last special. He does the “anti cancel culture“ stuff that others like Chappelle do, but Louis does it in a much more creative and hilarious way. Not too many comedians have the balls and skill to pull off what he’s doing right now.

It is funny reading how offended some are over the concept of the jokes not being belittling of groups. That is some really messed up shit.

"The world is in a mess because I can't insult and disrespect certain groups under the guise of a joke anymore. "🙄

Jokes aren't immediately insulting and disrespectful, we have to be able to poke fun at our differences and laugh at each other. It would be nice to live in a world where people could grow thicker skins and be secure enough to laugh at themselves as well at each other instead of legislating and mandating we all walk on glass so as to (gasp) not dare offend anyone! The absolute horror of it! Yes, us measly bigots are just so damn fearful we will no longer have room to operate anymore, ya got us!

OT,

GTA has far, far bigger problems to address in its structure and mission design than this (if this can even be considered a problem, which it isn't). I won't be playing the next GTA, and I can tell you, it won't be because of the main protagonist's gender.....it's because R*'s mission design hasn't evolved much past GTA III.

Who says I'm offended?

If anything, I feel a large degree of pity towards people incapable of taking responsibility for their own feelings in life and projecting that irresponsibility onto the outside world demanding it do it for them instead. What a miserable way to live.

@Pedro: Okay, time to get myself into this subject. No one really isn't complaining about the female lead, the main issue everyone has is the fact Rockstars isn't gonna put more efforts into the SP is what's the problem hence toning down some of the jokes or getting serious on the game itself. Lately, Rockstars only cares about Online and after seeing how they treated GTA Trilogy Remastered, everyone has the right to be very concern on the next GTA game. That's where most of the issue is coming from. Female lead is the least of everyone's worry.

My 2 cents.

Seems like you missed what I have been commenting on throughout the thread. The only time I mentioned female is in the OP. At no point did I say anyone was complaining about the female lead. Feel free to review the thread.

My comments since the original post has been about jokes.

You implied in your response that I stated in some manner that folks were complaining about female leads with "No one really isn't complaining about the female lead,". Which is false. So, I am correcting you on the implication.

I'll be honest. I never heard of Bill Burr until he showed up in Star Wars Mandalorian series and soon after, I went to check out his comedy stuff and wow, he's really good, can't believe I never heard of him. Glad he was in Star Wars.

@goldenelementxl: When Chappelle's special came out my first take was that the most offensive thing about it was the writing and no one was calling him out because the anti-wokes had a transphobia erection and the wokes were triggered.

To me, he definitely did wonder into discriminatory territory that came to surface due to how badly written it was. Burr had a special come out at about the same time, touched similar subjects and you didn't had a fraction of the outrage.

I think arguing that comedians just want to make people laugh is very reductive. I also don't think the issue is in everything being political nowadays, particularly stand-up always had a very big political component. I think people on the extremes are the ones having issues with it now, or the internet became a way for them to express their intolerance. I literally had people complaining about not wanting politics shoved down their throats that love Rocky 4, or that complaint about men not being macho like they used to be and love glam rock.

Maybe there's sense in the position -- I'm not outright denying that -- but, if you look around you, there's compelling evidence to suggest going full-on, hardcore anti-woke might cause premature balding.

Now some people can pull off that look, but I'm not among them; If I lose much more hair I'm going to resemble a potato, so I'll be holding off until nature finishes taking its course. Then I'll boycott GTA6.

Excellent thread, Pedro. Hopefully the irony of discussing the role of comedy in a thread opened with a joke about intolerant gamers is not lost on some.
That people took it upon themselves to be upset about a joke targeting a crowd of people who get mad about female characters in video games is so telling - and hilarious!

@Sagemode87: CNN and MSNBC are what they are today, because of Fox News. Fox pioneered the confirmation bias strategy with the “news.” And they became the highest rated news network because of it. It’s funny that the highest rated news network, with ratings MANY times higher than any other shows, calls the other networks the “mainstream media.” Fox is out there playing games, and many millions of people have fallen for them. And CNN sold out their integrity chasing the ratings Fox News got.

Lol! It’s a wild claim, for sure. Calling CNN manipulative while defending Fox is like a cult calling another group of people a cult. I HATE what all “news” media has done to this country. I don’t know what’s worse, being like China and Russia, having 1 source of propaganda, or having two sides to the bullshit, causing division in the name of ratings and ad revenue… The U.S. found a way to turn deceiving and manipulating people into a business model.

SW related. Did anyone see/hear ex Xbox boss Peter Moore on a sports podcast talking about how they encouraged the console wars as a means of exposure and consumer engagement? Division, tribalism, brand loyalty and confirmation bias are very powerful tools. It’s just depressing that people are so easily manipulated

If fans boycott GTA6 for dumb reasons like having a woman protagonist... Good! GTA is trash. It should be boycotted just for being a trash game.

Cracks me up to still see so many man-children whining about women protagonists in their games. It reminds me of my six year old son, who refuses to watch any TV show or movie starring a woman because “girls are yucky.”

Grow the **** up, y’all.

I am really curious about the mission structure of their next title. Is it gonna be the same outdated garbage that feels like its from the mid 2000's, or have they learned from the criticism they've gotten in rdr2.

And imagine this comes out in 2024, and stays in the top 10 best selling titles until something ridiculous like 2035. I mean, holy shit, please go away gta.

I'm not flummoxed about the protagonists underwear content at all really.

Will it be a return to early 00's sandbox gameplay or tightly scripted 'do it this way or no way at all' approach to missions is a bigger concern.

CNN and MSNBC are far more manipulate than anything you'll see on Fox. If anyone has become a cult, it's the left.

Fox didn't call the whole country burning down 2 years ago "peaceful" . CNN only talks about one group of people when it comes to police shootings creating a BS narrative. Had I listened to them, I'd probably think I'm being hunted down. Fox tells the truth on such material. CNN is still talking about Jan 6th and diversity with the economy the way it is because they have nothing else to go on. Please enlighten me on what Fox lies about. They're not perfect but I'd trust Fox over CNN. As for gaming, I'm hoping they aren't afraid to make jokes in this game. Cancel culture has spread to gaming because we're too afraid to call out things in society.

I’ll provide links, articles, fabricated graphics etc, but a short list of the Fox News fuckery

- Their biggest personalities went on-air and claimed no politician could change the gas prices during the W. Bush era

- They altered charts and graphs detailing the Obama unemployment numbers

- Any time a Fox personality gets in legal trouble and held accountable for their coverage, they play the satire card. A Judge recently ruled in Tucker Carlsons favor in a defamation case because, ”No reasonable person would take Tucker Carlson seriously.”

- Fox has famously been against vaccine mandates on-air, while also mandating the vaccine to their employees…

- Fox has been historically against gay marriage, while having multiple homosexual, married anchors and hosts.

- The Fox Jan 6 coverage speaks for itself…

Fox News is the reason CNN is the way they are today. Fox just tells their base what they want to hear, and they tuned in at record numbers. They’re they number 1 news network because of it. All CNN is doing is trying to be the liberal Fox. But it’s clearly not working

A rebuttal isn't needed because Fox spewing misinformation is a well-known fact.

Why would having the ability to play as a male/female or switch between the two be a big deal? At least they admit they are separate things.. Boycotting is ignorant in my opinion even if I don't stand behind all the decisions of the top brass.
